Canon Further Strengthens Its UHDxs Broadcast Lens Lineup with New CJ20ex5B 4K UHD Portable Zoom Lens

Why would they show the Sony logo on the camera? Plus, I agree the footage wasn't all that impressive. But the lens certainly is.
They always use Sony cameras with broadcast lens advertisements. Its just honesty to show it rather than hide it. Virtually all the big broadcasters use Sony cameras but Canon or Fujinon lenses. Canon makes sure the lenses work with Sony.

Japanese competitors often work together and buy items and components from each other.

Here is the Canon Cinema EOS C70, to be announced this week.

What tight spaces are you referring to? Rabbit burrows? I have never had an issue getting a gimbal into spaces.

IS is still nowhere near what a gimbal does. Like I said, it is intended to replace a tripod, not a gimbal. You can use it for walking and such, but it is still inferior to a gimbal, professional or otherwise.
LOL, seriously, you've never had to use a camera in a space too tight for a gimble?
I rest my case.

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM announcement draws closer

Hefty Fifty is an understatement.

That sucker is so heavy it bends light OUTSIDE the shell, without the use of refraction.

If you know what I mean :D

For a 50 I guess it's kinda big... but it's about the same weight as the 24-70 f2.8... so not terrible. It's the 28-70 f2 that starts warping space/time.

Save pictures straight to SSD harddrive, which camera supports it?

Well this is interesting timing.

Saw on B&H this SSD:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1507930-REG/delkin_devices_djugbm1tb_1tb_usb_3_1_gen.html

It is a drive that you plug into the usb-c port.

Seems to be for direct recording to Blackmagic cameras. Wonder if they can adapt it to an R5?

Actually, thanks for the reminder... I have an otg adapter and was going to try to write out to USB on the R5. I'll report back if the camera sees the OTG as a drive it can use, which will the the answer if it would work for this. (I checked in the manual and it say usb is for charging and displaying only... but doesn't hurt to try).

Update - It does nothing...

Ditching the 24-70 mm from holy trinity

I think we are stuck, until some Japanese company canon/NIKON/maybe even Panasonic or even Fuji comes up with a small Japanese Swiss Army knife equivalent for 24-70, we are stuck.
{By Swiss Army knife I mean some kind of Japanese engineering magic!}.

Seems to me if we want the light gathering capability of full frame we are stuck with a bigger kit. And I know what it is to have smaller because when I had my Fuji XT-3 the 18-55 was on my camera 85% of the time.

But of course that is a smaller sensor to allow for those smaller lenses. I wouldn’t consider the RF 24- 70 a walk around lens but for an upcoming trip I’m going to use it as such. I am sure after a while it’s going to get on my nerves – – the size and weight. But it’s only lens I’ll take so I’m going to have to get used to it.

I don't consider the rf 24-70 to be too big as a walk around lens as it isn't even a half of a pound more than the 24-105 which is a good weight to image quality imo.

Here's something to chew on for a few of the rf zooms (also neat tidbit for reference is a can of diet soda is about 0.82 lbs)...
24-105 f4 = 1.54 lbs
24-70 f2.8 = 1.98 lbs
70-200 f2.8 = 2.64 lbs w/ mount
28-70 f2 = 3.15 lbs
100-500 f4.5-7.1 = 3.35 lbs w/ mount

For walkaround even the 70-200 is just doable for me and the 28-70 is not. Oddly enough the shape of the 100-500 is better than the 28-70 for me... go figure.

Canon RF 100-500mm L review for wildlife.

100-500mm - too short. Just put my old Kenko 3xTC on the 100-400mm II and R5. The 3xTC is not supposed to allow AF, and it won't on a DSLR, but the R5 focusses fast at 1200mm and f/17. Here is quick shot of a geranium (cropped) at 1/160s. More seriously, the 100-400mm II is working so well, bare and with TCs, I am not going for the 100-500mm. I am also resisting buying a used 400mm DO II at the price I got for my old one. I'll wait until the next lenses come out.

EOS R6 has arrived!

I know most of the back order woes out there are for the R5, but I placed an order for an R6 three weeks ago here in Canada and was told it's on indefinite back order, with no expected date.

Just got a phone call from the store who told me it just arrived and is ready for collection. They said they only received one and I'm next on the list. I guess their central warehouse received a batch and sent them to different stores.

Looking forward to getting my new toy!

My first commercial photo shoot experience using the R5

I actually just found your channel the other day by chance.

You've some real helpful stuff on there!
I'd be interested to hear more about why you positioned the lights and encouraged the athletes to do certain actions/poses!

You might have a video or two about it already but I haven't watched enough yet.

Well wear with the new cam
Hey Mike, thanks! Yeah check out my BTS at a College Football Shoot video. I get more into the lighting on that one.

Venus Optics announces the Laowa 14mm f/4 FF RL Zero-D lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras

This is a tempting adjunct for weight-limited travel, perhaps with a 24-70 or 70-200, or even with 100-500.

The 11-24 is 5x the weight, so this has quite a different mission and could exist alongside. I've been asking for a 14mm prime, and don't care about speed. I'd pay double for an AF RF, but this might do.

Industry News: Nikon officially announces the 14-24mm F2.8 S and 50mm F1.2 S for Z-mount

I definitely see what you're saying - and I agree with some of the points you make.

There are currently some different gaps between the Nikon S mount lenses and Canon RF mounts.. but this gap will close.

Canon's RF 24-105mm f/4 is very well regarded. I expect Canon will make a RF 24-70mm f/4 as a cheaper / smaller option (to both the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 and RF 24-105mm f/4).

I also expect Canon to come out with a RF 50mm (maybe f/2) - somewhat like the RF 85mm f/2.

The Canon RF 100-500mm is going to be more useful for those wanting more of a 'walk-around' telezoom, the 200mm on the Nikon wide end is much more limiting. (I speak from experience having used a ~200mm as a minimum, isn't helpful in all situations. For safari photos of long-distance wildlife though, it'll be absolutely great).

After a few more years, there will be far fewer gaps in either the lineup, and more lenses will be 'like for like' comparable. Both are doing great jobs.. Nikon started off with more consumer / everyday lenses, Canon with more Pro / extreme lenses.

Competition is good. I hope prices will 'mild down' somewhat on the Canon RF lenses too.

In the meantime though, the EF-RF adapter works VERY well using EF/EF-S lenses, especially on the R6 and R5 bodies.. (again speaking from experience).

PJ

Yes, that's why I like the Canon initial approach more than the Nikon. Canon uses the new mount to create very unique and professional lenses, while you have the adapter to use the very capable EF lenses almost as natives.

Looking at the R5 from a 5Ds user POV

I enjoyed reading the article and watching the video both. As to control of the rear viewfinder, you can, of course set it to only display the EVF and not auto switch to the rear LCD. You can also program a button that makes the switch when you want. But, it does not display settings on the Rear LCS for example, when pressing the Q button and it should. That seems like a firmware change, but maybe its in the hardware too. In any event, I would also like to lock it to viewfinder mode and turn the rear screen on using the Q button to see only the settings.
Thanks - it was because I wasn't sure about those settings that I left it to the end ;-) I had broadly similar issues with the RP.

Canon releases firmware v1.1.1 for both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6

That is also my concern....finally saved enough money ....and I’m committed to upgrade from 6D...but no R6 availability.
What is the better strategy? Order and wait, or wait until better availability and hopefully a deal on Black Friday?
I remember people waiting for a deal on the 5D MK II due to initial availability. It was February before it was available at full price and they could have pre-ordered and had it before Christmas.

Pre Order now and hope its here by Black Friday. If you order from Adorama or B&H you have 30 days to return it, so if the price drops, they will likely match it.

I ordered my R5 when B&H had their 10% off coupon so I'm waiting got it around November or December.

RF 100-500mm vs EF 100-400mm II + EF-ER adapter

My 100-500 is on the UPS truck for delivery today and hope to have some results in the next few days. My only comment is that EF lenses are reaching end of life as Canon will apparently focus on the RF cameras and bodies. This means that older technology will depreciate faster as more people move to the new R style products.

If you sign up for a credit card from B&H or Adorama, you can get discounts on purchases. The $2700 100-500 saves me about $220 on sales tax from B&H or 5% off from Adorama. While spending close to $3K on a lens, saving $200 is not a big deal but $200 will buy you a 128Gb CFx card.

The Canon Cinema EOS C70 is in the wild [CR2]

Yeah this is higher than any A7 model as far as filmmaking goes.
This is a cine EOS ... it's purpose-built for video. The A7 is not, as they're primarily still cameras, with video tacked-on. I consider the lack of IBIS to be a feature, not a bug, on a camera such as this. Just get a proper tripod, a nice dolly, a good stabilizer (Glidecam, Steadicam, Flycam, etc.). Those are all serious stabilizers, not that consumer-grade IBIS junk.

Buffer, Speed, and Cache......2 Cards R5

All,

So much information is available but I am asking for some "real world" experiences using both card slots in the R5 for still images. I am accustomed to using the second slot in my 5Div for jpeg backups....just in case my RAW images to the CF get lost or corrupted. Now, with the R5, there's CFexpress + UHS-II SDXC slots. I know the read/write and buffer of the CFexpress is significantly higher than the SD speed. If I set the write to RAW on the CFexpress with the SD set to JPEG or HEIF "L" backups, what happens to the camera during use? I almost never need 20 frames per second nor even rarely use more than 8. Will the buffer take noticeably longer to clear? Does the frame rate slow dramatically?

There are numbers posted with speeds and frames but I'd like a subjective response from those of you with the camera in their hands using both cards simultaneously. How does the experience "feel" to you?

Thanks for your answers.

EOS R5 review

I believe, that the quickest way to change the shutter modes should be selecting the appropriate shutter modes in the camera menu.

Nikon got it somehow in Z50/5/6/7 camera models.

Nikon has updated the FW to give us an auto option - just set the shutter type to AUTO. The camera will automatically switch between mechanical shutter and EFCS to avoid shutter shock. Besides that, just remember to turn IBIS off if using a tripod.

Source: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63282628

How it's working?

Currently, the AUTO option uses mechanical shutter at 1/320 and above speeds, EFCS below 1/320. Some have seen small amount of shutter shock above 1/320, but overall, it seems this cross over point works well in general. No issues on mine.

Source: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63284768

Is this the perfect solution?

EFCS has many disadvantages, banding with flashes or indoor lighting, you cannot shoot sports, etc. - some say even raw files are affected. In my opinion EFCS is not an option for a pro full frame camera, especially when the Sony a7iii does not have this problem.

Source: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63287989

Users of certain Fujifilm camera models were pampered to the maximum by the manufacturer, the best example of currently produced models is the X-Pro3 camera model:

http://fujifilm-dsc.com/en/manual/x-pro3/menu_shooting/shooting_setting/index.html#shutter_type

So this problem definitely can be solved (or otherwise, largely limited) with a software solution.

Sony officially announces the Alpha a7c, the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame camera.

This compact camera further fuels my hunger for pancake lenses. Canon, please serve them like Prince did for Charlay Murphay after that one basketball game.

Didn't sony fans want an APS-C sensor in an A7 large view finder body? If so, I sincerely feel bad for them as this is opposite.
