Tamron 85mm VC

According to optyczne.pl and lenstip review, there seems to be noticable spherical abberation ( just like in Canon 50 1.2 ) - i.e. when stopping down the plane of focus changes, degrading quality at apertures of about 2.2-3.5 - because object may fall out of DOF. It improves again in narrow apertures as DOF increases, therefore "hiding" the effect of missed focus. Hope it will be corrected in firmware, because just like in Tamron 24-70, it's a major optical flaw, albeit it may not be noticeable to someone who shoots wide open.

Their copy also had good accuracy when shot in close distance, but some ff/bf was present in near infinity shots.

Patent for FF 12-20 f/4

"Not an L lens"?

Can't see why Canon would make a lens like this that wasn't an "L" lens. The majority of the cost will come from the size of the glass, not the weather sealing, etc.

The more rational explanation is that this lens was one of the formulas that was tested prior to the 11-24 being released.

It doesn't say "Not an L lens"

6d and Phottix Mitros + shooting some overexposed

ScottyP said:
I sometimes get overexposed shots using the Phottix flash. It could be the metering on the camera or it could be something in the flash. The flash exposure compensation in the camera and in the flash don't always seem to do much. Any idea what might be going on?

Also almost all the metering modes claim to be good at backlit stuff. Which is best?

Dear friend Mr. ScottyP.
I use Flash = Phottix Mitros+ ( can control Phottix Odin) for 12 months , and never have any problem with my 5D MK II, 7D, 7D MK II and 5D SR.---BUT, I always use spot meter ( as recommend by our friend Mr Graham.) to get the perfect flash at the face of the model not matter of back light. Plus I set up the Thottix Flash as ETTL AND HSS= HIGH SPEED FLASH SYNC. AND USE MY CANON AT TV. MODE and set shutter speed at 1/ 125 sec. for take most of my photos with minimum vibration blur by my old hands shaking.
Good Luck.

Canon Cinema EOS C100 Mark II Body & Kits Now $1000 Off

"I was under the impression they cut prices down to $4500 quite a while ago. At least I remember contemplating picking one up on BH for that price around December/January."

Exactly, this is a ridiculous article.

I bought a C100MKII on 01-05-2016 for the $1,000 Discount at B&H (which by the way was/is a permanent discount). The price has never changed throughout 2016 so I'm not sure why all the sites are reporting this as current news.

Just had a long play with a 80D in store

I stopped in at our local camera store today and checked one out. It was sitting right next to a 70D. It felt pretty good in my hands, so I tried the 70D. They look identical, but there is a batter feel for me on the 80D. I tried the * button, my big thump presses all three at once.

Then I tried autofocus with the 18-135 kit lens. It did a fair job in the store, which could be considered as marginal lighting. Then I played with live AF. It was very slow, not as fast as I've been led to believe. About 3-5 seconds for a near to far AF.

With gray market 7D MK II's going for around $1200 and a 80D now discounted to $1170, I think the 7D would be my pick.

yet a crop vs. full frame question (500mm f4 + 7d) vs. (500mm f4 + 1.4x + 1dx)

Mikehit said:
Takesome 1 - that is my take as well. With rapidly moving subjects, there were regular reports of losing focus every third or fourth shot and while the 7D2 is better I am presuming that it is the same basic issue. The 1Dx has a more powerful battery as well as dual processors which may explain the difference. Arash's expectations are higher than most but his comments certainly set a great benchmark and you can then judge where your compromises lie.

Arash's comparison, a $1400 camera with a $2100 lens vs a $5000 camera with arguably Canon's sharpest lens that cost $6000 and fitted with an extender. Not sure I would take that comparison as a benchmark. The comparisons in the OP had at least started with the same lens.

My kind of HDR

LoneRider said:
Interesting discussion. And I've got no problem with people not liking what I do. Some of it maybe over processed. But honestly, 98% of the landscapes/cityscapes and so on are breacketed and HDR'd.

Here is my over the top HDR's. I can't find a few others from the past. Hmmm, got some smugmugging to do

Nice one..OTT sometimes is what the scene calls for...But then again OTT is in the eye of the beholder..

From 7D to 80D?

SDPhotography said:
Ergos are a concern for sure, I do a lot of hiking and backpacking, so I would imagine there is some sort of trade-off between weight and build. I don't have a local shop near me to try one out, so the input is much appreciated. Would love to hear more.

I wouldn't worry about the build at all.
The best fighter jets I the world are made of composite plastics so the idea of using 'plastic' ( a horrible derogatory work to describe some amazing technology) to build a camera body should not worry you one jot. Whether you like the feel of it is a different matter but don't let the idea of its lack of ruggedness discourage you. I seriously doubt you could push it beyond its limits when backpacking.

I had the 7D and now have the 7D2, which I bought last year. To be honest if it was now then it would be a very hard decision between the 7D2 and the 80D. The main difference for me would be the frame rate because I am not pushing the 7D2 AF to its limits.

Triggering 580 EXII and Buff-Einstein with cables from 5DsR?

Zeidora said:
Re PW from PC port, there are PC to non-TTL-hotshoe cables. That's how I use the 580 with my ArcaSwiss LF set-up. Not sure why that's not working.

Sorry, yes that would work just to fire the Einstein, but 'dumb' and thus no different from the optical slave triggering. Was meaning remote power control like with the CyberCommander via the PC port.

That's what I was thinking, and you don't need to be near 1:1 to see that focal plane shift in/out of focus rocking back and forth. In a perfect world every macro shot would be on a tripod. But the reality is sometimes I see something that catches my eye and I'm shooting hand held. And my X and Y axis are usually good enough, it's the Z movements that cause me headache at times.

Wouldn't that 'just' be realtime auto afma ?
No, that would be AI Servo AF taking acceleration sensors as additional input.

Not sure that the net result would be any different but either way wow that would be amazing!

Why You Should Stick with Your Canon DSLR and Forget Sony FF Mirrorless

I believe everyone reading our posts will see that I have backed up my statements with facts. You have not, and you have backed out.

If you read lensrentals more carefully, you will see that they have had problems with Sony lenses.

I'll back out the day you start backing your statements up with relevant facts. Making general claims based on internet anecdotes and things taken out of context from lensrentals blog doesn't cut it.

I wish you would dispute the facts I have presented instead of making general claims. Stick to the case instead of making personal accusations.

Selling my 7Dmk2 for the 1Dx

Yes it's a common issue to have an IQ hit when using crop bodies on lower end FF glass. You are trying to extract more detail out of a smaller area of the lens thus any imperfections will get magnified. There doesn't seem to be nearly as much of a hit when using the 7Dii on the 100-400ii. I noticed the same issue when trying to pair the 7Dmki with a 70-300L

Canon XC10 to Get Major Firmware Update for NAB? [CR1]

Holy Lord discussing video on a photo community.

Have you guys ever heard of image quality?

It's a magical term used to describe how the images look, based on a few factors: Resolution, dynamic range, compression, colour reproduction, digital artefacts (aliasing, rolling shutter), motion cadence, among a few other things,

And, you know why the GH4 is considered lower end vs the XC10? priced higher?

simple, image quality.

Compared to the GH4, the XC10 produces images with markedly

-higher dynamic range in Canon Log, and
-much better colour reproduction and skin tones, with
-MUCH lower rolling shutter,
-MUCH MUCH less compression, and
-no digital sharpening artefacts, and
-vastly superior lowlight performance.

Do these show up in the spec sheets? no.

What does show?

Does any other camera on the market produce
4:2:2 305mbps images? Any are approved for Teir One Broadcast aqcuisition by the EBU?
any of them have Autofocus?
As good of an image stabilization?
as good of an image quality?
unlimited recording time?
Zero overheating/battery drain issues?

Please, just stop. The XC10 has some shortcomings but no other camera on the market can do what it does, please stop reviewing specs and shoot with the damn camera or at least get some knowledge on what makes a video camera good or bad.

I've just had a look at the kickstarter page for this lens (I'd previously only read the write-up on PP linked to by the OP), and I'll admit that of the additional sample images shown on the KS page, there were actually a couple there that I quite liked. I actually think PP have done the KS campaign a disservice by choosing the crumby sample images they used in the article.

I love that there are plenty of lenses still available at the $450 rewards tier, yet many backers have opted to pay $50, $100, $150, and even $400 more, to secure a lens with a low serial number. Unbelievable!

d.

I've always wondered why a low serial number matters so much to some for many different products.

Whatever, but my Jupiter-3 arrived with a passport that has been signed by a laboratory opticist and a serial number that actually lacks one digit! This must be something absolutely priceless! From the specialist Soviet lens site I found out that my lens might be something they made when they introduced the 2040 series in 1967.
Makes me think of Bulgakov and Solzenitshyn...the thoroughly inferior products the Russians produced and of how we laughed when we made craft paper to send to the Soviets and we made all kinds of things to sabotage the production and delay the train.

Somewhere in the Soviet Union there were people who tried their best to do the best they could, facing the politrucks, the laws of physics and the famous Russian mentality....I cannot express the depth of my respect to their persistance and devotion.

So yes, my special serial number that is lacking a number is Greatly Significant to me.
One day, I might actually get to take a picture with this lens.
Now that would be great!
