  1. I’ll throw this out there: wasn’t there discussion a year or so back from Canon about the 1D series eventually being unified , i.e., no separate D and Ds model? Could this be the first sign of that camera? I agree that this does sound a bit over the top (4 card slots?!), but most of it would be outstanding if true.

  2. PLEASE! Touchscreen User Interface would be horrible for most real working pros. If you are looking at the screen, you’re not shooting or not even ready to shoot. Well placed and thought out dedicated mechanical controls are essential. Optional touchscreen might be ok. But I would much rather have a dedicated mirror lockup button.
Please, Canon, we need better working tools and fewer flashy specs. Save the gadget wars for some other market.

How about something useful like voice recognition to IPTC metadata: caption & keywords. Integrated GPS would take care of location, and also keep the clock properly set – even as time zones are changed.

  3. What could we get with 2 DIGIC4 processors? Somewhere between 160 and 200 MP/sec?

At 10 fps that means a 16 to 20 MP sensor.
On a full frame camera that would be 7.3 to 6.5 micron pixels, i.e., slightly larger than the pixel size on the 1Dm3 / 1Dsm2. But, both full frame and 10 fps.

At 5 fps that means a 32 to 40 MP sensor.
On a full frame camera that would be 5.3 to 4.7 microns pixels, i.e., slightly larger than the pixel size on the 50D. Same quality per pixel as the 50D but 2.5 times as many pixels.

This is what I would expect Canon to release soon – one high speed camera with large, low noise, high ISO pixels and a second camera with tons of decent quality pixels for those that want detail.

Canon could decide to use 4 DIGIC4 processors or introduce a faster DIGIC5 processor. If they did, I would expect them still keep the two sensors outlined above, but change the 1D speed to 20 fps (via live mode?) and the 1Ds speed to 10 fps.

  4. I highly doubt it will be the 21 mp sensor, this camera was built for speed, not only in shutter but ISO… with that kind of pixel density you won’t get AS good of an ISO. I say “as” because the 5D mark II seems to be doing pretty good. But I am guessing they will use 5DMKII tech in a lower sensor like say a FF 12-17 megapixel sensor to up the ante against nikon with a dual digic IV chip. And astounding ISO quality. My major guess would be 17 megapixels that would satisfy KJs earlier statement that two digic IV processors wouldn’t be able to handle 21 megapixels and at 17 megapixels it would equal 160mbs per second just filling the dual digic IV quota. Of course this sensor would be better than the 17 megapixel sensor of the 1Ds mark II.
