My main man, again. :)

Well, he's my grandson. He's with me 24/7. I am always armed. Always. I served 4 years in the U.S. Army and 6 years in the USMC. I'm a combat veteran. If I can't protect him, nobody can. As far as some kook skimming the internet for photos of children, that person carries that burden. Some kook with a long lens could just as easily snap photos out in public. This old town square is ringed with two story townhouses, any of which could conceal a perv. For the life of me, I don't understand the above stuff. I try not to live in fear. I appreciate the good intention. I do. But I think the fear is overblown. If anyone would like to PM their concerns, I am open to that. However, you do what you think is appropriate, and I will do what I think is appropriate. That way we can all be happy. :) Some might argue this is an infringement upon my grandson's privacy. I disagree. He's out in public. There is no privacy. He's not in the bath tub. Mom and dad usually whipped out photographs of us kids to show whomever would look when I was a kid and still do so. Never felt violated. And it isn't any of his pediatrician's business either. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...02b765ff0ea_story.html?utm_term=.11e124cdf66b

Question on RF 24-105 vs EF 24-105 II, adapters and on BG-22

As to the first point, my two biggest beefs with the EF version are extreme uncorrectable distortion at 24mm and awful corner softness at 24mm. From sample images I saw on DP Review and Imaging Resource, both of these issues persist on the RF version, disappointingly. The corner softness does not seem to be quite as bad, but is still present (and worse than the EF 24-70). Remains to be seen if the distortion can be 100% corrected within DPP (no lens profiles yet).

The very nature of the 24-105mm range, apparently, is compromise - specifically, reach for IQ. There’ll probably never be a stellar lens with this zoom range...

So far so good, the Canon EOS R pleasantly surprised Jared

Re 1.: I do certainly care for camera progress (but more in fundamental progress based on physics such as not yet mature light-field photography). But your reaction just because I just miss the joystick in the spec list (did not yet try an EOS R) was quite out of any proportion. You are exactly this sort of rude posters that I hoped will never pop op on Canonrumors, where most people seem to be nice characters. Obviously, times are changing.

Re 4.: Certainly, you nailed it :p

This is my last reply to any of your postings in this thread, Mr. Angus. Interesting to see that nobody liked your attitude here so far...[/QUO)TE]

Oh, so you haven't actually tried touch and drag AF selection? That makes sense

Canon Launches New Flagship XF705 Professional Camcorder Featuring 4K Video Recording at 60P/4:2:2/10-Bit

@Talys - mostly in agreement, but got a somewhat different take on the following bullets:

1. any higher DIGIC performance is instantly gobbled up by and diverted off to video stuff (higher framerates, higher level codecs) and associated audio stuff instead of giving us e.g. even better and much more intelligent (stills) AF performance ... or IBIS ... or ... whatever other useful for stills capture items.

2. number of SKUs is evidently [FACT] of no concern to Canon (or Nikon) whatsoever.
* As long as they each are having far more than a dozen SKUs in the retail channel of current and last generations APS-C mirrorslappers in various "body-only" and "bundled with various kit lens/es".
* and for Canon even multiplied by 3 utterly unnecessary differently "continental"-branded SKUs: * Rebel / Kiss / xxxD * ... ffs!

So ... offering a few additional "uncompromised by video stuff, geared for best-possible stills performance camera" SKUs and at the same time cutting down all those "pure marketing sh*t SKUs" would actually lighten logistical efforts and cost of sales ... considerably.

Next Canon FF sensor

According to the article, Sony's ability to spread R & D costs over making vast numbers of sensors for all kinds of devices and third parties, particularly phones, means they can make a business case for much faster sensor development than a smaller scale manufacturer of sensors, such as Canon. so they do. Which is why Sonikon has the sensors they have and we have what we have. And unless Canon can sell a lot more sensors, that probably won't change.

Is the 5D4 sensor "good enough"? Right now, sure. So was the sensor in my 5D3 in its day. But there is a marked difference between those two. And there is a difference between the current Sony sensors and anything we have. It's significance is obviously controversial. But they can make a 40+Mp sensor with greater speed and DR and market it without an AA filter. I think a lot of people just really would like Canon to offer something like that. In other words, a 5Dsr equivalent with sensor tech that is not from 2012. I don't think a lot of folks would care if its mirrorless or not. Personally I hope it is, since the new RF lenses will be the way of the future. But if it's a dslr, that's OK too, since the EF lenses aren't too shabby either.

Well, what will be, will be. Differences among sensors are significant only to the extent that they affect the quality of the images that we produce. How much is enough? How big do you want to print? Unless you use a tripod every time you can, you are compromising IQ. Does it really make a difference? Maybe. Sometimes. Most likely Canon has a sensor or two in the pipeline. So we shall see bye and bye. Have a good day.

Here's the manual for the EOS R!

I was meaning what happens to FPS in AE Servo. Seems like data flow is an issue for most mirrorless? (A9 being an exception)
but I may be very wrong with what I think is the reason.
You'r not, A9 has stacked sensor and it can read entire sensor much faster. It reads entire sensor in 1/160s which is only slightly slower than it's mechanical shutter. Other A7x bodies including (A7III) can do it in 1/15s with uncompressed RAW and 1/30s with compressed RAW.

Unfortunately it brings it's own problems, in this case banding... https://diglloyd.com/blog/2017/20170604_1206-Sony_A9-PatternNoise-at-ISO100-PineCreek.html

Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III one of two “Big White Lenses” coming ahead of Photokina [CR3]

Are you using the array for our Dragonfly and Damselfly thread?

No but I did try for an afternoon! When we started building the array I tried out one of the 400's "in the wild" before we mounted it but they are no good for dragonflies, or at least the way I shoot them - I really need to walk around and be able to take shots quickly.. I use the 100-400 II on a 7D II for "portraits" and when I'm hunting for new species, the 100 f2.8 macro for close-ups, and the 300 f4 on a 5D III for in-flight shots (I prefer it over the 100-400 for that purpose because of its lower weight and its large focusing ring). The Dragonfly Array *is* named after the dragonfly photography as that helped inspire its development (the two mounts also kind of look like the eyes of a dragonfly).

Article about Eos R system by DPreview

Generally positive, it seems. It is always funny when reviewers make comments such as "The pictures it takes are great," or "It also feels superb when you first pick it up: solid, comfortable and with well-positioned controls, at least for the most part," and then move along as quickly as possible as if those attributes aren't very important or interesting.

Well, ""The pictures it takes are great," is probably the most important thing for photographers. Along with ergonomics. But forum dwellers and most reviewers are so obsessed with technical innovation that they put almost all the emphasis on that. And that's one reason why Canon buyers are so ridiculed - they want a camera that takes great pictures and also feels superb in the hand - but that isn't a high priority for the tech-minded. The universal internet love that Sony is shown is only proof of that. The Sony FFs I tried (and briefly owned) did not take great pictures and was extremely uncomfortable to hold. Obviously the tech-minded review sites don't care very much about that.

So Butler tries to play it down the middle. The camera itself is not so hot, but the system shows promise of being hot in the long run. I guess from DPR, that's pretty good for Canon.

I suppose some reviewers would find fault if Canon produced a new sensor that delivered specs on par with Sony. They'd even ridicule Canon if Canon were to adopt Sony sensors. That the R produces great photos is an afterthought.

I thought the review was mostly a mindless rehash of well known points, which the author used to obscure what his readers might find interesting in the new camera and camera system.

IS IT TRUE

Starting from flangeback distance for
Nikon Z = 16mm
Sony E = 18mm
Canon R = 20mm
Canon EF = 44mm
Nikon F = 46.5mm

cross-mount adapters (without glass/optical elements) are only possible for (sufficiently) longer FFD lens mount to shorter FFD mount.

so no adapters for Nikon Z lenses to any other mount. none for Sony FE to Nikon Z or Canon R. Canon R to Nikon Z maybe possible geometrically.

Canon EF and Nikon F to any of the short FFD mirrorfree mounts geometrically possible (and partially in existence)

But ...both Nikon and Canon have evidently implemented not only new mount geometry in Z and R but also "enhanced communication / protocols". since both Z and R mounts maintain backwards compatibility to F respectively EF lenses, it seems plausible that (some ) thirdparty makers can build
* an EF lens to Z-mount adapter limited to capabilities of EF and F mount protocol
* adapter for Z lenses to EF or RF mount is technically not possible (without optical elements) since Z has shorter flangeback
* RF lenses to Z might be possible, but maker would need to have RF mount protocol knowledge (licensed or reverse engineered) - i don't think we will see any soon

Mismatch: 80D vs 5D ii for Portraits?

I’ve never used the 5D2 but I technically prefer the FF look when it comes to portrait shots. Of course, this is not to say I haven’t gotten good results with a crop camera, but I’ve found it easier with FF. Shots are a bit crisper too, which makes any prints made a bit more vibrant/3D looking.

That said, in your situation would I go out of my way to jump to FF? Probably not. The 80D and 50mm shot “wide open” is already approximating the look of 85mm FF at 2.8. If you’re already happy, I’d stick with the status quo. I only made the jump to FF because I wanted more...

Expectations for Pro EOS-R

I agree with the above poster - that’s the next logical step. Take the 50MP sensor, remove the low-pass filter entirely, add DPAF functionality, improve high ISO performance (or at least reduce color noise). In fact, taking a look at the manual for the R, the crop options and C-RAW mode could come in incredible handy for a higher-res body. Imagine a 20MP crop mode (instead of just 11) or having 50MP compressed RAW files at only 30-40MB. Only major issue would be speed...the existing R is already slower than a 5D4...

Excellent shots. I especially like the first one. Well done, CFB.
Thank you. I always appreciate your feedback. I am finding that volunteering at these charity fashion shows (and they are almost all charity events) gives me lots of practice I would never have had. I can't afford to pay models, so this is working out great for me and actually getting me a little paid work on the side. Great fun!

So just how busy is 2019 going to be?

Maybe I could see the dropping the 5DSR line in favour of mirrorless. The majority of users of that camera are not action shooters(although obviously some use it for wildlife). I cannot see the 7d or 1d line disappearing yet as mirrorless is just not up to scratch for that use. Maybe we should pay close attention to what they do with the rebels. If they drop low end DSLRs then they will lose the models that get users into DLSRs, after which they upgrade to higher end models. Without a rebel lineup we could safely say canon are giving up on DSLRs. if they keep it then DSLRs are not going anywhere yet. So a revised possible set of releases for next year could be the 7D3, 90D, 1 Rebel, EOS R(x) 3-5 R lenses or7D3, EOS R(x) and the mirroless lenses?
