Patent: Canon patents RF 200mm f/2L IS, RF 300mm f/2.8L IS and RF 500mm f/4L IS optical formulas

Canon is obviously working on RF mount versions of the legendary EF 200mm f/2L IS, EF 300mm f/2.8L IS and EF 500mm f/4L IS lenses. I expect the 300mm and 500mm lenses to be announced in late 2022 or in 2023. As for an RF 200mm f/2L IS, maybe further down the road as it’s a pretty niche lens.

Is Canon actually going to launch RF-S lenses alongside the Canon EOS R7?

We have now heard from a couple of trustworthy sources that Canon plans to launch two RF-S lenses alongside the Canon EOS R7 this year.
At this time, we do not know what the lenses will be, but we have had a Canon RF 18-45mm f/4-5.6 IS STM on our roadmap for a long time, could this be an RF-S lens?
Canon Rumors in the past has been of the opinion that RF-S lenses don’t make much sense, but we can’t be right all of the time. If there are some interesting designs and form factors, they could be a good addition to the RF mount lineup.
More to come…

Canon’s Imaging Unit Grew, Profits Shrunk on Costs, ‘Various Measures’ Coming

In news that will hearten Canon shooters, the firm indicated in its quarterly results that parts availability is improving. In news that probably won’t hearten Canon shooters, the company said it expected double-digit profit growth in future quarters “as negative impact of cost increase is absorbed through various measures.” Of course, one such measure could be charging $17,000 for a lens.
Increased costs were the largest factor in shrinking Canon’s Q1 profits. Despite increasing revenue by about 6 percent for the Imaging division, profits in that sector shrunk by 26 percent. Similar dynamics appeared in most other divisions.
From Canon
Demand, mainly coming from professionals and advanced amateurs, continues to be strong as full-frame mirrorless cameras released by each company stimulate the market. As a result, we expect the 2022 market to grow by 5% compared to last year to 5.65 million units, which also...

The Canon EOS “R7” has been pushed to Q4 of 2022

*Update* We have confirmed that the camera will be called the “EOS R7” and it will come this year, Q4 being most likely.
There were rumors that a Canon EOS “R7” (We’re calling it that for now) would have been announced by now, in a ‘normal’ world anyway.
We have been told that the Canon EOS R7 is now scheduled for a Q4 of 2022 announcement. This tends to fall in line with the usual late August/Early September announcements that Canon is known for.
For the moment, specifications are scarce and we’re unable to confirm what we do know at this time. Let’s hope that changes in the near future.

Canon Wins Patent for Its ‘Shoulda Coulda’ Supertelephoto Designs

Remember back to the good old days of March 2021, when a glint of hope surfaced showing Canon was working on a set of completely new supertelephoto designs? Canon Rumors wrote then of a patent application surfacing that showed big, beautiful, crazy-aberration-free lenses ranging from a 200mm f/2 through to an 800mm f/5.6.
Well, that patent application has now been registered as an official Japanese patent. Each lens showed adapted designs, using similar concepts, rather than throwing in teleconverting groups to double the focal length.

Everything else, in the meantime, went a little sideways. Canon recently opted to announce the release of differently-designed lenses, employing magnification lens element groups on the...

Canon launches an 'Edit Van'

Canon India launched an 'edit van' yesterday in India. It is quite a cool van. And let this be a wake-up call to people who think that India is not important to Canon. Canon guy said this is the first of it's kind and they chose to launch it in India for the volume of work India does. Here are some links I made for you all to see. It was fun. I was the first one in..
I have added my photo, just for fun... LOL

Canon announces new firmware for the Canon EOS C300 Mark III and Canon EOS C500 Mark II

MELVILLE, NY, April 21, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today a firmware update for the Canon EOS C300 Mark III and EOS C500 Mark II digital cinema cameras. The new firmware will enable these cameras to be Frame.io Camera to Cloud (C2C) compatible devices. This cutting edge workflow can save valuable time, allowing a collaborative cloud-based workflow in a variety of production environments from scripted motion picture and television production to reality TV, documentary, commercial, and more.

Transferring footage from camera, from on set or location, into the post-production workflow traditionally requires backing up files to a hard drive and carrying or shipping the drives to another location to be ingested for post. C2C workflow sends secure high-quality, low-bandwidth H.264 proxies, 4K 10bit 4:2:2 H.265 (HEVC) files and uncompressed audio files with matching timecode and filenames to the Frame.io cloud platform. Frame.io® is now an...

Canon to finally announce a fast RF 35mm lens by Q3 of 2022

The long-rumoured Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM may finally be hitting dealers later in Q3 of 2022. This lens has been talked about ad-nauseam for quite some time now, and it has been on our roadmap since day 1.
We have been told that the lens is in the hands of testers and marketing folks and recently appeared in an internal dealer roadmap.
There still seems to be a bit of back and forth as to whether it’s an f/1.2 or an f/1.4, but at this point, I don’t think it’ll matter too much. Canon will sell as many as they can make for a long while.

Industry News: Nikon plans to have 50+ Z-mount lenses by 2025

Canon recently let it be known that they plan to release 32 RF mount lenses by 2026, which seems to be a very aggressive approach to the system. Not to be outdone, but Nikon has now come out and said that they plan to have 50+ Z mount lenses by 2025 in their latest investor relations release.
More than that, Nikon also plans to put more resources into their video features for content creators. Nikon’s place in this segment has always been thought of as weaker than offerings from Canon and Sony,  Whether that’s fair or not is up for debate.
Nikon’s current plan

Concentrate management resources in high value-added products and mirrorless cameras(Meet expectations of professionals and hobbyists and raise ASP 20%)
Bolster the Z mount system by expanding the lens lineup (50+ lenses and a 2+ lens attach rate)...

Is Bowens still in business? Any alternative to XMT500?

I'm considering buying my first flesh heads and I'm very interested in battery powered Bowens XMT500 Twin head kit. But I wonder if this is the right choice. Even though Bowens seems to be UK company, their products are sold only by Wex and they are constantly "awaiting stock". So are they so popular that they are sold out immediately or is the company going out of business?

Is there any other battery powered system worth considering instead? I'm not a Pro and I don't make money through photography. I'm looking for something I could use without main for both portraits and product photography.

Will Canon make a 4k only r5c type of camera?

The R5C is an amazing camera, technologically speaking.
But if we look at the FX3, for the gorilla filmmakers, it is much smaller and outputs the same awesome 4k...

Again the R5C is amazing but that massive fan in the back kills me! All because of 8K and that massive sensor...Which I would never use.
I don't want to go to Sony with the FX3 but I also don't want a chunky Canon that I am paying more for for the 8k I wont use..

If anyone happens to have information on future developments please let me know!
How awesome would it be if Canon made another R5 with just 4k and wasn't as expensive and didn't have a chunky fan and didn't over heat?
The FX3 has a fan but it is significantly thinner.

The FX3 really is a better camera if you're only shooting 4k, but I can't go to Sony. Also what's with the screen sizes..

My canon 6D has a larger screen than both of them and when filming in 1080p I get to see more of my image vs filming in 4k on either screens, With the FX3 and R5C they have to fit the ratio on the screen but it gets so small.. You'd think there would be a work around..

Why am I paying close to $5k with the R5C to update my system for a smaller screen, larger files, larger body and 8k I wont use.... all just for 4k?
FX3's screen isn't great either but that doesn't mean I or any other consumer should settle.. However it seems like most people have and continue to let these companies get away with this...

Some people may opt for a monitor but the simplicity of having it all in one body is great. +1 for flippy screens (Canon & Sony)

Maybe I should get some nice Cine lenses for my 6D for $5k instead.. It would look just as good in 1080p.

Think about it.. If everyone buys their 4k cameras with that 8K sensor, Canon will continue to make "almost perfect" cameras, continually lumping the market into the 8k category and other things WE/THEY don't really need..Canon never perfected a 4K camera without crop right?

Sony did it's users right with the FX3. Much bang for the BUCK. It's a GREAT 4k camera.
Where is Canon's? Sure the R5C also has GREAT 4k even slightly better than the FX3 due to oversampling but look at the cost in terms of price, battery power, size...
You can do it Canon! I believe in you!

Anyone experiencing battery drain in their R6

I'm only using my camera sporadically at the moment, and for the last few months I've noticed the battery seems to drain during the periods I'm not using it. I'll fully charge the battery, take a couple of shots, then when I come back to the camera two weeks later, the battery is either very low, or completely dead. I always ensure it's switched off before I put it in it's bag. Issue happens on multiple batteries. Camera is updated to latest firmware

I'm pretty sure it wasn't like this until a few months ago. Anyone else experienced similar issues?
