Actually I don't have a problem with reviews like that - anyone can fawn over a camera and say how wonderful it is, but the reported downsides tell me more about the type of camera it is. Good reviews will pick up on ergonomic things like those reported above and address them - and if no-one else mentions them they I know it is a minor issue that one person was annoyed enough to mention. And I know what to look out for when testing it.

Add to all that, there are several sites whose opinions I will read/listen to with greater attention. And those who are interested in the things I like to shoot (heaven help those reviewers who shoot a few photos of their kid playing in the park and say they have reviewed it as a sports camera!!).

When are these cards becoming available and what's the price? That's what I want to know. I plan to switch all of my SD cards to this...as I break SD cards all the time (pins break off) and I still have a bunch of cameras that shoot with them.

Sigma Lenses will come for the R mount. I think it is a love hate relationship between Canon and 3rd party lensmakers. On one hand, Canon does not like it that they sell lenses they coul dsell themselfs, on the other hand, they have to "allow" other companies to make lenses for their system, simply because it helps the system getting more interesting (bigger variety of lenses, also special lenses. And just imagine, Sigma (or Tamron, or Tokina) would make lenses for Sony and Nikon, but not for Canon. That would be a reason to switch the system.
I think, Sigma had to wait until they had enough information about the Nikon and Canon mount, especially flangedistance and -diameter cause this affects the optical lens design. The electronic part will be a lot of hard work reengineering it, but basically, they can keep working with the EF system, and just use this functionality at the beginning.

I recall that in the flurry of rumors over the last month or so there was clear contradiction between September release rumours and 'quarter 1 2019' rumours - the heavy possibility is that both were correct but they were about different cameras. There were also rumors that more than one camera was due to drop. I'm not convinced that Canon would vacate the 'semi-professional' FFM segment for any period - the lens development that they have clearly done to date is far more than you would do for an EOS-R camera alone.

I've been shooting the 80D since it was released in 2016 and absolutely love it, I carry it with me almost every day. I also have both the 50 1.8 and the 10-18 and they are both actually quite sharp and VERY decent lenses.
You will not regret getting the 80D. It even feels more professional like than any Rebel, 77D, SL2, etc. (a little bigger and feels better in the hand). In my opinion it handles much better than any Rebel or like Rebel camera, it's a step up.

Also, the 70-300mm L-Lense works absolutely perfect on it as you mentioned you have that lens. My 70-300L is basically glued to my 80D !

I also have the 6D2 and love it but I do not use the 6D2 more than my 80D; They each have their place but in my opinion, the 80D might actually be more versatile than the 6D2, especially when it comes to longer lenses.....The 6D2 is a little better camera than the 80D but not by much.

Thanks, by the way. Glad you enjoyed them. More to come. It really is lovely how easy it is to edit Canon files in ACR/Lightroom. Select 'Camera Standard' as the profile and the colors, well, just work. Requiring minimal post-processing.

Superficially this reads much like the CMOSIS sensor, but smaller.

I don't think sony is that far ahead of canon right now but as time goes on this could be a problem for canon. I think canon has the best ergonomics, great color, great lenses and support which is why I stay with them. They make taking pictures enjoyable. Being a software developer I know right now that finding and keeping the right people is the hardest part for companies. If your company is not seen as a company that is going in the right direction, it gets harder and harder to attract those people. I am sure all the Japanese camera companies are going through this especially with the declining young population in Japan. With sensors going into almost everything. I think sony has the advantage. This is one of their main lines of business. It will be interesting to see though. Personally I don't care too much because I can take a fabulous photo with any of the new cameras no matter who makes them.

They've probably redid the microlenses (they have a patent on that) to adapt them to a shorter flange distance.

My mistake. The split is to show which direction to move the focussing ring in manual focus when you have hit the screen to show what you want to focus on (start at 2:55):

The focus distance is only shown with RF lenses apparently.

I have shot the moon w/ my old 500 F4 (version 1) and don't remember seeing a green halo.

(Over)Expose the moon bright enough and you'll get a halo with any lens. That's not to say that a halo from a DO lens will be exactly the same as a halo from a non-DO lens. It will vary for any two disparate lens designs.

The speedbooster had an internal lens and the more glass surfaces you have the more likely you are to have aberrations.

I was between 1/2000 and 1/4000 for those shots.

I guess I say it's pronounced because I've never actually seen it in anything I've done before. I was more curious than anything else. Thanks for the explanation!

The R is fundamentally solid on stills, thanks in no small part to DPAF, but missing some key specs. This is because Canon feels very little competitive pressure. Despite all the Sony/Fuji/mirrorless hype DSLR sales are strong, EF lens sales are strong, and they remain the market leader. By the numbers Sony has taken Nikon sales, not so much Canon. Even the M series sells well. Given the market Canon will of course skip some features to position the R below the 5D IV.

On video I don't know if they are really protecting their cinema line or if there's simply a fab issue. I never thought DR was that big of an issue, but Canon lagged on DR for a long time simply due to fab limitations. Maybe we're in the same spot with sensor readout speed and TDP.

If so I hope they resolve it fast because they can't sit on cropped underperforming video as long as they sat on DR.

Canon could reinvent the DSLR into the DML. Think of the sales they could create if they had parallel systems (5DM5 and ML 5D M5, 1Dx M3 and the ML 1Dx M3, 7D M3, ML 7D M3). Yes everyone could use the EOS L lens on the ML but if the new RF lenses are lighter and sharper, then over time there would be a lot of replacement glass purchased.

Well that is my thought on this might play out.

The EF mount uses serial communication, not parallel, for different things on different pins. Three of the current eight pins on the EF mount are power supply voltages only, not data. And again, you're making a huge assumption that some or all of those extra pins are not there solely for the benefit of the added control ring on the adapters/new lenses.

Yeah. It’s also possible that the new pins do NOTHING right now; and are merely there to provide the possibility of future functionality without changing the lens mount (for example, higher voltage power feed for future lenses without blowing up existing lenses).

As someone (I think neuro?) pointed out, they already improved the speed of the EF data transfer several times in the past 30 odd years since release. You can get a lot of data across just one short serial link at very high speeds without needing to change the interface.

I very much doubt it’s about improving data transfer.
