i have been very impressed with the build of the 100 f2.8L macro which is plastic too it makes it light weight too compared to the metal nikon 105 f2.8 micro its much lighter

its just the metal lenses feel more high class probably more of a perception of better quality than a reality possibly

So I was able to verify that sharpening was deactivated completely (along with everything else). Still getting the black halo ...

+1, yeah I still don't get this. how can having the option to swivel the screen out be a bad thing? I don't understand the "pro bodies don't have it" reason. so what if pro bodies haven't had this feature yet.

It's all about the megatronic receptors.

If they could engineer the positive luminators to activate on first current, the pinocchio pixelators could bypass the bayer filter. Then the RGB filter arrays would work directly off the incoming photons.

One of these days perhaps! I know those Canon engineers are all over this one.

Obviously, I have no idea. My unknowledgeable guess would have to do with speed of powering up the sensor.

I also pre-ordered an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II the first day that B&H would accept pre-orders, and mine also shipped on 9/10/2012 by UPS ground, for delivery in Texas on 9/13/2012. HOORAY!! (I was beginning to think I might not live long enought to actually receive it...)

+1...it was a right decision for me.

I had very little gear with me compared to normal. Most of my lenses were rented out and my partner was using the 5D mkIII with 24-70 and 70-200 for the photos. This left me with the 7D and 2x 60Ds. The 60Ds had each a 18-55 kit lens on them for ceremony. The 7D had tokina 11-16 on it for ceremony. for the rest of the night I switched between my nifty 50mm 1.8, the tokina 11-16, and 70-200 since my partner was no longer using it. I had a dinky home made slider so about 10% of the shots from it were usable due to a wobble it has once you get going. Also, I had no glidecam with me to I did the usual "glide cam" shots handheld. Again, this is not at all my ideal setup and the majority of my gear was all rented out for the weekend.

Fanks. @2.8 not a lot of difference but at f4, the prime is better.

The zoom has better vignette control wider.

Prime sharper over all but zoom holds up respectably... I reckon you can get great shots with either one... but if you use TC's, the Prime would be a tad sharper stopped slightly.

Not the glass, but the D800 vs 5d3, the D800 and D3x has had much bemoaned complaints regarding a green color shift in the colors... Of course to the untrained eye, you may not even notice it, but side by side, you can see the color shift... and this supposedly is after custom white balance, etc...

Isn't Canon Canada a subsidiary of Canon USA? With $$ going to a parent corporation in the end - whats the big difference? I doubt this is about corporate structure of Canon's operations. This is more about ripping Canadian customers off by protecting this high mark up market. Other than that it is really dumb not to provide a true international warranty to such an "internations" product. People travel and lots of preople with pro gear travel, so not being protected by warranty internationally is simply not caring about customers by the manufacturer. End of rant.

Yes, I was thinking about calling Canon but then spoke to a few folks and it looks like there is no point in that. Regardless of what they tell me over the phone, this may change when it comes down to a real life situation. All this is coming from a misleading and confusing language of Canon's warranty card. Thats the reason i was curious about real life experience with this...

I thought I would give an update to this saga.

I ended up going for the 200mm f/2.00 lens and I got it for a lower price than I had expected. Leaving some pennies in the bank. Now I just have to wait for Fedex to do their stuff (and the guy to leave it at the depot as promised today) Sadly there seems to be a dearth of demo and hire functions in Finland compared to the UK and USA (lucky devils!).

Motivation was, after reviewing a lot of my past year's photographs, a lot of portraits and some internal shooting where the light was not so great (but the distance further than the 85mm f:1.8 I have. Plus in the winter I have some plans to photograph indoor sport. It was a tough call, but I tipped it to the 200. I will look at selling the Sigma 150-500 and some other bits and then to pick up a 300 or 400 f/2.8 when a great deal comes along and the pennies permit.

So thanks ! Come on Fedex! With my luck it will arrive on Friday in southern Finland and then they sit on it until Monday

With my high-precision screen on my 5DMKII, I meter +2/3 stop and exposure is perfect.

The bodies go for $800 and up.
Summicron 50 F/2 close focus lens is worth the most, probably $1000+ depending upon condition.

I looked at a 1957 model with the close focus "eyes", a 35mm Summaron and a 50 Summicron.
As Charlie mentions, you really need to get it serviced and appraised.
It could be very expensive junk.

the 5D3 has an additional fluorine coating intended to provide additional incremental improvement, compared to the 5D2 The comment is buried deep inside the review, so here is the text (emphasis mine):

"A clean sensor is a strong contributor to good image quality. The 5D III inherits the 5D II's Integrated Cleaning System with the addition of a dust-avoiding fluorine coating. I have read in Canon documentation that the 5D III's self-cleaning sensor system incorporates a more efficient ultrasonic vibration but I'm not certain that this is correct. It was perhaps copied in from 1D X documentation...I have changed lenses on my 5D III a huge number of times and have not needed to clean the sensor since I blew the single factory dust bunny out when the camera first arrived."

How about going closer than 1:1? Do either work well with extension tubes?

102 AF points with only 11 cross looks like more of a headline grabber to me and I have my doubts it'll be the preffered tool of action photographers with Sony's weakenss on long lenses and the SLT mirror robbing 2/3 of a stop of light.
