More Info
I've recevied some more info about a possible replacement of the 50D/5D Mark II.

The source says  a new xD camera is imminent.

The DSLR lineup from Canon will be as follows.
1000D / XS
500D / T1i
550D / T2i
7D
5D Mark II
3D (?)
1D Mark IV
1Ds Mark III

There could be some truth to this, if the price of the 7D is cut like the 5D Mark II's has been.

  1. Nothing in life is free, and 3D imaging certainly confirms this rule.

With a TS-E lens you could shift the optical axis, but only by a few millimeters. As a stereo base, that is extremely small and probably useless, but you do get two images that correspond to slightly different viewpoints. The key point here is that the lens shifts.

The trick with the IS or an “upgraded” equivalent thereof will probably not work, since it will not shift the optical axis at the level of the front element.

But as several people here have pointed out, for ergonomic reasons and to just physically fit two beam paths next to each other some solution other than just posing two lenses next to each other is needed.

For teles, I can imagine a common front element and split elements further down the lens, projecting two separate images on either one large or two small sensors. For wide angles, however, I cannot see how this could work.

In any case, new lens designs are needed – except for shifting lens and camera on a tripod.
