R5C Bug in New firmware 1.0.4.1 June 2023

PSA: Bug in new R5C firmware for photography shooters. Found by Vitali Beliak.

Shooting photos in one of the C1 C2 C3 custom modes it can get confused and think it has the R5 pixel shift feature resulting in huge file sizes. Have tried it and can confirm. Doesn’t really effect me as I never use the C1 ect modes but could be annoying to some.

“Just switch it into one of custom modes. Turn off camera, then turn it back on. The pixel shift should be on at this point. I tried resetting settings, but it didn't help.” - Vitali Beliak

Recommended RF Lenses to take on an African Safari

Does South Africa Airways or Airlinks weigh carry on luggage?

Hi Everyone,

I am traveling to South Africa this summer and two of my connecting flights are on South Africa Airways or Airlinks. While both of my carryons meet the dimensional requirements because they contain photography gear both are over the 8 kg weight limit.

I am flying business class which allows for two pieces of carry on luggage each weighing 8 kg/ea for a total of 16 kg (35 lb.) combined mass.

My first carry-on is a backpack that contains all essentials (toiletries, sat phone, medication, chargers, one day of clothes) along with two camera bodies and a small lens. Total weight is 11 kg (24 lbs).

My second carry-on is a International size wheel case that only contains additional clothes and a nylon gym sack contain my one larger lens (RF 100-300 mm f2.8). Total weight is 10 kg (22 lbs). The weight of the lens with the nylon gym sack is 7 lbs.

WCS I think I can bring the backpack at 24 lbs plus the nylon gym sack at 7 lbs onto the plane with a combined weight of 31 lbs, which is still less than the 35 lb maximum.

Do others here agree? Any advice for the traveling photographer?

Thank you,

John

Canon is looking to partner with a smartphone manufacturer

Absolutely. The Nokia brand and Canon brand together would be awesome. By the way, maybe Canon will license the Nokia brand once the license with HMD Global expires? Or they could by HMD Global completely. (See my nick if you want to know how I feel about these scenarios.)
PowerShot Microsoft Duo.
Weird cameras so may as well make a weird phone.

Sadly no mention of the EL-5 or ST-E10

SIGMA and Tamron discontinue most of their DSLR lenses

Glad I managed to get the 24-70 2.8 from Tamron. Works perfectly with the RP
I'm with ya. I got my G2 some years ago, for maybe $900.. on ebay from an Aussy seller, so maybe no USA warranty. Never needed it, of course. But, I use it less now as I got the RF 24-105 f/4 with my R5. Both have superb QC and optics.

Green cast in photos taken on a Canan R5 at high ISO

You didn't mention it, but I consider that almost Moiré-like noise pattern as more distracting and image damaging than that greenish color cast. For this the culrprit is Lightroom's Lens Correction or more precisely it's Distortion Slider. I doubt this will also affect your color cast, but it's worth a try.

Have you tried the White Balance Tint Slider to at least weaken the greenish hue?
OK, I will look at the base CR3 without lens correction for any difference in noise when I disable lens correction in my LR import. I have set that as default...

Thanks.

Sigma 14mm f1.4 Art lens

Sigma is rounding out its f1.4 Art lenses with a 14mm f1.4 the worlds fastest 14mm. Canon has so far not produced any RF f1.4L lenses unlike the EF series and we are denied lenses like the Sigma Art series. A huge hole still in Canon RF line up that after six years of RF glass is unacceptable.
RF mount was announced in September 2018, so almost 5 years ago, not 6. And there is only a hole in the RF lineup if one chooses to ignore that EF lenses with f/1.4 apertures are for sale today that will work perfectly well on the RF mount.

Is a Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS on the way? [CR1]

I am still waiting patiently for this rumer to come true.
I am using basically three lenses on my R5: RF 24-105 mm, RF 15-35 mm, and RF 100-500. The 24-105 stays on my camera body most of the time. I recently dropped the camera with the 24-105 attached at the front, the result was not a totally disaster, the lens is still working but I can feel the lens needs serious repair job. My options will be (1) use my EF to RF adapter and my old EF 24-105, or, (2) get a new RF 24-105. So if the f/2.8L is coming out, I will like to get make my option #3.

Canon to announce the EOS R100 and RF 28mm f/2.8 STM

The hood for the RF 28/2.8? I almost always buy the hood for non-L lenses, the exceptions are lenses like the EF 40/2.8 and M22/2. I skip the clear filter for those lenses as well. The flat, screw-on hoods do not seem like they'd be very effective at reducing flare and they don't offer significant protection, either. What the clear filter and/or hood do accomplish is to increase the thickness of what is supposed to be a thin lens. I will be ordering the RF 28/2.8 at some point, but I don't plan on getting the hood. I didn't preorder because I'll be away when it starts shipping, and for this lens I don't think there will be a backorder situation after it launches.
Pretty much the same here, I don’t plan on getting the hood, I never use one on the 22/2.

Firmware update (V1.8.1) bricked my R5 - $558 to repair.

Happy ending: After a second call, Canon agreed to reimburse for the repair and has refunded.
It still amazes me that companies want to have it both ways: have the customer to the upgrade and charge to clean up after their product shits itself. If your product can self-destruct, don't let customers perform that action or void the warranty. Not some limbo in between where they prey on the timid.
