EOS R5 production rate

Anyone defending this rollout is insane. I mean if you're this behind, you don't start shipping it. Like there's literally no reason to have rolled it out this soon. It's almost like it never released in the first place. Can't wait to not buy another body for a long long time.
I've been tested.

Not insane.

Actually, I would not even say that I am "defending it" just that it is very understandable and really a perfect storm:
  1. COVID interrupts production
  2. Canon is rolling out 3 high end bodies (1DX III, R5, and R6) all in the same year. Plus new cinema bodies, etc.
  3. Canon is rolling out new technologies (IBIS, etc) in multiple bodies all at once
  4. Canon had to estimate demand for their new products in a declining market with some economists forecasting a recession.
  5. Canon underestimated pent up demand for these new technologies or higher end mirrorless (seen lots of Sony/Fuji users come back to Canon in addition to those upgrading from Canon). I suspect this may be worse that people realize as I know people that have received their R5s/R6s. So Canon really did ship bodies at the end of July/August.
  6. As I recall (can't find the thread so maybe a different forum), we actually discussed/polled what we would prefer given the limited quantities, most preferred releasing what they had when they had even if that meant some demand would go unfulfilled for awhile. Well, here we are.
  7. It really is not that odd for a popular item to go out of stock for a period immediately after release. Its happened with Canon before.

Future Canon Camera Viewfinders: Rangefinder or Centered (DSLR) style?

Clearly, a DSLR viewfinder pretty much MUST be centered over the mount--that's where the prism has to go. But a lot of people are expressing a desire to have the viewfinder that is off-center with respect to the BODY, for reasons of nose hitting the screen, etc.

I can certainly imagine even a DSLR with an offset mount, and a "correctly" placed viewfinder that is not centered on the body. But of course we aren't talking about actual DSLRs. With an EVF, of course, it could go anywhere except right where the sensor goes (it could be behind the sensor!) or in front of the sensor.

Since I am left eye dominant, to work the controls I have to deal with the interference of my nose a lot more; I have to lift the camera away from my face to do anything (and it never occurred to me now that that wasn't normal). Moving the viewfinder left would relieve that but possibly put me in "nose touching the screen" territory. At least I am (mostly) right handed so the controls themselves aren't awkward once I pull the camera away!

Canon announces the IVY CLIQ+2 & CLIQ 2 instant camera printer

The Canon press release says Snap-happys also have the option to print from an SD card and the now available Live View allows users to check the image before clicking for the cliq+2+. I took that as phone-as-EVF, but it could also be 'check-before-print'
That would be an upgrade from the gen2 units. It is only available on the cliq2+ types, the cliq2's don't have it. They also added a "vivid" print mode. I

How many camera makes do you use?

Canon and Olympus. I wish that Canon had something similar to the Olympus TG-6.
The TG5 is one of my total. Great for snorkelling, holiday snaps in any conditions, and you could probably use it for hammering in a tent peg. Olympus does what it does very well In general. A real pity it has nearly gone under.

Further talk about the fate of the EOS M system

I think there should be a "small" R like Sigma Fp or the new Sony A7C, or maybe 2 versions :
- a more affordable APS-C
- a FF

With smartphones photography improving at every new generation the gap between phones and small affordable camera is narrowing.

Why would Canon develop such a camera if the expected selling numbers are small?

I would for sure buy a small R as a second body.

R5 Tilta like DIY Cooling System

If I were looking for a aftermarket device, I'd consider a machined aluminum replacement base plate complete with weather sealing. It might even have fins or a attachment where you could apply active cooling. Getting heat out of the chassis seems to be the major issue but not the only one. There are already online kick starter projects but more people will throw money at anyone with a bunch of charts and a slick speaker. They always deliver what they promise - right?

Scored a Great EOS RP Deal - $898 Out the Door Pricing

Just wanted to share this. I scored an EOS RP, Brand New (Not Refurb), off Canon USA's site for $898 USD out the door.

I was able to stack two coupon codes which were:

L1N5YWT - 10%

XJ49WS7 - 10%

Check out the screenshot of my purchase if you don't believe.

Figured I'd share! Almost a steal at this price.

Here is the Canon Cinema EOS C70

With C300 Mark III DGO sensor, C70 will be an amazing camera for gimbal use, crash cam and as a b-cam in combo with its bigger brothers (c300/c500). As Komodo in 1st place was manufactured as a crash cam in mind while Hollywood was forced to use GoPros in situations with explosions, action movies, chasing cars etc. If c70 has similar dimensions as Komodo then it could fit in high end productions. For me IBIS on this camera is not a necessary thing. One thing that I feel that Canon need to provide is a better raw codec option with higher bitrate and different compressions to choose. RED Raw has the advantage there and Braw is following very closely. Canon needs to catch up there. If you have seen CineD dynamic range of the R5 for example you can see that there are 2 additional stops buried in the shadows while shooting 8k raw. With a much more efficient raw codec with different compression methods and 16-bit raw, there is an opportunity to bring these stops back with not so much noise and banding. DGO sensor has proven already its strength and capabilities ( a technology that is already present in Arri cameras for a long time). SDI from the other hand is imo a huge missing from c70.

Eye detect doesn't work in Servo mode on my R5

But then the manual would be 2700 pages...

I'm seeing some pretty good YouTube videos showing setups and menu walk-throughs. How long before the "expanded" manuals are available on Amazon?
Roberto Valenzaula has been posting some fairly thorough walk thrus of the entire menu system, one section at a time. He has a lot of explanation why he has chosen each setting. I don't always agree with his choices, but that's why we have choices.

Canon unveils the PowerShot Zoom

Off topic warning: Without getting too technical, if you study sports philosophy its evident why soccer is the most popular sports in the world: because its is played all over the filed and what any given player does on either side affects the entirety of the gameplay. So all spectators can throughout the game follow and identify themselves directly with the role and actions of any of the players they choose or like - because they are all "active" in the game even when far from the ball. No other sports matches this. Basket ball for instance has players rushing from one end to the other, many other sports are played individually and again on each side of a divide etc. When Ice Hockey was dying they studied soccer and copied its most important rule; offside, that helps spread the game across the field. Ice Hocky gained hugely in popularity afterwards - so this is not just a theory. VAR btw is thus a disaster as it removes the intimacy of the game from the spectators who can love or hate the referee but have no relationship with the VAR. I believe it will be very hurtful for the game's popularity in the long term.

Yeah, but soccer doesn't have the same thrill of very real potential bodily injury.
I mean, part of the reason they watch NASCAR is for the wrecks....same for football I guess.
;)

But seriously, to each his own....it was just an observation based on this ad having SO much screen time for soccer vs any other activity showing the cameras potential usage scenarios.

EF 50mm f/1.4L IS USM

And yeah I use the Tamron 45 on my EOS RP. It produces quite pleasing images. Though the Fujifilm X 35mm 1.4 R (50mm 1.8 equivalent) is still noticeably sharper, which is shocking since it's a double-gauss design... just a very well designed double gauss.
Just FYI: There's no reason to cry doom yet. When we did see a patent for an RF 50 mm 1.8 last year, it was a Double Gauss derivative and absolutely tiny at just 3.8 cm:

I bet there's a ton of glass in various stages of design and manufacturing currently. When Canon eventually introduces a FF body below the RP price point, corresponding lenses will follow. We've seen enough patents (and with the 24-105mm 4.0-7.1 and f/11 primes, also products) to see that Canon does not shy away from compromises in aperture or optical quality to push down the price, size and weight of FF imaging.

Skylum aims to reinvent traditional photo editing, announces LuminarAI

Get a shark fin style mouse. It helps tremendously with wrist fatigue. Doesn't take long for it to feel normal either.
Arer you selling them? Are you a doctor?

Don't you think I have tried a dozen different types of ergonomic mice and due to my combination of conditions, they do not work.

BTW, carpal tunnel is not wrist fatigue. I have the issue in both my hands and my forearm from pinching in my shoulders. I also have severe neuropathy in my hands.

Its better to not tell someone what will cure your situation when they know zilch about your issues or how many expert doctors they have seen and how many tests they have endured.

Lensrentals.com investigates the heat emission from the Canon EOS R5

Why not just have water trickling down the back of the camera?
Water transfers heat very quickly
Or you could just accept the camera for what it is : worlds best stills camera which can also shoot short clips of high resolution video
I'm not disputing this. Stop being so personally offended by pointing out shortcomings and potential solutions.

I'm just saying this could be corrected in future versions of this camera, say a mark II version. I'm simply discussing ways that could bleed off heat without compromising sealing. Just making more of the camera metal wouldn't necessarily work as more metal in the body shell would have to account for more contraction/expansion which makes sealing more difficult. However a smaller spot dedicated for heat might offer a easier place to channel that heat to, and could allow for third party cooling passive or active solutions, or other external solutions as I proposed a they would not entail having a fan within the camera itself.
