Upgrading to a 7D

I am getting a 7D this week (I know a new one is coming but the price here in France was too good to pass on, 760€ delivered)

My question is, what major improvements will I notice compared to my 40D and 600D. 18mps is 18mps but where will the subtle or big changes be seen.

Thanks in advance.

First of all, congrats to your new camera, it will be great! :D
There won't be a jump in IQ, as the 600D has exactly the same, but in AF (speed, flexibility, configurability...), ruggedness and in the handling. Compared to the Rebel series, I find the 7D's handling to be much more intuitive and better to use; I nearly never use the Q button, because there's such quick access to the settings due to the button layout. And there will be other small things, small, but important, that make the camera as good, professional and lovable as it is, such as AF microadjustment or being able to set ISO in thirds of a stop.
Have fun with your new 7D! :D

Hi Philshoz.
Things you get are a great camera with,
built in wireless flash control, oh you have that,
top display screen for shooting settings, oh you have that,
ISO in 1/3rd stop increments, oh you have that,
dual control wheels instead of cross keys, oh you have that,
3 custom setting positions, oh you have that,
Q menu button, oh you have that, but if you use it now, you probably won't on the 7D!
But seriously what you do get is a single body with all those things you already have included, you get a really nice camera, well laid out controls, much better focusing system including AFMA. A much faster frame rate, a much deeper buffer for holding those fast frames until they are written to CF card.
You loose those silly scene controls and that very useful flip out display!
I know a lot of people find fault with the image, banding in shadows, poor high ISO performance, but these can be corrected easily in post processing, and even if you don't do that the images are really not that bad, family and friends will love them!
I know it may seem I have been a bit ambivalent at the start of the reply, but in all seriousness I love my 7D, especially since I got around to AFMAing my lenses and getting the best out of my Sigma 150-500mm, I still have my 40D as a second body and it still takes nice pictures too.
I'm sure you will enjoy using it and get some great shots.

Cheers Graham.

Thanks for the replies.

I chose the 7D primarily to take better surf shots, 8fps will be very useful. Also to get more control with the AF, so you have confirmed that. The AF servo is something I have to work on. Nailing good surf shots is very difficult but I will persevere.

I do like the look of the controls, especially down the left side rear, more user friendly.

Moving forward I hope the video element will prove rewarding.

I have the 40D up for sale, maybe I should sell the 600D instead ???

Thanks again guys...

I love my 7D. It's fast and I'm more than happy with the image quality even at higher ISO's. No it's not a full frame nor do I expect it to be in terms of FF image quality. The 7 is still a fantastic camera even if it is 5 years old. Even IF they release a 7D2 this summer I won't run out and buy one. My 7 does everything I want a crop body to do and more. If I buy another body I'll go FF and get a 6D. That way I will have the choice of speed and reach or wide angle and fantastic image quality.

I would say keep the 40 as a backup. I have a 40D as a backup. It takes fantastic images and it's still a fast camera.

You won't regret buying the 7D. It's an amazing camera.

I've had two 7D's, and five 40D's. After I sold my 2nd 7D, I bought another 40D. The 7D has more features, high fps, and more MP, but for my use, the 40D was fine. It was a backup to my 5D MK III, and seldom got any use, so it was a waste of money to keep it. The 40D was cheap and fully depreciated.

My APS C camera is now a G1X MK II, its fine for web photos or something to carry around where I do not want to bring the big camera. I finally got the Wi-Fi working properly, so I can transfer images to my computer wirelessly.

I think you will love your 7D, they will hold their value fairly well for the next two or three years.

The spot Autofocus can come in handy when you need to focus on a subject that is partially obscured and tough for normal focus points.

Hi Philshoz.
I guess you know which camera you prefer the images from, or the handling of, if you don't have a preference, then I would suggest that you use each alongside the 7D and see if you prefer the similar controls of the 40D or the flip out display and other differences of the 600D. If you can manage without the 600D it will net you more than the 40D to put towards more gear, and you will probably not use the second camera that much anyway.

Cheers Graham.
