Another person claiming it exists
I received another email from someone claiming Canon will in fact launch a waterproof/shockproof camera for PMA.

Specs
10.1mp
2.5″ LCD
3.5x Zoom (35-122)
Waterproof to 8 meters
Drop resistant to 6 feet

CR's take
This camera concept seems like a no brainer for Canon. Olympus has proven there is a market, time to steal some back. Still take this with a grain of salt, I've received nothing solid from regularly good sources.

  1. hmm…. i think the canon dive case that I have for my sd850IS works just fine…granted if they could give me the sample flexibility in a smaller package that would be cool…. one difference though is the depth rating.. the dive case is well over 100ft…this camera is 8m…a bit over 25ft? I dive deeper than that when I snorkle sometimes… a bit disappointing but I guess it will not cut into their sales of dive cases that way :P

  2. Im a fan of canon products, but if these specs are right, i will buy the FT1 from Panasonic with 28mm wideangle and HD Video …

  3. I’ve been waiting for a waterproof/shockproof camera with good picture quality for a long time to carry around when my DSLR can’t come with. So I’m excited about this rumor.

Panasonic announced the DMC-TS1 on the 27th of January that will be a direct competitor with this Canon camera. Unfortunately, it looks like, as usual, Canon has left out a couple very desirable features. The two that come to mind are a wide angle lens (DMC-TS1 = 28mm) and HD movie mode (DMC-TS1 = 720p). According to the above specs the Canon can go deeper and be dropped from a little higher, but the wide angle and movie modes are more important to my needs.
