I took some shots as reflex action of a Grey Heron flying overhead and saw this evening a peculiar growth from under its neck. Any ideas what it could be?
Instant thought:
Hanging out of the left side of its beak, it‘s a birds leg with some ringing

I don't think so. Here is another crop with the exposure increased. You can see that the appendage appears to start from behind the beak, which is fully closed anyway. But, maybe it's an optical illusion.309A7372-DxO_Heron_growth-low_res-scale-2_00x.jpg

Yeah! I agree with you. It's a strange thing. I have no real idea.

The end looks like a feather that's glued together by some blood or mud. Maybe something glued together with its breast feathers :unsure:
