Canon EOS Roadmap

With respect, it was rather ironic to call out a 1D X III and an EOS Rx with predictions, then refer to the EOS M line as a niche product because it’s something you don’t care about. Hopefully you realize that the M series generates far more revenue for Canon than the 1-series/Rx ever will.

It’s another example of the extreme disconnect between this forum and the broader ILC market.
Yes, you are correct. Although in my defense, it was late and frankly, I think of all full frame cameras as niche markets as well. In fact, we seem to be at the point that any camera that does not make phone calls is a niche product.

Canon nFD 50mm f/1.4 on the M5

Very nice, LSX. Vintage MF lenses can be a lot of fun sometimes. :) I have a blast with my old Takumars, Mamiyas, etc. Especially in BW. I have vintage lenses in M42 screw mount only, including Jupiter and Industar made in the old USSR. From 28mm - 400mm, it is all fun. I do have one Canon FD 50mm f/1.8, but have never adapted it. It is mounted on an old A-1 that has the motor winder on it. I have new light seals for that camera, but have not yet got around to replacing them.

Anyway, nice photos... as always.

6D weatherproofness, tested.

For all electronics, I don't use rice OR silica gel - they will only pull moisture out of the surrounding air hoses until about 10-15% humidity remains. I prefer to use 1.5-3.0A molecular sieve with the item in a tight mylar pouch and heated to about 105F (or the max the item will take safely). It will pull down to almost 2%. Used mostly by chemists to desiccate fluids (pulling water out of petroleum in a column), but decently cheap. This is the place to by it from: http://www.sorbentsystems.com/ . I use their siilca gel boxes in my camera cases, but for any electronics I'm repairing that has been water exposed, sieve is the way to go.

Even on my 1Ds3, the "sealing" is nothing more than foam rubber strips and mylar adhesive tape at the joints. I had the camera sent to Canon CPS ages ago and they did a shutter replacement. However, when I pulled the camera apart recently, the "seal" tape was torn at the seams between the cover and body, but never replaced when they serviced it. So, I laid the ripped pieces onto a sheet of 3M 200MP, traced it out and replaced all the pieces around the camera. Then, cut new (denser) foam rubber strips and filled in all the gaps. Now, it's much more water-resistant than before.

Moral of the story is that even if it's been back to CPS, don't trust that they'll fully make it water-resistant if not necessary! I've hosed mine down with a garden hose with a 70-200/2.8L II on with no problems (and of course, a nice tight Heliopan filter on the front, even though not needed). Just remember that seals DO shrink and DO get old/brittle/crumbly over time. It is a combination of the film tape, foam rubber strips, AND rubber grips (on the outside) that make the combo more water"proof". The rubber pieces tuck down into grooves and some of the joints are between pieces. With enough water and/or pressure, water will still penetrate the joint.

NOTE ABOUT THE HOTSHOE: at least on the 1Ds3 - the area where the shoe is mounted is screwed down tight and "sealed" with some caulk/glue. As is the area around the lens mount. The DoF preview button is also sealed with this glue. There is no need to add any additional sealing on the 1 series. However, I have a small rubber hotshoe level that slides in - it keeps the top from getting scratched, gives me a simple level, and keeps water out of the left/right rail should it get dampened.

After seeing this, I wouldn't trust any of the lower cameras to any water - anybody who has a "survived it" story was just lucky and their body was probably pretty new.

In case somebody wants to see what the "sealing" looks like: go here. The light grey tape pieces are the Canon original seal (the tears are directly along the case seams!) and the dark tape is the 200MP that I was tracing/creating with.
Waterproof appraisals are dictated by the dress maker or texture maker, with testing done.

Patent: Expanded dynamic range using DPAF sensors

In your message https://www.canonrumors.com/forum/i...e-using-dpaf-sensors.37447/page-2#post-787800 you never said it was about a whole row. You were talking about one pixel. In one row that's unlikely of course. But in two half-pixels or in several adjacent half-pixels - easily.

Yes, true. I just didn't know how to explain at that time... sometimes, taking an experiment considering just one pixel does not make sense when expanded to the whole sensor.

That said. It seems that many people are not reading the article correctly. It is about amplification during read.

The amplification of one half of the pixel could also mean de-amplification of the other half, so that the pixel as a whole would be at the "correct" exposure". Blown out pixels would still be blown out on the amplified pixel but would have information on the de-amplified half-pixel. And vice-versa for pixels that are too dark for any information. That would give expanded ISO.

Patent: Canon appears to be continuing development of EF mount optical formulas

Do you think there will be a 5Dmk5 or 5DSR mk II ?
Because I would be happy to have new EF lenses but if their is no new DSLR coming, why would they produce new lenses ?

I know we are a lot with EF lenses and a lot of us will not switch to Mirrorless soon. But will Canon listen to us ?
New DSLR's will come, but sales of enthusiast models is dropping. This is sending a message to both Canon and Nikon that buyers are holding off to see what a enthusiast model of a mirrorless will be like. Pressure is on Canon to get those models out, they need the sales.

Canon has virtually all of their lens design teams working on lenses for mirrorless. The patents we see are the result of work being done 3 years ago and submitted for a patent 18 months ago. They are basically a snapshot of the past and not today's thinking.

However, new EF lenses will be produced. There are a huge number of EF bodies in use and many will want new lenses for them. The problem right now for Canon is to get as many RF lenses as possible to the market. They sell for higher prices and there is strong demand.

Letter to Canon

Stephen Elliott
Robin Whalley

And more if you search for 'landscape photographer micro four thirds'

Then portraiture, wildlife :
Damien McGillicuddy
Andy Rouse (a recent convert) - he was happy using Canon EOS-R but felt the frame rate was limiting for some action shots
Joe Edelman
Daniel Cox

Many thanks for these, I'll check them out (y)

Time Travel: 2019 IndyCar at Road America shot on a Canon SUPER 8 from 1968

I used to use my dad's Bell & Howell Super 8 camera back in the 1970's. It used to look like a pistol. Then we would get those 3" reels back from the lab and put them through the projector. I remember the sound of the projector as the film would pass through it. Those were nice times...Art doesn't have to be the latest technology. Thanks for sharing.

LOOKING FOR FLASH DOME - HARD TO FIND

I never say trust me.. I never do.. but:

trust me, this is the most reasonable option for a run and gun situation as it is super light, allows you to shape your light as you pleased, and does not make the camera handling unwieldy. unless there is a nice and white ceiling 8 to 11 feet overhead ;)

The best technique to capture a wedding photo?

Hi Neuro.
Thanks for that, side splitting funny, I have read many of Roger’s posts, but that one had passed me by and has to be one of his best!

Cheers, Graham.

Sorry, but...seriously?

For starters, I'd recommend reading Roger's apparently relevant blog post:

What should I replace my 7D II with?

Naturally the 1DX2 would be my preferred choice - but they are pricey!

Have you considered the 1DX Mk1? Currently I use a 7D2 and 1DX (Mk1) and for the majority of the time the 1Dx is the better camera by a significant margin. Note I am very focal length limited as Canon do not currently make a longer lens than the one I have. Yet, despite the lack of pixel density and wider field of view it outperforms my 7D2 in all but ideal conditions. As to the AF? It is a no brainer the 1DX is just better - a lot better.

The 1DX Mk1 is not silly money these days - just food for thought?

RF 200 ?

What do you mean by bread and butter lenses btw?
He probably means lenses that are not going to cost $7,000 and sell very few copies... except for the big tele lenses for birding and sports. A RF 70-200mm IS f/2.8L would be a bread and butter lens, also a 135mm and true macro lenses. Then there's the non-L lenses. I don't mean to speak for you, Mr. Spokane, that's just my interpretation of what I think you were saying. No disrespect intended. I hold your experience and knowledge in high esteem. I have learned a lot from many of your posts.
