100-400mm: Canon vs Tamron vs Sigma

AlanF said:
It requires the dedicated Tamron extender and I haven't bought it - the Canon won't fit and the Sigma doesn't AF. By the way, I have done more BIF testing and the Canon 100-400mm II is in a different league, whatever Dustin writes. I aim at birds and not a running dog.

I see... I had rather the Kenko extender in mind. It is compatible with virtually every EF lens and has a good optical quality. Have you used Sigma 100-400 with an extender? Can you recommend it?
As you indicated a good synergy with M5, I might as well get a M100 to use as an 1.6x extender.

I was also sceptical about Dustin's AF comparison with Canon 100-400. But for my usage (80% landscape + 20% some moving object like animals or people) Tamron would be definitely sufficient. Sigma has obviously more problems with AF, as you indicated and from different reviews. Better IS and AF is the reason I favour the Tamron, even if IQ is a bit worse than Sigma.

Will Canon ever make 1 inch DPAF sensor?

Can someone explain to me what a 1" sensor is? Is that the diagonal measurement? Or something else? Is there a good website that explains all this stuff?

Thanks

Rich

I Googled your question and this site came up first with the explanation.

https://www.quora.com/Why-are-1-inch-camera-sensors-13-2mm-x-8-8mm-so-labelled-In-what-respect-do-they-measure-an-inch

Thanks. So a FF camera has a 3" sensor. Seems strange that this term would still be used today. Probably used to confuse the consumer to think that they sensor is much larger than it really is.

Time stamp in 6DII files are 1 hour apart from JPG to CR2

Leandro said:
I went out to take some shots today. I turned off GPS and also daylight saving time (as it ended in Brazil two weeks ago). My CR2 and JPG files show the same time stamp now.

I still say to let Canon know. It indicates bag in their file saving code. As a programmer, I would appreciate the observations......

Tokina to Announce Opera 50mm f/1.4 FF

Well done Tokina.
I'm surprised Canon haven't updated their 50mm range.
I would have thought it would have been one of the easier lens to improve upon.
50mm is such a classic focal length.
I'd have thought Canon would want their to be recognised best in class.
I've had the Canon 1.8 , 1.4 and currently I have the 1.2.
I've enjoyed all three.
I'm actually very happy with the 1.2
I seem to be in a minority here but I find it a very good lens and much easier to use than the 85mm 1.2.
I find it sharp.

AF setup help needed

Did just that but with a 5DmkIV. AF Case 1 with default settings and initial point autoselect works well enough for me. Straight on at 15-20km/h can get tricky at f/1.4 and 3m distance but for me a third in focus is acceptable at such circumstances. In really heavy snowfall, lower tracking sensitivity. Dunno which af case that needs though.

Thanks!

Auto initial? So you use all 61 points with color/face tracking? I’ve tried that also, no luck. I’m thinking this might be one of those scenarios were nothing works, because usually it’s very very good...

Sorry, wrong wording. I've got spot af as default on shutter half press with af-on doing all-point auto select based on subject at the point that was active. If I can't keep up with motion and keep a single point on target, I have a single button for my thumb to make the camera do Magic for me.

Ah, that makes sense, I use af on for af, but use the *-button for a different AF set up.

Any way to re-map aperture control in aperture priority mode?

Most of the time I shoot in manual mode, but often, especially in a situation with a good amount of light, I change over to aperture priority, and let the camera figure out the best shutter speed. However, I don't like that aperture priority mode changes the aperture control from being on the back dial of the camera to the wheel on the top. It's confusing to have the aperture be controlled by different dials depending on the mode. Is there a way to re-map the rear dial to be the aperture in Av? Looks like all of the custom controls only affect what these dials do in M mode. I guess I could map it so that the wheel on the top is always aperture, but I like having that one be shutter speed whenever I am in manual. This is on a 5D4 by the way. Thanks.

Pentax new full-frame camera. Interesting.

It's not really a 'new' camera. It's the exact same as the first version, just with the logic board upgraded to be slightly more power- and heat-efficient, so the processor (AF operation and IBIS operation) can be pushed a little further. It's basically just one step away from what Fuji does to their cameras with free firmware updates.

Other than that, it's the exact same system as before. They're even offering existing owners the option to send in their 'mark I' and have the logic board swapped out for a nominal fee, turning them into mark IIs.

Here's the Canon EOS 4000D, A New Entry Level DSLR

Hector1970 said:
Looks like a reheated version of a Canon APS-C from 10 years ago but all plastic including the mount.
If it’s really cheap it might be a handy backup camera.
Maybe Canon hope it will get people into DSLRs and get addicted to buying lens.
Like a drug dealer giving free samples.
I think it will cannibalize their lower end cameras.
The margins will be so low I couldn’t see it worthwhile unless they see Massive volume in high populated countries that aren’t buying DSLRs.

The biggest thing keeping me from using t2i as a backup camera after I got into xxD bodies is the battery. It's such a pain having another charger and another battery type.

Canon U.S.A. Launches a New Family of Laser and Lamp LCOS Projectors and Interchangeable Lenses

AvTvM said:
Canon ... 2018 ... no 4k ... lol :P

If you use it for photo viewing: yes, that's bad.

If I look at the prices for the LASER models and the specialty lenses I think: It is for professional (1) presentations in large halls (conferences, teaching @ universities) and (2) for display stands profiting from the extended lifetimes at high brightness.
4k isn't that important for these applications, less pixels, less pixels which could be malfunction.

So it is not mainly intended for your living room (or mine) and @ 11 000 $ it much more expensive compared to an 4k OLED screen with 60 inches which is great for photo viewing. I own a 3year old 500 EUR/$ 4k TV with a conventional LED backlit panel and just that is very cool for viewing images @ 3240 x 2160 pixel resolution.

Flashpoint (Godox) R2 and Canon Speedlights

JPAZ said:
First, thanks!

Second, please consider all you can do (even with someone's help or with Post-it notes), CanonFanBoy. You are way more knowledgeable about this than I am and have skills that I only hope to achieve someday. Keep posting!

At this point, I have a 430 EX RT iii and a 430 Ex ii. I am "retiring" my Phottix Stratos ii trigger and receiver. The Flashpoint R2 trigger (not the pro version) and receiver works seemingly well and I can have one flash on top of the trigger hotshoe with another flash off camera. So, I just ordered another R2 receiver (and more Eneloops ;) ) to get both lights off camera. If I ever want to add more lighting, seems I can get a Flashpoint RT device or any device that can connect to another R2 receiver. Am I correct in this idea?

If I had it to do over again I would go all Streaklight 360s (Big power compared to speedlights and less money overall by far). It takes, I believe, 5-6 Canon 600's to equal 1 Streaklight 360 power wise. Canon makes very nice flash though and that new 470 is going to be killer.

You are correct and thank you. :)

Industry News: Ricoh announces the PENTAX K-1 Mark II Full-Frame DSLR

It will be interesting to see how DPReview ranks this compared to the D850 and the A7R III (you know they'll never compare it to Canon. In their minds Canon is like a 3rd party camera manufacturer (not the 800lb Gorilla that they are). Nikon and Sony are where it's at man - they have all the "sexy-tech" not like those old dinosaurs that Canon produces. (Yes, I'm being tongue-in-cheek.)

Full Specifications for the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC

traveller said:
If the new Tamron is about the same weight, focuses quickly and accurately, is sharper and cheaper, would that sway your decision?

Not that I'm in the market for an f/4 (as I own an f/2.8 IS II), but:

For me to buy a third party lens, what I'm looking for is:

- Optical performance needs to be close to Canon
- AF speed and consistency are important
- Build quality is a consideration
- Weight isn't a huge factor, but it should be close to Canon
- Price needs to be 2/3 the Canon's MIR price

Specifically for f/4 zooms:

- Price should be about half of the f/2.8 zooms (this applies to Canon f/4's too)

So, for me to consider Tamron/Sigma, the price needs to be around $700 or less compared to Canon ($1050), or about $650 compared to f/2.8 third party's ($1300).

But practically speaking, $800 is just too close to $1050. I'd just spend the extra $250 and get the Canon. Generally speaking (not specific to these lenses), this is why:

- Future body compatibility is guaranteed, with built-in lens profiles
- Canon's service has been very good to me
- Canon's L lenses' build quality has been exceptional for me in terms of ruggedness/reliability
- I like a lot of small, non-top-line aspects of Canon L lenses like MF ring, switches, lens collars, etc.
- On SOME third party lenses, I've really hated some minor aspects, like the cruel joke that is the Sigma 150-600 MF ring
- Resale value on Canon gear is consitently much, much higher
- I guess, some CPS qualifying points could be a factor

That's not to say I wouldn't buy third party. I have about a half dozen third party lenses, and I'm moderately happy with most of them; but to get me there, the price is a big deal -- mostly it incentivizes me to buy a lens I wouldn't otherwise buy.

Canon EOS M50 & Canon Speedlite 470EX AI To Be Announced February 26, 2018 in Most Places

This looks like an awesome camera and is what I have expected Canon to come out with in a mirrorless body, except where is the 30+ Fps burst mode????

Seems to be there, sort of, in the form of 4K footage frame grabbing. Of course, 8Mpix JPEG only... But the real burst mode (10fps without Servo AF) is likely throughput limited.

It may show up later in the full specs, but quite often with mirrorless cameras there is a very fast burst rate at reduced resolution.... but time will tell. Even without it, this seems like killer crop camera!
