Canon Will Announce a Zoom Lens Faster Than F/2.0 in Late 2026

Lots of desire for powershot g1 / eos m6 style body with 22mm equivalent.

Rf mount is just too big imo. I'd love to see an m6 /G1 aps-c replacement with 22mm fixed to it, ideally with a leaf shutter and built in flash. It would beat the fuji x100 imo.

These days canons ovf sim evfs are potentially as good or better vs a little slr viewfinder, although not as good as an old fashioned add on optical viewfinder imo...

A Little Bit of Info on the Canon RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

Let me see if I got this right in comparison to the 24-105mm F4:
- same size
- similar weight
- same max aperture
- both lenses have IS
- 2,5 zoom instead of 4,3 zoom
- similar price tag

Wow, from a stills photographer standpoint this lens isn’t interesting at all!

But then again, it does start at 20mm 😂

Seriously, I am definitely out on this one

Show your Bird Portraits

It's always exciting for us to see the first Cuckoo of the year - they are very elusive and they are easily heard but not seen. Ours was yesterday. I am posting the not at all exciting images of a very far away bird to show that the R7 + RF 100-400mm used by wife (the first shot) gives results hardly distinguishable from that of my much more expensive and heavier R5ii + RF 100-500mm (both very heavily cropped and not reduced in size). At that distance and image size, you are looking at pixel-peeping resolution.

A Little Bit of Info on the Canon RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

Since it has internal zoom, then I would guess the size would be close to 24-105 f4 collapsed, but I’m hoping it is closer to size and weight of the 14-35mm - that seems way more likely and would sell a lot better if so. So hoping for no more than 600 grams. If it’s closer to 750-800, it becomes less desirable.

Also guessing $1299-1499, but hope they have an R6V kit that knocks off $200-300.

A Little Bit of Info on the Canon RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

At first, I was thinking that this is something of a duplicate of the 14-35, but a bit longer. And it kind of is - but, I think in conjunction with a video-oriented camera, this (providing its' not too heavy) would be a nice walkabout lens for photo/videographing street scenes and indoor event situations where you are more inclined to grab quick table shots or people where you want to include the environment. But going to 50 gives you some portraiture capability as well.

I know, it seems that the trend is to go wide to get that "big nose phone camera" look that so many produce, but that just makes people look weird and distorted to me, and should be used sparingly.

A Little Bit of Info on the Canon RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

My bet if it has a red ring: Same outer shell dimensions like the VCM series incl. 67mm filter thread!
If they use high optical correction and a very effective internal "lens hood" design this lens might replace my EF 16-35 f/4 and RF 24-105 which are good lenses but I never loved them.
PZ would be a great addition (1) generally and (2) on a gimbal.
I more and more like the idea to use this one on my R50 V where it has a close to ideal range (for me!) from 32 to 80mm!
I hope Canon will not sacrifice quality for size or weight.
I don't mind a lens being big or a bit on the heavy side, or being software corrected.
As long as the corners are sharp, since I'm mostly taking pictures of landscapes, cities or macros.

EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R6 Mark III Firmware Coming in May?

I suppose those are possible, but I don’t think they’re at all likely. Call Canon directly.

How often do you manually adjust ISO in a hurry? Personally, I almost never do so outside of situations where I have ample time, Auto ISO is my usual setting in both Fv and M (those are the only modes I use). On my R1, I have ISO assigned to the lens control ring and EC assigned to the Quick Control Dial (on the back around the Set button), so when I need EC it’s easy to dial in with my thumb, without taking my eye from the viewfinder.

If I need to set ISO manually, which I do when setting up flash shooting, or on a tripod, I have time to adjust it using the lens control ring or the rear LCD.
Fwiw I always control ISO manually, changing it regularly as I go along.

What are the lenses you wish cabin would make?

A fast 28mm is all that’s left on my wishlist, f/2 or wider, it doesn’t even need a red ring.

I’m currently considering repurchasing the Sigma 28mm f/1.4 Art, it’s been almost two years since I got rid of mine, and there’s no alternative in sight. I no longer have any EF lens, but I still have the adapter, so I’m considering making an exception for this one, and keeping it as long as necessary.

I could also enjoy having a 20mm f/2.8 or f/2, at least something mid-range to graduate from the RF 16mm f/2.8, but that is not as important to me.

The system has options for everything else I could need.
i sold my second sigma 28 f1.4 Art after getting the 24 f1.4 VCM.

I can't see this being less than the 14-35, particularly if the size suggests less reliance on software corrections.

I do hold out hope on the zoom action - the 'Ordinary Filmmaker' video certainly seemed to be saying that it wasn't just a rocker-in-the-shape-of-a-ring but was in fact a zoom ring with custom menu settings to control sensitivity etc.

If this is as large as the 24-105/4L then I'm probably less excited than I was originally, as that's a bit chunky to be an ideal walk around lens - I was hoping for something closer to the 14-35. Not too long to wait for confirmation, hopefully.
i can see this lens being less useful than the 14-35. what an odd focal range for an f4 zoom
