Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Development Continues [CR2]

With the new eos r release, is this lens still confirmed in development? I've been holding off on a zoom for my run and gun work and wanted to know whether to wait for this lens. I returned a tamron g2 because I wanted to stay in the canon line even though the tamron had weather sealing, good autofocus and similar iq to my canon primes from what I saw. I don't need a zoom yet for paid work but if forced to, I'll pick up the 24-70mkii l lens.

Amazon seems to think the EOS R will come out on October 9

Ok, I guess everywhere seems to be quoting dates close to this now, so no big secret.

I'm surprised nobody has noticed this yet, or maybe they have and everyone but me knows that it's not worth paying attention to. Amazon's preorder for the EOS R currently states "This item will be released on October 9, 2018." What does everyone make of this? Are they just pulling a date out of their ass? Everything I've heard is a vague "late October."

Also, something that's a little odd, I can't seem to find the EOS R on their site by searching within the site, only by googling it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H484HLT/?tag=canorumo-20

Edit: Something else to note... The release date that they quote changes if you choose a camera package that comes with a lens... Choosing the 50mm says it will not be released until October 25. Choosing the 35mm and the 28-70 say they will not be released until December 20. These dates seem oddly specific and very spread out to be something they just randomly came up with... I dunno.

Replacement for the Canon XF305 around the corner [CR1]

Try reading again... They refers to every Cinema EOS camera made (which have built in NDs and XLRs), not the GH5 (which does not). The GH5 and BMPCC4k are very capable small senor cameras so long as you have a range of accessories that come built into cinema cameras, dont need AF, and so long as you have good light. That means they do not compete with the Cinema EOS line, FS5/7 or EVA1, and its part of why they are priced differently.
Sorry I misread your post! I must have been sleepy!
I totally agree with your point.

So whats a 1DR going to be like

I've put my 5D4 into video mode for a few seconds, but I did not pay more for the video capability, I paid a lot less, because the higher volume of cameras sold drops the price. If the camera had no video, 2/3 of the buyers would buy something else, and the price would double.
I have to concur. Personally, very seldom do I use video mode. I would have no problem buying a stills only cam, especially if photo quality could be improved because of it and perhaps, an accompanying lower price point. However, I agree with another poster that stated there prob would be very small demand and lots of resistance for same in the real marketplace.

Opinion: Canon is causing its own problems with the RF mount

Newbie here, but wouldn't an adapter with optics inside of it be able to change the focal distance of the lens, therefore a thicker adapter could be made to adapt an RF lens to the EF-M mount? Essentially it would change the flange distance of the RF lens to one that could be longer, but still concentrate light on the APS-C sensor of the EF-M sensor? It's been quite some time since I've done optics, but I think that is possible, right? If so, it would cost a few hundred dollars, which would be offputting for the casual photographer that the M series is aimed at, but for the Pros and Prosumer Amateurs out there, it would a great way to have a second body.

Come play with the Canon EOS R RAW files

It's clear speculation, anyway.

The notion that - of itself - simplicity will win over complexity, is fundamentally flawed: a horse and cart is a lot less complex than a modern car; and an abacus much simpler than a laptop - yet look where we are.

MILC needs a USP far more compelling than "easier to make", and it currently doesn't have it.

It’s interesting though. When Apple came up with the Mac, people howled. Way back, I used to teach PC DOS part time, for fun. When macOS came out, people looked for the system config. files, and couldn’t find them. They would yell at how childish the computer was because they couldn’t edit them (while totally screwing up their machine, and calling me to fix it, but some people never learn). But the machine was even more complex. It hid it from the user though, which had it seeming to be simpler, and easier.

The thing is that these more modern cameras are much more complex in software and electronics. They’re even more complex than older, more mechanical models, but seem simpler. Apparent simplicity doesn’t mean operational simplicity, unfortunately, as computerized cameras, as we’ve found out, are ridiculously complex to understand, with far more “features” in the menus that most of us will ever need. Just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should be done.

Mirrorless isn’t simpler at all. It just shifts a necessary, though the lens optical viewing to an electronic, computerized one. The first camera from Canon doesnrvhave all the features of the 5Dmk IV, as some wanted, and expected, but that’s just a particular model version thing.

Does the R have an APS-C crop mode option?

Thanks or that info! That might just be the crop mode that kicks in when you mount an APS-C lens. I hope it can be switched on with any lens via a function button or menu setting.
I hope so too. This is a feature I really loved on the A7R3, though to be fair, one of the reasons I really loved it was that the RAW files coming out of that camera are gigantic, less of a problem with CR3's better compression. Still, it is nice to get an APSC shooter out of a full frame 100-400 when birding, because often, the center crop is all I want anyways.

Low Pass Filter?

In my personal opinion here is where I’d
rather have a filter and would rather not:

Travel/Sightseeing: Yes
Landscape/Natural scenery: No
Architecture: Yes
Event shooting: Depends, but mostly no
Portrait: No
Macro: No
Animals/birds: Yes

Ideally I’d like to see an implementation like Sony did with the RX1R II - have it be user-adjustable (or removable). Sometimes it’s nice to have, but other times, yes, I feel it can get in the way.
