Yes, this this is kind of neat.

Anyone else get the feeling that this thing was designed and marketed to get bought by someone like Canon, Sony or Panasonic? I'm thinking aloud, but I almost feel this thing wasn't built to ever reach market under “Red”.
I could be wrong. :)

Well, I would love to give a try… specially that I’m a LEGO fan :-)
I think the modular idea is great. I definitely didn’t cancel my 5DmkII order, but I bet in a year or so RED will have the FF35 brain price down and it would be more affordable for people interested in “combo cameras”. I could see myself shooting with the RED Scarlet v2 on set and walking around with the Canon 5DmkII around my neck taking establishing shots/documentation.
It will be interesting to see what the Scarlet’s IQ and ISO performance are like. Maybe the Canon 5DmkII will surpass it for the independent film makers. Also you may be right, Canon could buy RED or at least team up to produce some seriously wicked equipment.

Jim Jannard started RED for a reason. It’s a private company, and will be staying that way. Jim runs his ship the way he wants to. Selling to Canon would be the absolute antithesis of everything they stand for there.
You’re probably right. He’s a dude having some fun I guess. Although, he didn’t have a problem merging Oakley with another company for some cold hard billions. :)
Red did not start with these releases; the RedOne was released early this year and is being used in various feature film productions. Furthermore, it is not a public company, and therefore cannot be bought with any ease. The reason that Jim Jannard sold Oakley was to concentrate on developing Red.
