Budget ~ $1000, Sony A5100 or Samsung NX500???

I've owned that lens once and sold it. If it was an f/2 i would keep it (ok to be slightly larger)
It doesn't meet requirement 1-4

Anyways, i checked out DXOmark and the Sony 35 f/1.8 resolves 11 perceivable pixels out of 24 on the a6000.
However, the Samsung 30mm f/2 resolves 14mp out of the older nx20's 20mp sensor which is very high. I'm guessing it should resolve around 18-20mp once tested on the NX1's/NX500's 28mp sensor (no AA filter).

Another crazy gem of a lens is the Samsung 10mm Fisheye. I's 1/3 the volume and less than 1/3 the weight (71g) of a Rokinon 8mm fisheye!!

I think i'm leaning towards the Samsung. It's crazy how a whole system decision can be made because of 1 lens (the 30mm)

Thoughts on the Nikon D400

Mt Spokane Photography said:
I always suspected that they had to purchase a minimum number of D4 sensors, and with sales slowing, they were looking for a way to use them without hurting D4 sales. I don't think it worked.

We are going to see more of this throwing products out to see what sticks. Canon is starting to do it as well.

It would be a simple, and not very costly retool, to fix the ergo problems on the DF which would make it a fairly fine body to use after that. AFAI could infer from the rep's' responses the present DF's a serious flop.
OTOH, the 1v3 is getting a fair bit of attention and so will the new 1J5 because of their very high fps abilities. But it's a very pricely little ML system, even if it goes like a cheetah.

Super stacked teleconverters: Life @ 1880mm

I tried stacking my 1.4XII and 2XII on my 600mmL and 1D MK III for a 21XX equivalent focal length. The result was poor, and it still wasn't long enough.

This one is from yesterday with 1200mm equiv using my SX50. Its viewable, but not pretty.

That nest is in the top of a very high power transmission line tower. I think thenest must be 5 ft deep or more. It took them 3 years to build.

Canon T6i Hands On Review

Marsu42 said:
* you didn't test phase af tracking, just video af - I take it you know the difference. You're just shooting stationary birds and say the focus system is "very good" (sic!). And you didn't have a look how much you can customize phase af tracking in the firmware. This is one potential big difference to the 70d.

760d should have the same af as 7d which has been praised. so the potential differences could, indeed, be in software.

How do I tell if I got a de-centred lens? (Samyang 14mm f/2.8)

EVen if you get a good copy of the 14mm f/2.8 Rokinon/Samyang, it still has a generous amount of distortion that you have to correct if you have something with a straight horizontal line in your picture. I found a lens profile for the LR which is doing an OK job though it is for the 5DII.

see here http://joopsnijder.blogspot.com/2012/03/lightroom-lens-profile-for-samyang-14.html

Budget photo: Canon 100-400mm (I) Vs Tamron 150-600mm

That's a really nice shot of the killdeer Alan. It shows that the lens was and still is really good.

If you can get the v1 for significantly less than the tamron then go for it. If the price is close to the tamron then I think its a better choice because you have 600 without a tc.

I have the tamron and shoot with friends who use the v1 and v2 canons. All 3 are good. The "is" on the v2 is the best, tamron 2nd, v1 3rd.

note: all done by p&s

You are drawing attention to what we do not want to hear :D

The subject and composition are 99% of the image value. All cameras can generally produce good images, and technically perfect images are nice, but most would grade a image on the composition and subject.

1. so you suggest my sharing is not something that others want to see. i can delete it if it is not interested.
2. "all cameras can generally produce good images" <- agree, but not many people see it this way, glad you see it this way!!!...
3. "most would grade a image on the composition and subject" <- so base on your eyes, those photos are good or bad? to me, i want to have her visuals and skills...

again, i do not mind to delete my post if it is not interested... sorry, i am a very straight person...

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Coming Next Month? [CR2]

Canon Rumors said:
I know the lens is coming, nailing down announcement dates on lenses has always been hard. They seem to be a moving target.
And rumors are still just rumors. I'd never make a decission based just on a rumor.
If I'd need gear now I'd buy it now.
If I'd have time to wait, I can wait and see if the rumor comes true.

Thank you Craig, keeping us entertained and provided with stuff to discuss :)

Review: Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

... if you can afford to shell out an extra $300 for the $899 Sigma 24-105mm f/4, you’ll certainly benefit ...
Yeah DXO! IF!

If some extra 50% in MRSP don't matter.
If white box prices of the 24-105L don't matter and - most important -
If you can get a new Sigma 24 - 105/4.0.
They seem to be out of stock and it is discussed that they are discontinued. But that's just a rumor ;)

Complaints about Panasonic Service

old-pr-pix said:
I know Roger used to report statistics, but I haven't seen any lately. I don't recall any comment from Craig.

Interestingly enough, it seems Olympus is evaluating whether they should establish a CPS equivalent in U.S. Maybe they see a potential competitive advantage over Panasonic?

Craig made a comment to one of my posts a couple of years back about the long time it took for Nikon to repair lenses, and the inability for him to do a simple cleaning, because the lenses are glued closed.

Sony is establishing repair centers for pro Camera users, and since they are heavily invested in Olympus, they might have offered to share the centers.

Panasonic has been badly clobbered financially and is struggling to pull out of some failed business decisions. the losses on TV sales have really hurt them.

I think they have been forced to cut back on everything that does not bring in a profit. A once proud leader in the electronics industry that was not willing to produce what the customers wanted. They kept making plasma TV sets while buyers wanted LED. By the time they got on the bandwagon, Japanese produced panels cost a lot more to make compared to LG and Samsung, so it went from bad to worse. The drop in the value of the yen is apparently helping, their stock has been rising.

Underwater Housing for 5DMKII (Kickstarter/Indiegogo?)

There is one more manufacturer from Hong Kong - Meikon https://www.facebook.com/pages/Meikonhk/1528885284057597
I use their case for Canon 5DIII with 24-105L
It's not that expensive and very good for snorkeling.
Their cases can be used for diving as well (but not the case for 5DIII, it has no option for external flash).

Using CF card in Android with OTG USB cable

Bennymiata said:
The quality of the cable is very important with large files.
Lindy make a huge range of otg cables and I've found them to work really well. They only cost $8 or so.
I am in no way associated with lindy.com, just a happy customer as they even have a branch in Australia.
To get images off my cf card, I just plug the camera directly into my tablet rather than use a card reader.
It could be that the android device needs some voltage to work the cf cards, so they may not work with readers as they also need power to run.
Get yourself the correct cable (mini usb to micro usb) and plug the camera into your phone or tablet, give it a few moments to connect, and you will be able to choose between the sd and cf cards in you 5d3.

Thanks, this works. I have a Lindy USB OTG cable with Micro B for the phone and Mini B for the camera, I had been using it to get digital audio out of the phone to pass through a Fiio Eo7K DAC/amp. Plugged the 5D3 directly into the phone and it sees it as a camera. Sometimes we are so set on solving a particular problem that we can't see a more general solution. Thanks again.

Any reliable way to differentiate the Samyang 35mm AE?

I've also just noticed that the AE version for Canon lacks the manual aperture controls ( of course, since it's electronically-driven... ). Why didn't I think of that previously?

However the problem is that many retailers just use stock photographs of a Samyang 35mm and don't distinguish between mountings or versions.

Oddly this may be one of the rare occasions when it's more reliable to buy from a private seller on eBay as I can ask him to send me a photograph of the actual lens!

EOS C500 Mark II Going Higher Than 4K? [CR1]

I understand people here are much more into photography and know lots more about that than I do, so to deliver the point of 6/8K video:

1080p is 2 megapixel frames
4K is 8 megapixel frames
6K is 20 megapixel frames
8K is 34 megapixel frames

Wanting higher resolution in video is the same reason you guys want to shoot 8mp instead of 2, it's just better and bigger, giving more versatlity and better IQ all things being equal. Once you start shooting 4k for 1080p delivery, you'll never go back, it's a very very attractive concept with lots of benefits, now I don't like shooting at 1080p and deliver at the exact same resolution, especially when most cameras are not even real 1080p. It's a bit confining.

-For the same reason I and all broadcasters shoot HD for SD television
-and why we shoot 4K for 1080p delivery
-people who deliver at 4k want to shoot at 6K

8K? well that's a bit over the top. Imagine how huge of a machine and how big of a file if there was a camera that shot D810 images at 24fps for hours continuously. It will happen someday but not now, not even in 5 years, it's overkill just like 36mp D800 stills are overkill for most needs. 20 is the maximum sweet spot in my opinion. And 8 4K) is the sweet spot for 95% of needs. 2? well it's a bit too small now.

Canon now have video camera competition in the market from 400$ to 16K$, the entry level to Pro F5/Scarlet/FS7 market, what they lack now and what I believe they must be preparing for is a high end one to compete with the Alexa, Weapon and 35mm film for feature/hollywood dominance. I know for a fact that Canon's policy is dominating the cinema market and being ''the'' top end product in the industry, displacing the competitor we all know and love.

So that's where the C500 will fit, an Alexa rival.

Fortunately, Canon has already set the bar very high with the C300II, which is a
ower end model, in having 4K, 15 stops of DR, super slowmotion, industry-adored colours, effecient ProRes-like codec as well as a few extras like Dual Pixel AF and size, something nonody else have. In that sense, the C300II on paper is in fact ajrad of the alexa and a worthy rival. but as we all know, specs are not everything, and the top-end DPs know that fact, so that's what Canon should aim at with the next C500, aim at what makes the Alexa popular,

-The colour science
-DR, especially highlight rendition
-Incrideble robustness, FAR higher than C300
-Effecient ProRes codec in addition of internal ArriRaw
-High frame rates

and in case of the Alexa 65, all of that plus large format and super high resolution.

So Canon should address all of these, both the Alexa & Alexa 65 and Alexa Mini and Amira specs and versatility all in one product.

-It must be rugged, steel rugged, and size is not and issue, neither is weight.
-It must have great DR and Highlight handling, skin and overal film feel
-If they want to address the Alexa65 as well, they can go for a Full Frame sensor, a scaled up 35mm 6K sensor from the C300II, with 15 stops of DR and large image format.
-It must have an industry effecient codec, XF-AVC and XAVC are proofing to be ProRea like so that's covered.
-It must have internal Raw recording to large media.
-It must have high frame rates, at both 4K and 1080p. 4K 120p (which current C500 doea) and at least 240p at 1080p.
-To kill the Amira as well, it can be shoulder mounted with great ergonomics.

*Price does not matter here, just make it happen.Give us a 35mm rival camera like the Alexa, that's what the top end needs and wants.
