Tether - lose connection, why?

I tether with my R5 in Lightroom. After different time the camera loses the connection to the notebook. On the camera display is then often "Saving" and a number. I can turn off the camera, but it does not turn off. Only when I remove the tether cable, the camera can be switched off again. Then I connect it again and can connect to Lightroom again.

It's not like I shoot a lot of photos in a row and the notebook can't keep up.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Canon R5 Heatsink Overheating Mod Service

While searching the inter-webs I stumbled upon this cool hack. Had no idea that someone actually started a service based on DIY Perks findings! From the people that have tested this solution, they have been reporting 2-3x the performance out the R5.

Where Have all the Camera Stores Gone????

In a few recent CR posts, I have mentioned that I have no Specialty Retail Camera Stores within 100 miles of my home. Sadly, that is true. When I perform a Google search looking for a Camera Store, at least a half a dozen store names come up but when I call, their phones are disconnected or when I drive by to check them out, they are no longer there. Once thriving local camera stores, now nothing but a memory. I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses when and where I can. In the photographic field, this is no longer possible where I live.

In the late 80's, I lived in the Atlanta area and there were several large, local camera stores where I could go check out the latest photo gear offerings from most Mfgs. Wolf Camera on 14th St and Showcase Photo and Video on Cheshire Bridge road were the two local mainstays. Both are now history but more on that in a moment. Somewhere around 1991-92, I walked into Showcase, sauntered up to the counter, patiently waited for a sales clerk, since the floor was slammed with potential customers and glanced at the glass cases behind the sales counter, where I saw some of the new white L lenses Canon was offering. Once a clerk was available, I inquired about the EF 300mm F4L lens that was begging to be touched. He attached the lens to a Canon A2e body, turned it on and handed it to me. I was unfamiliar with the new AF EF mounts, so when I depressed the shutter, not hearing the lens focus caused me to hand the camera back to the clerk and inform him it wasn't working. He picked up the camera, pointed it at a car outside the showroom and pressed the shutter button. It both focused and fired away, sans film in camera, of course. He smiled that knowing smile but without making fun of me, he proceeded to hand the camera back to me, briefly explaining what an ultrasonic lens was and told me to depress the shutter and point the lens at different subjects. I couldn't believe how quiet this new Canon Ultrasonic lens was. It not only focused, I was just overwhelmed with its ultra quiet autofocus and so, I walked out of Showcase that day with my very first Canon Camera, an A2e (eye controlled focus) and that ever so quiet EF300mm F4L lens. The rest is history and I have been a Canon Shooter ever since. I bought a myriad of Canon gear from this store and Wolf's over the next several years. Sadly, Wolf's filed bankruptcy several yrs ago and in 2017, Showcase, the last surviving full service, camera store there, liquidated all of its 40 yrs of inventory and closed its doors for good. But why, you might ask??

John Williams, the long time General Mgr at Showcase, shared his reasons for the store closing with PetaPixel. While this is an older article, I think many of you will find it enlightening, as it sheds some light on the daily workings of a camera store and it's interaction(s) with both customers and Manufacturers. Much of the information he provided (minus perhaps the sales tax collection explanation) is still relevant in today's photographic market, shedding much insight into the marketing strategies local stores use and the very slim profit margins, set and enforced by the various Mfgs. and how this affects store profitability, or lack thereof. Here is a link to the Peta Pixel article that explains why they closed.

https://petapixel.com/2017/03/02/another-big-camera-store-fails-many-closing/

In the fall of 2020, the Fed Gov't ruled that out of state shipments could be taxed by the states where the products were being shipped to, somewhat leveling the playing field advantage out of state on line vendors had enjoyed for years. For stores like Showcase, it was too little, too late.

Update: Thx to all my fellow CR members, who took the time to give their input and insight into this thread. Much appreciated. Congratulations to those who still have a local camera store they can visit. They are a dying breed in this era of on line shopping. Sadly, the moral here is that price trumps service. It appears we always want the lowest price and are prepared to go wherever we can find it, the exception being when we just have to have it, supply is limited and we are willing to pay whatever to have it right now.

CFexpress buying tips

I am looking for advice on a few items for my new Canon R5. I am mostly shooting stills with my telephoto lens. I have been using my existing ScanDisk SD cards but read that the CFExpress is essential in read/write speed for both still and/or video. Looking for advice on which SD and CFexpress cards to buy for ample results. Since I don’t intend to shoot video any time soon, I am mostly interested in a product to support my photography. What is the ideal read/write speed for photography only? Thanks in advance.

A new EOS R system camera is coming in January [CR2]

The Canon EOS R3 will be announced in the next 10 days or so, along with two affordable RF mount lenses, the RF 16mm f/2.8 STM/USM (AF motor is unknown at this time), and the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-7.1 IS USM compact telephoto zoom.
As always with rumors sites, my readers want to know what’s coming next, almost immediately.
I now know that an EOS R system camera is coming in January, and it may not be the EOS R5c. The EOS R5c has been rumored for quite some time, but I’m not sure whether or not it will be considered a Cinema EOS camera body from sources.
The new camera in January may be a bit controversial for some Canon shooters according to the source.
“January is going to bring a camera that will annoy a lot of the fanboys” – according to a good source.
I’ll be honest, I enjoy a nice...

The Canon EOS Ra has been discontinued

This one shouldn’t come as a shock, but production of the Canon EOS Ra has ceased and it has been officially discontinued according to a couple of sources. One source has said production of the Canon EOS R has also ended, but that inventory will exist for quite some time.
I have no idea how many of these astro-focused cameras Canon sells, but after releasing a few of them, it must be worth doing. If Canon does another astrophotography camera, I would think it would be an EOS R5a in a couple of years.

Automatic Hyperfocal Menu Selection Options

I should preface this post by stating that I am not an engineer, so I do not know what it would entail to offer a menu selection option, whereby one could assign automatic hyperfocal distance selection to a button or dial on some future R series body, based on the focal range of the lens and aperture you have set on it. Canon has some brilliant engineers among their work force, so if this can be done and anyone could offer it, they certainly could. Sure, I can use the technique of focusing 1/3 into the frame on a landscape shot, as I often do or carry a hyperfocal distance full frame aperture chart, showing hyperfocal distance and dividing by 2 to check focus area or try focusing on infinity, then check for proper focus on LCD screen, etc. etc. But, it sure would be nice if the camera could just make its best guess for me in advance based on my aperture setting used at the time. Sure would save me a lot of time. Can any of our erudite engineers out there chime in on this?? I know there are more than a few of you out there(I've read some of your CR posts) that are no doubt, quite capable of disassembling an R5/6 blindfolded, while you check out the mother board for the pure heck of it, maybe add a heat sink or two while your at it, then casually put it back together better than you found it, right after you finished modifying Lightroom's latest software upgrades to better complement the program based on your personal needs for same. Then, hopefully, all I would have to do, perhaps, would be a slight tweak to the recommended hyperfocal setting when necessary. If I can perform this by using the proper formula on my calculator, why can't the camera, with its built in sophisticated computer curcuitry, just do it for me?

Canon is apparently increasing MSRP on some of their products

By now, I'm guessing many of you have seen CPW's bulletin today about Canon's price increases. For those that have not, here's the link to CPW's information. https://www.cpricewatch.com/blog/20...ices-today-on-the-5d-mark-iv-and-7-rf-lenses/. I have to admit this kind of caught me off guard and, as some of our Brit friends would say, I found this leaving me gobsmacked.

Here’s a full list of what will be announced with the Canon EOS R3 this month

The Canon EOS R3 and a couple of lenses will be announced this month. I have reported that the date of announcement will be September 14, 2021, but I haven’t confirmed that date as of yet.

BEWARE: RF 14-35 f/4L IS USM

At this time, the RF 14-35 is largely unusable when shooting RAW and using either Lightroom, Adobe Camera RAW, or Capture One. I'm eager to get this lens profile from Canon ASAP, but as it stands right now, this lens may not usable if you shoot RAW and use the aforementioned software to edit your photos. As someone that is continually working with this gear daily, I just shot test shots with the lens around our lakes in preparation for a large commercial real estate job on Thursday. I knew about the distortion of the lens, but didn't realize Canon and Adobe had not released the lens profiles yet...so once imported into Lightroom, you're met with nearly fisheye distortion and black corners.

I have taken test chart images and have concluded that the RF 24-105 f/4-7.1 is the closest profile for wide angle shots.

In the interim, the profile for the RF 24-105 f/4-7.1...but it's not 100% perfect as it only works for 14-18mm range - especially not suggested for critical architectural work. Keep in-camera lens optimization for chromatic aberration ON, as this looks to be baking itself into the RAW file and is VERY good...the lens is easily corrected for CA.

That said, this lens looks incredible in DPP where correction is fully supported. I'm not afraid of digital correction, but if you are...this is obviously not the lens for you.

ALSO: This does not impact video when you manually enable profile correction. So, for now, I will only be able to use this lens for video work. Hopefully we see the lens supported within the next 30 days.

Canon will announce the RF 16mm f/2.8 and RF 100-400mm next

Two more lenses from our long-standing RF lens roadmap are up next from Canon. There has been further confirmation from Nokishita that Canon will announce an RF 16mm f/2.8 and an RF 100-400mm telephoto zoom lens. Neither lens will be an L lens and should be quite affordable.
I’m not sure at this time if the 16mm f/2.8 will be a pancake lens, as I continue to receive that question a lot.
More to come…

Is Mirrorless a Giant Con?

We are about two weeks out from the R3 announcement and it seems like a good time to reflect on the current state of digital cameras.

I've been quite candid that I fully intend to switch over completely to mirrorless with the R3, taking a hit on my 1Dx III for the sake of having a single lens system and reducing the amount of equipment I have to lug around. But the following quote from @GMCPhotographics, raises questions that I have been wrestling with and which I think warrants further discussion.

...There are are rumours that Canon only introduced the RF mount to extract premium prices in a declining market to replace lost revenues from the declining market...
I also recall another forum participant (apologies for not remembering who it was) saying they felt like we were all beta testers for the R5. A sentiment I can identify with given the frequency of lockups that I've experienced.

To put it bluntly, I wonder if Canon's alluring little mirrorless lap dance will leave us all with much lighter wallets but unsatisfied.

I like the R5. I find many of its features brilliant, but I ask myself, if I had the choice between the R5 and a 5DV with a 45mp sensor, animal eye autofocus, and the feature improvements of the 1DX III, would I have chosen that over the R5. The answer is, I would have gone for the DSLR. There simply aren't enough features/benefits that are intrinsic to mirrorless to make it more desirable in my view than DSLRs.

I recognize the risks of comparing real cameras to hypothetical cameras, but if you look at what the 1DX III offers, it's pretty easy to see what could have been added to a 5DV. Similarly, for me, the major benefits of the RF lens line seems to be in adding a few new lenses and focal lengths and reducing weight. But, when comparting EF and RF apples to apples it's pretty evident that many of those perceived benefits would have been incorporated into the next generation of EF lenses.

Now, credit to Canon, they've played the game very well and no one is forcing me to keep stuffing dollar bills into their hands, but I do have regrets for what could have been.

Mushrooms And Fungi Of Any Kind

I always like the time of the year when you can smell the scent, the aroma in the forest that they are there ,even if you haven't seen them.
And I like taking pictures of mushrooms and I thought it was about time to give them a dedicated thread, knowing that there are already a lot of posts in forest or macro threads and so on.
But I found that most of my mushroom pictures are not taken with my macro. And that's why started this thread.
I will probably repost some older mushroom pictures here, but only because I think they are worth it.
Please add yours, too.

I think I'll start with this beautiful fly agaric:
