Loose ring on 70-200 2.8 IS II

Canon USA has fixed prices for repairing the low end consumer lenses, and I've heard that there are price levels set for different types of repairs for the pro lenses.

For a 50mm f/1.4, for example, you can use the canon website to get a repair ticket, pay your fee, and then ship it to them. Unless its a fatal issue, like water damage, they will fix it and return it.

I've always thought that water damage was pretty much fatal to electronics, so I was surprised when my remote Bluetooth microphone used with my hearing aid went thru the washer and the dryer last week, and is working fine. That is still hard to believe. Its nice and clean too.

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II Mentioned [CR1]

tomri said:
I guess Canon will do what they always do; give people some features which they have been holding back, such as articulated screen. At the same time, they will make the handling feel cheaper and more flimsy. With the long awaited features they will pull in new customers. With the cheaper feel they make sure those customers will want to upgrade later.

Look at the 6d today, how bad these flush and flimsy buttons are at the back. Have you compared the feel of the thumb wheel with that of a, say 40d? Do it! It is an eye opener.

That expresses the perfectly cynical view. Essentially you believe that Canon *always* does things wrong. So why do you buy Canon? Or read a Canon rumors forum?

The buttons on the 6D feel great and work great, so I have no idea what you're talking about. And I did own and heavily use the 40D (had two of them, first one was $1,300) and the 30D, 20D, 10D, 60D, 5D, 5D2, 5D3 (still use it), 1D, 1DS, 1D2, 1D2N and 1D3. I really have no complaints about the 6D buttons, especially at it's low current price.

Sigma Releases Service Notice Regarding Live View Incompatibility on Canon Rebel T6i / T6s

Buying third party lens without warranty (grey or used) looks like a big mistake. That is how I purchased 17-50 mm f2.8. Any idea why this firm ware is applicable for later production of 17-50 lens. My lens serial number starts wit 142xxxxx. Does Sigma fix firmware for grey items as well.

16-35 f4 IS overall quality

I very recently acquired the 16-35 F4 L IS and 24-70 F2.8 L ii to replacce my 17-40 F4 L and 24-105 F4 L IS.
So far I am very happy with both, though I have had few opportunities to use then so far!

In the case of the 16-35 F4 L IS I feel that the colours are very nearly as good as the 17-40. This is high praise in my books as I have yet to find a lens that renders colour as nicely as the Canon 17-40L. In every other respect the new 16-35 F4 L IS is simply a better lens, giving far less distortion and much greater resolution away from the image center. The only thing I cannot fathom with this lens is why they put IS on it! I cannot help feeling that this lens may have been even better without the extra (dead) element that the IS requires - regardless it is a fine lens.
My 24-70 F2.8 ii complements the 16-35 F4 very well and I am just loving the initial results. However, without the internal focusing, it does feel a bit untidy in comparison. Strange for a lens that costs nearly twice as much! The optics are top notch though.

Canon 400 f/2.8 II vs Sigma 200-500

Employing the Sigma is possible but lacking an overwhelming reason to go with a battery-operated off-brand lens that heavy the choice seems pretty clear.

Jim

I think that a lot of users have come to a similar conclusion. In the rare event that one is needed, just rent one. Apparently, few are renting them.

Sorry to beat a dead horse...

Interesting. I would argue the 1D4 has at least the DR of the 5D3. I personally for sports would go with a 1D4 out of the choices he listed. I think it would be easier to fill the frame and in day time the 1D4 has just as much DR as the 5D3. That's just my opinion.

Edit: I just looked at sensorgen and actually the 1D4 has better DR than the 5D3 across the ISO range. I guess the real issue here is cropping or not. I always felt the 1D4's sensor was absolutely phenomenal.

C300mk.ii 15 stop of DR using similar concept as Arri Alexis ? / Dual_iso?

Seems like in absence of exmor type on die AD's, other manufacturers are using something similar in concept to the Dual_iso that ML has. i.e. use 2 different gain paths, one low sensitivity, one high sensitivity, then combining both signals thereby enhancing DR. I was just looking at the Alexis sales brochure and it seems to use a similar idea to get 14+ stops in it's video sensors:

It's a pity the reviewer didn't notice the pretty bad coma (a known problem for the Canon 24mm L) which is a
major problem for astrophotography. Check the gull-shaped stars in this image...

It seem the only option is the Rokinon.

I see your point. I'm actually looking forward to reviewing some of the repackaged Rokinon/Samyang lenses with the auto aperture and focus confirm chips.

The new Tamron 15-30mm is even better.

I meant the 24mm f/1.4 not the 14mm ;) even if the coma is good the tamron would still be a f/2.8 lens
