Canon PowerShot SX70 HS officially announced

Good to see 1080p @ 120fps. Any idea 4k video and 1080p 120 has any crop. I cannot find anything in their spec sheet.
They claim that 4K video is cropped from the centre of the sensor. Presumably, the 1080 video will be cropped from the same area as the 4K, but with 2X2 pixel binning.... The HD video, if they use 4X4 binning, will take up 75% of the full width of the sensor (3840 out of 5184 pixels)

Odd Friday idea: EOS R adapter with leaf shutter

I believe that if a leaf shutter could move at an "instantaneous" speed. where you put may not matter much. But because there would be speed constraints, the larger the shutter has to be, the more difficult is to avoid vignetting and so on at higher speeds. Otherwise, why not put a leaf shutter on the focal plane, and get the best of both types? Also, I believe there would more difficulties to put a larger shutter inside the lens barrel.
I know of the limitations of the speed of the various types of shutter, I also know that as nothing travels instantaneously, leaf shutters, as I already said, are poorly understood and at high speeds they work badly, they can affect the dof, cause vignetting and badly impact bokeh as well as having the effect of dramatically lowering your flash power.

What I'd like is a link to a knowledgable source that says they have to be in a single place inside the lens, I don't believe that. I also believe that one could be put in an EF to RF adapter though it might well be bulky.

New Macro lens from Irix.

Not much information here. Just that a new lens is coming.
The teaser does show a macro lens(1:1 mag ratio clearly marked on focus ring) with a tripod collar. Its only 4 days for the countdown so we will have all details then. And with min focus distance being around 35cms its certainly longer than 100mm.

Sony Colors - Something Wrong With It?

Well some people don't agree with you...

"As I followed through the review on my, it seemed that the Sony displayed an overall superior brightness and level of detail. I own an Optoma UHD65 and I am contemplating an upgrade. I was leaning towards the Sony VW285ES, primarily because it also presumably offers remote firmware upgrades and offers 3D support and I feel your review confirmed that decision. I tried very hard to pay very close attention when you pointed out differences in detail, but each time you noted the difference in favor of the Optoma, it looked like the Sony was actually better."

https://www.projectorcentral.com/sony-vpl-vw285es-4k-projector-review.htm

"But the other outstanding performance factor on the VW285ES is the precision color balance in the D65 color presets. You don't need to bother calibrating this projector to get a perfectly beautiful, natural, and extremely satisfying video picture. Just select Cinema Film 1 or 2, or Reference, and you're all set."

I for one don't buy the "Sony green" argument (the exception being their 1+2. generation A7 camera series - the 3. generation fixed that).

I've seen countless YT videos comparing, testing etc and found issues with all of them (using laptop monitor TN panels for comparing colors, different lenses used, bad PP...).

The most common problem seems to be confirmation bias. It doesn't matter whether people are using Canon, Nikon or Sony gear. I seen a YT video where people where comparing two images preferring image A over image B because B was "too green" - where almost everybody in the comment section thought A was "too green" - yes confirmation bias is so much fun (not really) :)

Personally I've used both 5D3, A7R2 and A7R3 - and the images I get from the A7R3 seem to invoke the most positive response of my 'audience'. Why I don't know. But my theory is that your choice of raw converter and it's profiles is much more important than the difference between say the 5D3 and A7R3.

In the end.... if you think X (projector/camera/TV) makes for a better picture than Y - then go for gear X and be happy with it!

German laws - new European "General Data Protection Regulation" (GDPR, DSGVO)

"Of course they will never share those databases with other countries or corporations."

"Of course"? Wrong, in spades. About 90% of my day job is about facilitating the lawful, proportionate sharing of personal data with other government and law enforcement bodies for the purposes of crime prevention and detection.

The sarcasm went right past you. Chill, my friend.

Industry News: Sony Expands Full-Frame Lens Lineup with Launch of 24mm F1.4 G Master™ Prime

If Canon RF has advantage, can Canon develop 1.4/20 or 1.4/24, to beat Sony 24mm F1.4 GM in such ways:

(1). Similar size and weight, but better image quality; Or,

(2). Similar image quality, but smaller or lighter?

Can Zeiss take advantage of Canon RF and develop better image quality, smaller, lighter Zeiss RF 1.4/20 or 1.4/24 than Milvus 1.4/25?

First lens adapters for Nikon Z already appearing

Likely the same for RF mount. Manual focus lenses will work fine, but unlikely to have decent AF adaptors. Fortunately what is quite likely is that someone will do a Nikon G adaptor for RF mount that has an aperture control wheel on it. That would certainly be possible.

It's also possible that someone could do the reverse for the Nikon Z mount and do an adaptor that has an aperture control wheel for EF lenses.

The only issue in both cases is that this will only work if the mount can supply enough power to operate the lenses and the adaptors without it recognising a valid lens attached. They may both disable, or severely restrict, power until a valid lens is attached.

Canon officially announces 4 new RF lenses, mount adaptors and Speedlite EL-100

on the one hand I´m a little disappointed about the new R-System and at the end also about the pricing for the new lenses - on the other hand I´m calmed down, because there is no need for me to buy new gear - with my 1dxII and my L-lenses I´ll top the current R-system-body for serveral years.
I'm curious about the new bodies canon will develop in the next ten years - but at the moment: no need to change anything - thank you very much CANON, for saving my money hahaha !!!

So the banding is back??

Maybe but you cannot know how fast the 50 1.2 focuses. In addition you continue to use shorter focal lengths. From 200 to 85 to 50...

Yeah, like I said, there’s more reasons I’m selling the 1dx2. And I change lenses and FL’s quite often. I buy both for FL and for quality. The 85 was as much about IS and f1.4 plus weather sealing as much as it was about 85mm. The 200 was also sold due to my health. I’ve owned lots of UWA also, but I don’t like them so generally I’m not slightly interested in anything shorter than 35mm. And since I’m more about using my light and do portraits with invironment and the 85 isn’t fast enough for soccer, 35 and 50 would be a great combo, and I’ve owned those many times previously also. I change needs and don’t want a lot of lenses I spend money on light.

Time for a playful topic! What's in your two lens bag?

Ok different bags for situations.

Everyday shooting car trunk 500 f4 w ext and 100-400ii also with same 1.4ext yongnuo 600 flash w better beamer

Suitcase Travel with free time 100-400ii also with 1.4ex and depending on time of month. Sigma14mm f1.8 dark times 16-35L ii other times.

Backpacking (targeting waterfalls landscapes) 24-105L, rokinon 14mm 2.8. Fiesol tripod
Light pack hiking SL1 body 18-55mm and 55-250mm still tripod tho. Tried gorilla pod but sometimes the picture needs to be taken from a spot where height is needed.

In addition to lenses the bag has on any given day, extra batteries, extension tubes extra CF And SD cards, lens cloth, flash the little ex90 I think, blackrapid dual strap, Advil, moleskin, wireless release.

Problems with Canon Digital Cameras

You don't specify what models you bought and which failed. The only one you specified, it's not clear if it's a PowerShot G9 (a 2007 model), or one of the newer G9X (very different). Also, I don't remember non-EOS Rebels. Hard disks weren't a great choice for camcorders, solid-state storage is much more reliable.

Did you buy them new or used? Heavy use and not proper storage can shorten the life of many devices. Cheaper models aren't usually made for heavy use. Some environmental conditions (i.e. hot, humid weather) are worse for photo and electronic equipment, and may require careful storage.

Here the minimum warranty is two years, so I don't believe Canon makes camera with many chances to fail earlier. My 35 years old A-1 still works, and I plan to use it this weekend. The T-90s works too.... one was bought as a non-working one, to be used as a spare part source, it looks it was dropped, fixing it was easy, and it still works... (maybe there was a reason it was nicknamed "the Tank" in Japan).

The six years old 5D3 never missed a beat. My experience with Canon reliability was pretty good.

That said, any device could and will fail. You're experience is quite on the unlucky side, anyway, but more info about which models failed and what failed could be useful.
