Predictions
I want to hear what you folks think is coming for PMA?

Rumors have been few and far between, will that mean PMA won't bring us too many goodies? I'll keep trying to find out.

My Predictions based on the best rumors I have will be up shortly.

  1. Its amazing at how non owners of the 5D MK II keep telling those of us who own and use one how poorly it focuses in low light. Then they claim the auto focus did not change and ignore the fact that it did.

Its 5:30 pm here, I just turned off the light in my room, only the computer monitor is going. With my 24-105mm f:/4 lens, it autofocuses just fine- In the Dark! It also takes a pretty fair picture, again in the dark. Of course, it was a 5 second exposure hand held, so it was blury, but I set the lens to infinity and it focused to 3.5 ft just fine.

The low light focus is amazing, and it would have been better with a f/2.8 lens.

  2. I’d definitely be interested in a body in this range, around the $1800-$2000 body-only price point. It would give a legitimate upgrade over the xxD range, and still leave the 5Dmk2 for those who need the resolution. I also wouldn’t object to a 1.3 crop in this spot.

I’d also like to see Canon bring an enhanced AF system into the mid-range line. Everybody seems to rave about the Nikon AF system in the D300s and up. That might position a hypothetical 7D for more action, with the 5DmkII for higher-resolution work.

  3. You really must not do much low-light, handheld work (such as music performance.) IS is invaluable for this. I’ve gotten great results as slow as 1/20th with the 70-200/2.8L IS; I use the 17-55/2.8 IS on my 40D’s down to 1/15th of a second all the time. Yes, if your subject is moving, the photo will be blurred – but almost every subject hits a spot where their motion is stopped or greatly reduced. What NEVER is reduced is camera shake caused by the photographer, and that’s where IS saves the day. The 24-70/2.8L with IS would be an immediate purchase for me. So would a 135/2L IS, which would make that lens useful in low light conditions without a monopod.
