In general 300mm and 400mm f2.8s are for sports first, wildlife 2nd.

500, 600, 800 are for wildlife first, and sports/other applications 2nd.

I have a 400mm f2.8 IS (the first one) and a 300mm f4, plus both vIII extenders. This gets me a wide range of telephoto options, from 300mm to 1280 (equiv. on the 7D)

The 600mm f4 II looks astonishing, but waaaay past my budjet.

I actually like the 300/2.8 II for wildlife, especially deer and other ungulates. During this time of year especially, the males seem pretty docile. With as little as tan pants and a tan/light greenish camo shirt, they seem fearless enough to let me get well within 300mm range...even as close as 100mm range for a head shot. The weight and balance of the 300mm is a lot better, IMO, for your average walk-around wildlife photography than the 600mm (not that the 600mm isn't a great lens for that as well when you have more stationary or dangerous wildlife subjects.)

I agree, and you can stalk football players, baseball players, track and field athletes as well. You don't even have to worry about camo. :) 300mm easier to carry than 600mm? Now that's just crazy.

POLL: How far will the street price of the 6d drop?

CR00 said:
I'm glad I bought my 6D brand new with 24-105L at the end of June from an authorized dealer when Canon had their instant rebate. The dealer also had 15% off plus $50 store credit that weekend which brought the price down to ~$1,990.00. I think it's all about timing and be ready to buy when you see the right price.

Wow, that's a terrific deal! I was an early 6D buyer, so paid $100 more for just the body... I knew I could save several hundred dollars by waiting 6 months or so, but was anxious to get a full format camera before the Christmas holidays.

Masai Mara Safari -September

Hi I am regular visitor of the Mara. As said above, beware the max weight of luggages allowed (15 kgs). Everything in excess and you'll pay extra taxes and/or you'll have to leave some things at Wilson airport. Also use Soft luggages : easier to put in smaller airplanes.
I would go for 70-200 2.8 !
Every focal lengths are needed : from 16 to 800 ! Animals might be from very close to very far !
Beanbags are usually available in such camps, but you may come with an empty one and they'll fill it.

Noise in 1DsMkIII

My shutter count is about 30-40,000 and noise seems to be increasing in my images...what used to be noise at ISO 800 is now present at ISO 400.
Just spoke to customer service and was told that it could be because I PP in LR4 and to try using DPP, have not done that yet.

Two questions: what in LR might be aggravating the noise and, if it isn't LR caused, what may cause the problem?

Is This the New Sigma 24-70 f2.0? 2014 Can't Come Fast Enough!

I stumbled across this photo posted by CanonWatch. What do you all think? Does it look legit? I don't know much about Sigma other than they're completely changing the lens game and I'll probably pounce on this lens like a fat kid on a cupcake! ;)

Autographer? Practical Applications?

.
"Practical" applications seem hard to come up with. Since there is no control over the "decisive moment," let's say, you'd never be sure what you're getting.

Based on my experience this past weekend, I'd say a funeral may be a useful application. The funeral is the one instance where I've never been able to bring myself to pull out the camera and take pictures. I can't intrude on such emotions, yet the images are as valid and necessary as any other family function. We have pictures of every other family event, yet when someone dies all we have is a tombstone -- and usually no picture of that.

On a lighter not, maybe the drunks would find it a useful replacement for lost memory! "Damn, I was hittin' on that dog!!"

Question about TDP's sample crops

Dianoda said:
Something else to consider - the 60D/7D sensors have stronger AA filters than the newer 18MP sensors (beginning with the T4i), so the 60D output looks softer at the pixel level compared to the T4i/T5i/SL1/EOS M. The output from the newer APS-C bodies does not look all that different from the FF cameras as far as pixel level detail in ISO 100 test shots is concerned, have a look:

5DIII vs. EOS M:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=458&Camera=792&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=3&LensComp=458&CameraComp=812&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=3

EOS M vs 60D:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=458&Camera=812&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=3&LensComp=458&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=3

I wonder if it is the lack of split greens on the CFA? I know that the 7D originally suffered from major and weird "mazing" artifacts until they came out with new debayer algorithms for it but they also every so slightly made the output softer (comparing pre-fix to post fix RAW converters output from it).

6d for underwater photography?

I used my 6D underwater a few days ago, and I have to say I loved it. I had my 20D click out mid shoot with my backup being 5 miles away so I rigged my 6D to work inside my Aqautica A20 housing using a 20-35L 2.8 with an 8" dome port.

Albeit not one of the keepers here's an image accidentally taken with my 6D underwater

Canon please show APS-C's some LOVE!!!

preppyak said:
Or you could just do what everyone else is doing and buy from third party vendors that provide better quality lenses. Tokina offers the best wide angle with their new 11-16, and its still cheaper than Canons. Tamron and Sigma now offer better quality APS-C lenses (including an 18-35 f/1.8 ), and both have significantly longer warranties (Sigma 4 years, Tamron 6 years). Moreover, Tamron's service is a guaranteed 3-day turnaround.

Totally agree here! On an APS-C sensor, the Sigma 18-35 f/1.4 seems to be fantastic! So don't wait for Canon, go have a look at what third parties are offering now.

Gear Advice foe and awesome Greece trip

When I was in Greece in 2009 I tried to travel light and ended up with:

17-40 with C-Pol
24-105
70-200 2.8 IS
50 1.8

On reviewing the 4000+ images taken over 3 weeks the above list is also the frequency with which each lens was used. If I had to do it again I would leave the 70-200 at home. 70% of the shots were with the 17-40, 25% with the 24-105. I had one shot of an Altar in a Byzantine church using available light that the 50 was absolutely necessary for but with the improvements in sensors these days the only reason in my mind for a fast prime would be for subject isolation.

Greece is definitely wide-angle territory.

I left the 300lb Manfrotto tripod at home and brought a GorillaPod SLR Zoom which I used for some pannos usually wrapped around railings.

Travel in Greece involves lots of walking and climbing in 40+ degree weather so keeping things as light as possible will help and having space in your camera bag for an insulated water bottle will serve you well. I took a Crumpler six million dollar home as I find it looks less like a camera bag.

Make sure your gear is insured and registered with customs in your country of origin. The last is a PITA in Canada but you do end up with a nice list of the Serial Numbers of your gear to provide to Police should the worst happen

Vernon Trent on Equipment

I don't know much about Vernon Trent, but I came across an interesting quote:

..amateurs worry about equipment,
professionals worry about money,
masters worry about light,
I just take pictures...
- Vernon Trent

Apparently he's part of the "fine art" crowd and is known for nudes.

Looks like he and I agree -- I'm just taking pictures!

And posting in a hardware enthusiast forum ... ;)

There are hex to string converters on the net... ;)

And if you knew binary History you'd understand that I got your inside joke and knew about Mr. Leibnitz. Google is our friend.
