Canon Maintains a Dominant Position in the Market for 2023

Thank you, seeing the numbers, rather than %, shows how far ahead Canon and S*ny are.

Mirrorless 4 - 6:
4. Fujifilm: 380,000 units
5. Panasonic … 140,000 units
6. OM Digital … 120,000 units

The post also has shipment numbers for DSLR and compact digital camera’s:

Digital SLR shipments 2023
  1. Canon … 920,000 units ↓
  2. Nikon … 130,000 units ↓
  3. Ricoh Imaging … 10,000 units →
Compact digital camera shipments 2023
  1. Sony: 470,000 units ↓
  2. Canon … 460,000 units ↓
  3. Panasonic … 120,000 units ↓
  4. OM Digital … 60,000 units ↓
  5. Nikon … 50,000 units
  6. Fujifilm … 50,000 units ↓
  7. Ricoh Imaging … 50,000 units→
Tough times ahead for OM Digital, Panasonic and Ricoh (unless the sell a ton of their new film camera ;) ).

It's really fascinating to me that they sold almost 1 million DSLR's that's crazy... who's buying those over the mirrorless? I thought DSLRs were totally discontinued? Maybe that's old-stock? That's also more than any other maker by like a factor of 8x ... So when that market drops out, I wonder if that will hurt canon.

Canon EOS R7 v1.6.0 firmware

Hi,

Were anyone aware that there is a new firmware version 1.6.0 for the R7?

I connect my HP the the R7 today and was informed that there is a new firmware version, v1.6.0.

But when I tried to update the firmware, Canon camera connect kept saying firmware upload failed. Has anyone managed to update their R7 to this version?

When I search for the firmware in my country & US Canon website, it wasn't available. But a search on the web, it was listed in Canon Australia website; https://www.canon.co.nz/support/support-news/firmware-updates/eos-r7-firmware-version-1-6-0

Thanks.
Jason Lee
Managed to figure out what happed. One of the SFD card contain a old firmware in it, hence it can't upload.

I was able to upload and update the firmware after the old file is deleted.

Advice on some gadgets please....

Soon it's time for gift shopping, zhis year I found three gadgets which I consider for my friends.
So if anyone has used them already please give me some advice if they are worth the money:

1. Meike Blue and Gold strip filter for the EF to RF adapter

So if anyone can share some real life experience I would be happy

First Powder-Compressed all-Sapphire (Aluminum Oxide) Glass Lens Now Works Great!

OMG!
I'll have to replace all my current lenses, my cellphone, tablet and laptop.
But it certainly will be worth it! Much better optically, scratchfree, less expensive, sounds like you just invented a kind of perpetuum mobile.
Sounds almost too good to be true! Can't wait to get these lenses into my already trembling hands! :)
Yup! While I do UNDERSTAND your sarcasm, I should NOTE that our under-the-radar, pseudonym NCA (North Canadian Aerospace) company is rather LARGE in terms of outright monetary-size, so it does in fact have quite the in-house technical research, development and manufacturing abilities. In fact, we are on-par with Lockheed Martin, Northrup-Grumman, BAE and Raytheon so to have a set of Sapphire-based lenses that work on APS-C, Full-Frame, Medium-Format and Ultra Large Format (150 mm by 150 mm sensors) is QUITE THE FEAT of optical, mechanical and electronics engineering!

Not many companies in the world can make a 150 mm by 150 image sensor IN-HOUSE that is 131,072 by 131,072 pixels imaged at 32-bits per RGB+Distance channel that is then NYQUIST downsampled to 16-bits per RGB+Distance channel (i.e. 64-bits per pixel) at 1000 fps!

Our internal website is already setup so PUBLIC ordering via online means should be hopefully quite soon. There's a very-advanced set of COMBINED Still Photo/Cinema Production CAMERA BODIES ALSO being made available for public sale that WAAAAAAAY OUT-PERFORM even the much-vaunted HasselBlad 200 megapixel MF still photo camera AND the Arri Alexa-65 Cinema Camera in one single package!

Canon Purchase history and frequency

It would take too much research to plot my past spending cycles but it seems to follow a pattern of body upgrade and huge cycle of lens purchases. That was certainly the case with the 5D Mark III, 5DSR and R5. The 5D cycle was lots of EF lens upgrades since that was moving from a 20D. The 5DSR was ultrawides and landscape lenses and the R5 was replacements of available RF lenses (24-70, 100-500, 100 Macro, extenders).

If they finally release a high MP R5 I hope they will support that release with some UWA lenses. The RF 100-300 has been calling my name but I await the 200-500 rumored release before I make a final decision on my telephoto replacement for the EF 600 F4 II.

It will either be a cheap 2024 and 2025 or a very expensive one!

Sports Photographer using R3 with the Canon EF 400MM 2.8II lens

I have used the RF 400 mm f2.8 lens which is basically the EF 400 mm f2.8 III lens with a permanent RF adapter bolted on. I have not had any issues focusing.
The RF lens is the EF MkIII with a permanent adapter as far as the optical elements are concerned. I'm not sure that's true for the focusing motors. Canon has highlighted that the RF 400/2.8 and 600/4 use Dual Power AF (which so far only the R3 can leverage, presumably the R1 will likewise).

I waited a long time for the R5 MkII, bought the R5 instead

I had, and still have, the R5 and bought the r5m2. I do not see much of a boost in image quality, it may even be a placebo effect to help my mind justify the expense beyond being able to hand my son my R5 for his first camera. If you do not need the features then you did exactly what you should have and saved money. Saving money is hard to do with this hobby/profession. Good job.

Blazar shows sneak peaks of Apex 1.33 Autofocus Anamorphic Lenses - Includes a Canon RF option!

I know what you are all thinking.
Did Canon come to an agreement with Blazar to use their mount? We're actually not sure. At least not from what I've seen personally.

Check out CineD's first look on their site and/or youtube

This honestly looks promising for those solo run and gun shooters trying to not only get cinema glass but as well as anamorphic flares and features.... oh and did we mention it's an autofocus option for video creators??

According to the video the lens comes in Canon RF, Sony E, Nikon Z, and FUJIFILM X mounts and now after further updates has added L Mount.
The only options to begin the set at the moment are 35mm and 50mm options with a 1.33x squeeze and both at T1.8

According to the video they were able to add more squeeze like characteristics using barrel distortion so it feels more than the 1.33x that it actually is.

If Canon really did come to an agreement with them here, this will be a huge game changer for some of us that want those beautiful anamorphic looks in their content without having to worry about Manual focus.

The big whites focusing speeds

No, not really. I didn't notice any difference between the EF 400 2.8 III and the RF variant.

Now the R3 can apparently focus the RF version faster with the "dual power AF", but I didn't notice the difference. I use it for wildlife and not sports, so maybe you'd notice the difference in that application.

I'm considering getting an EF 800 again, they're so cheap now. Yeah it vignettes at 5.6, but that doesn't really bother me. I should never have sold it.
Why not the 400mm f2.8?

The likelihood of a Canon EOS R6 Mark III this year is near zero

Do you mean you wish you’d really bought a 6Dii ? To wish that you’d nearly bought one rather suggests that whilst you’re pissed off with your R6II now, you know that in time you’ll likely learn to love it.

Nope, 6dii did what I wanted it to do. R6ii does what it wants to do. And thats after 2 years of messing with AF settings in camera etc.

R5 Mk2: when and how metering is taken

This is a question specific to the R5 Mk2 that has one (probably two) new capabilities that other Rx do not have.

Let's start with the easiest to answer.

WHEN IS METERING LOCKED?

  • ONE SHOT
    • EVALUATIVE: when focus is achieved
    • SPOT: when shot is taken (unless this is overriden in "AE lock meter. mode after focus " (this was introduced with R6 MK2 so is present also in R5Mk2 but probably not in R5 and R3)
  • SERVO
    • ALL: when shot is taken
Now to the hard one.

WHERE IS METERING TAKEN?

  • EVALUATIVE: Canon says it considers the whole scene but most say tehre's a bias towards the points on focus. I have no idea where the truth is but on R5Mk2 Canon has introduced "Detect priority AE while AF " valid only for EVALUATIVE: when on, metering is based on subject in focus, whe off, on the entire screen. So what does this really mean? If "Detect priority AE while AF" is ON is the metering taken considering the whole scene but with bias on subject in focus OR it means that metering is taken only on subject. In addition Canon says that "metering is also based on the entire screen when Subject to detect is set to None". Funny thing is that if Subject to detect is set to none, it is still possible to turn "Detect priority AE while AF" on or off, this means that we have the following combinations, for which it is not clear at all where metering is taken:
    • EVALUATIVE + "Detect priority AE while AF" ON + "Subject to detect" ON
    • EVALUATIVE + "Detect priority AE while AF" ON + "Subject to detect" OFF
    • EVALUATIVE + "Detect priority AE while AF" OFF + "Subject to detect" OFF
  • SPOT: at the center. This means that if you are in SPOT and you are tracking a subject (regardless of the AF area chosen), if you put center spot on subject and lock focus and meter, the metering is taken on the subject, but if the subject moves off-center the focusing follows the subject but the metering changes because it is taken always at the center.

Will the new R5 II de-squeeze anamorphic lenses...for Stills? Video?

How many anamorphic lenses does Canon offer in the RF mount?

Assuming Canon designs stills/hybrid bodies to sell new Canon lenses to the people who buy the bodies, what motivation does Canon have for including this capability in the R5 Mark II? What motivation does Canon have to make it possible to use this capability with older used lenses, most/all of them not even Canon?

There's your answer, I think, even though it's probably not what you want to hear.

It's a little different in the Cinema series, because the higher end Cinema industry is much more "rent" than "own", and it's much more common for folks to choose to rent a lens they want for a certain look and then rent whatever camera can accommodate it. That's likely one reason why Canon's Cinema line is so much more expensive, relative to their stills/hybrid line [Compare the 2012 $6,800 1D X to the 2013 $15,000 1D C, both sharing much of the same hardware including identical sensors]. The business model for Cinema is not based on an expectation that buyers will stick with only Canon lenses, so Canon has to make more profit on the bodies themselves.
However, Canon also makes their R5's and the like as hybrid cameras....because they know people DO film with them....
And a lot of those folks ARE using 3rd party lenses, many are anamorphic.

Canon may not be selling anamorphic lenses, but they have to know a growing number of people using their hybrid cameras are using them, and a simple software addition could certainly help sell bodies....you know?

It's easy to get an affordable anamorphic lens with an EF mount that will work very well with the R5......

Anyway, hoping they do. Again, this won't require any type of hardware to do....just software to de-squeeze the image in the view finder or at least on the flippy screen.

If an external monitor can do it easily, so can Canon....and again, other cameras do this....so, why not Canon?
