New highend kit zoom coming?
I'm told we could see a replacement of the EF-S 17-85 IS lens as soon as February. The new lens would be slightly longer at the telephoto end and build quality reduced to lower the price. It will run concurrent with the 17-85 until stock is gone, possibly Christmas 2009.

The source says EF-S 17-90 f/4-5.6 IS.

  1. great, an even cheaper version of the 17-85mm IS. Isn’t that what the kit lens is for? They need to improve the 17-85 IQ and not cheapen it…. well, what they really need to do it put out the 24-70/2.8 IS (or maybe even 20-70?) with improved IQ… oh well, I guess I’ll keep dreaming and using alternative glass :P

  2. They’d better improve it. It is one of the most overpriced lenses in Canon range… The key would be improving IQ mantaining price… Let’s see!!

  3. This is extremely unlikely. I understand the concept of lowering costs, but recreating a lens for the sole purpose to do so is stupid.

If anything the 17-85(which isn’t exactly that old) would see a version 2 update with their new IS system and an improved optical design. The dame way the 18-55 did. (minus the IS part)

  4. Ya, Canon needs this. The 18-55 IS kit lens is good but lacks USM. Hopefully, this rumored replacement has USM and also the same optical quality as the 18-55 IS kit lens.
