R5+RF100-500 vs D850+500 PF

A shout out in the dark since both setups are calling out to me and there is only £1000 between them in Nikon's favour(£6000 for Nikon, £7000+memory card and spare battery for Canon)

So if I am shooting at 500mm almost exclusively(A 70-200 on my Z6 will solve any closer subjects), which of these is giving the best image or how comparable are they. To be frank, if Canon had a prime RF 500mm of any kind I would have already made my mind up. But till such time I can afford ether set up, but the Nikon one is looking more appealing since its a prime so on the off chance someone here has both I would be delighted to hear some feedback.

I do have a 500mm PF turning up on Wednesday on a rental which I'll use on my Nikon Z6. I do not yet seem to be able to find anyone renting out a 100-500 yet and even at that the rental on the R5 will likely be high given that the 5dIV is close to £200 for 5 days.

Amazing Eye Autofocus on the new Canon EOS R5

I did a model shoot last Wednesday and am attaching two images to illustrate how well the R5 can focus on the eye. One shot is the full frame image and the second is a Lightroom crop of the girl's left eye. I was blown away by the sharpness of her eye lashes! I have to downsize the images so they will post her but you can see the higher resolution shots on my Flickr page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lylemariam/albums/72157715917201663/with/50331097192/

Shot with available light at ISO 400, f8, and 250th of a second. I normally shoot at ISO 100 but we were losing the light.VegasCameraGuy_IMG_0660-25%.jpg

R5 Video Rig

Just wanted to share an image of how I’ve kitted out an R5 for video duty. So far I’ve used it on four shoots each a full day, using the external recorder without overheating (running firmware 1.0).

I did get the temperature warning at one point when I had to shoot some 120p internal but got what I needed before any issue arose. I filmed a 40+ minute interview in the 5.1k oversampled crop mode at 24p with no warnings.

Averaged about 3 LP-E6N batteries each day.

The RF 24-70 is a fantastic video lens with minimal focus breathing and outstanding stabilization with the aid of the IBIS. Rock steady handheld shots.

Mattebox is a Bright Tangerine Pola+ with Schneider RHOdium NDs.

Eye detect doesn't work in Servo mode on my R5

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong but when I switch from Single Shot to Servo mode then I lose the ability to Eye Detect? In Single Shot, it grabs the eye immediately but if I change no other setting except switch to Servo, Eye detect disappears. There is no little square around the eye? Switch back to Single shot and eye detect suddenly reappears? Anyone have any idea what I've got set wrong? I'm set to AF+Eye (the left most selection) with Eye detect enabled and set to people.

Interview: Canon addresses overheating concerns, workarounds and the Cripple Hammer

Johnnie Behiri from CineD.com had the chance to interview Katsuyuki Nagai-san, Product Management Director of Image Communication Business at Canon Europe and flat out asked about the marketing and perception that both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 aren’t true hybrid cameras.
Johnnie also touches on hacks as a workaround for the overheating and cooldown times, as well as the notion Canon purposely crippled these cameras to protect the Cinema EOS line.
A snippet from the interview:
Johnnie – CineD: To some people, it seemed as if Canon was trying to protect their professional EOS camera line by restricting recording times. That might have caused some trust issues between potential customers and the company. Is there anything you would like to highlight in order to reassure people that whatever was done, was...

Lensrentals.com investigates the heat emission from the Canon EOS R5

By Roger Cicala
Published September 10, 2020
Lots and lots of people are talking about Canon R5 heat cut-offs. The discussions range from technical discussions about heat generation, cooling methods, and firmware protocols to strident conspiracy theories.
I only know a little bit about heat:

Electronics give off heat when they’re working.
Heat fries chicken, which is good, and fries electronics, which is bad.
You can get rid of heat by conduction (flowing through nearby materials), convection (circulating through gas or fluids), and radiation (which mostly occurs at high temperatures). We know from the teardown that the R5 is tightly sealed, so we have to figure that convection doesn’t play much of a role.

As a repair and QA oriented person, I hate bricking cameras. So I’m less interested in coaxing the camera into working hotter (see point 2) and more interested in how the heat gets out. When we did the teardown of the R5 we saw some metal heat sink / transfer plates that
would...

Yay, an R5 and lenses turn up for testing

A welcome parcel from Canon this morning, with this lot
RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM TS-E 50mm f/2.8L MACRO EF-EOS R Adapter with Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter EOS R5 RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM
I've unfortunately only got it a couple of weeks, but want to test it for stills use, especially with tilt/shift lenses (17/24/50)

Raw compression R5

Not yet having the camera to do some tests I have a question about the compression of the RAW file during the bursts.
From the manual of R5 it says this
RAW, C-RAW 14 bit (14-bit with Mechanical shutter and Electronic 1st Curtain, 13-bit A/D conversion with H+ mode, 12-bit A/D conversion with Electronic shutter, Canon original RAW 3rd edition)
from the way it is written it would seem that only if you shoot in uncompressed RAW format there is a decrease of the bit depth
Canon original RAW 3rd edition
but not in CRAW am i wrong?

Ps: sorry for my bad english but i'm Italian :D

Eos R6, or wait for the Eos R Mk2

Hello Everyone,

First post on here (although I've had an account for some time apparently).

I'm finding myself with a slight dilemma... I currently own a Rebel T4i with a few lenses, and have been looking at an upgrade for around three years. It seems every time Canon release a new camera, something falls critically short of my wishlist, and I'm left wondering when I'll be making the right decision.

When the EOS R6 was announced, even though, once I added the 24-105 F4L lens, and EF > RF adapter, it was considerably more than my intended budget, I thought 'screw it, I'm just gonna jump in, otherwise it'll never happen, so I went to my local camera store and put a deposit down.

Now I've spent the last week wondering if I've made the right choice... is 20mp enough of an upgrade from my current 18, do I need more than 20mp, is 12 fps too much, are Canon eventually gonna release some reasonably priced RF lenses, am i spending too much money considering photography is just a hobby... the internal chatter continues!

Then today while browsing various sites, I saw rumours released at the end of last year mentioning the EOS R Mk2, with similar specs to the EOS R.

I'm now wondering if I should just hold off that little bit longer in hope that the R Mk2 might come with the F4L as a package, will be more suitable for my needs, and hopefully around $1000(cdn) less than my current purchase.

Shooting wise, I shoot everything from Landscape, animals, macro, long exposure, abstract etc, and upgrade-wise, I'm ideally looking for:

- FF
- At least 10mp jump from my current 18,
- 8fps,
- decent AF (Doesn't have to be DPAF2, but a worthy improvement over my current 9 point with no focus options)
- IBIS would be great but not critical

What are your thoughts on this, any speculation on when the R Mk2 will be announced?

Please help me calm my brain before the R6 shows up...

Elephant in the room, Almost no available EF-RF adapter

I cannot escape to see nobody complaining about the lack of availability of the EF-RF adapter. I wonder if Canon is deliberately creating this situation to sell more RF lens or it is a production problem. But I find this a real problem for attaching my canon 8-15mm which have no equivalent in the RF world. People who ordered the R5 and R6 without RF lens will be not be able to use it for awhile.
