Date stamps all messed up on R5?

Now this is weird. I just verified I have the time and date set on my R5. When I look at the card (an SD type II) on my computer, the times of the files are all over the map, anyuwhere from August 31 to January 1 of next year. (The EXIF data seems to be correct.)

For example, one image shows, in my file manager's properties dialog: modified 2020-11-07 15:04:32, (this is consistent with the actual time displayed in the file manager listing), accesed 1979-12-30 17:00:00, but the EXIF says 2020:08:07 22:04:23 (which makes good sense, I was trying to photograph the milky way for the first time and making rookie mistakes).

Worse, I by default work in L+RAW. That file I just mentioned is a JPG. The corresponding Raw file shows 2020-09-04 14:03:28 (modified) and 1979-12-30 17:00:00 accessed; it only agrees with the JPG on the accessed time. There's no relationship at all btween the two files' modified times. (And my OS is too dumb to look in a CR3 for EXIF info.)

These should be getting set by the camera as it writes the files, yet something totally wonky is going on here. Given that part of my workflow is to look at the file listing in the OS to put it in a date bin, this is going to be very aggravating to me.

[edit: just verified that the first pics I took the day I got the camera have the correct dates on them in the Operating System "directory/folder" listings.]

EOS R5 disassembly

Yes, someone already disassebled the R5. The video is in a strange chinese website but hey this is all we got :ROFLMAO:

Looks like the heat problems come from the Digic X processor that has a thin piece of metal acting as a heat sink. The heat from the digic can't reach the camera body, since there is a circuit board (the small green one) between the camera body and the heat sink.

The digic can dissipate some heat to the large heat sink in the middle of the camera, but the heat has to go through the main circuit board. Also, the thermal pad under the main black pcb seems too small.

If someone is brave enough, adding a silicone thermal pad between the green circuit board and the camera body should help. Another thicker thermal pad can go over the CF slot (be careful to not block the mechanism) to dissipate some heat to the camera body

R5 Workflow concerns

Got my R5 with 24-104 lens, love it! My first mirroless camera. After 5D3 since 2012 I finally upgraded. Auto focus is so good (people and animals). Anyhow, I got FTP transfer working (with my Mac Mini running an older version of Mac OS as newer versions do not support ftp anymore). The transfer was pretty fast and not having to take out the card or tethering the camera to the computer is really great. Jpeg images I tested out of the camera look great. But I prefer RAW.
I know Lightroom does not yet support the RAW images from the R5 so we cannot compare, but DPP4 takes ~1m15s seconds to convert a RAW image to JPEG! This was on a Macbook Pro 2.8GHz Quad core i7 with plenty of RAM. Looking at the CPU load, it is CPU bound (cores are pretty much pegged at 100%). There is a pre-release DNG converter from Adobe I hear, I have not tried it yet. Anyone tried that, how does it perform in terms of speed?

I will not be shooting 8K video, but I tried it anyway. It takes over 50GB for about 2 minutes of video and it is painfully slow to transfer from the camera using the USB C. I did not try the FTP over 5G wifi, but I cannot imagine how it would be better. It seems like it will be a while before we have options for a less painfull workflow and of course upgrading your computer and storage is looming. I am not upgrading until ARM version of the Macbook pro is out (may be end of the year).

R5 - Star trails, heat and battery life

All,

I am a "future" R5 photographer (hoping to get one once the dust settles* after selling some gear). Curious to get any feedback on one of my planned shots. Were I to do a 1 1/2 or 2 hour exposure with long exposure NR active (say "star trails"), the camera would be running for 3 or 4 hours. Has anyone had a chance to try anything like this and if so, is the battery life adequate (or would I need to get us the USB C power or a grip with extra batteries) and would the R5 get too hot? I am hoping someone tries this out and gives us all some feedback. Thanks in advance.

* is a bad pun on a photography site ;)

Not Ransomware according to Canon today (8/7/20202)

This is posted today...

Important user update concerning image.canon
We apologize to users of our cloud platform “image.canon” for inconvenience.

By this notice, we report the result of our investigation so far made on the incident.

Canon offers services to its users worldwide on our website "image.canon," consisting of: (a) short-term storage where users upload and store images for up to 30 days; and (b) long-term storage where users store images of up to 10GB/user with no specific expiration date.

When Canon switched over to a new version of the software to control these services on July 30, the code to control the short-term storage operated on both of the short-term storage and the long-term storage functions, causing the loss of some images stored for more than 30 days.

By August 4, we identified the code causing the incident, and corrected it. We found no unauthorized access to ”image.canon”. The incident caused no leakage of images.

There is no technical measure to restore lost video images. Still images can be restored, but not with original resolutions. We offer our deepest apologies to affected uses.

R5 - Best Custom Setup options for Buttons and Dials

I know the best custom settings are very user specific. (What each person likes...) It also depends on User Needs/Cases.

I would like to see how people customize their buttons and dials. Please state your main use for the camera. This can be for more than just the R5, since many of the customization options are the same for EOS 5D and 7D series, R series, etc.

For example, I never use the AE lock button. What are my best options to assign to theat button for wildlife/ BIF?

thanks!

Only 2 minutes of HQ 4k video after 164 images

This is not good considering the 164 shots were taken over 2 hours. Taking one 2 minute video would basically brick the camera for 10-15 minutes before you can use it again.

Richard's EOS R5 photo experience

Days after conducting these video tests, I went shooting at a local nature reserve using the Canon 800mm F11 USM IS lens. It was another hot day, for Seattle (27°C / 81°F).

In just under two hours I shot 164 images, all in CRAW, some as parts of short bursts. I then switched to video mode to capture some 4K HQ footage and was confronted by 04:00 minute limit, despite plenty of card capacity.

The overheat warning displayed immediately and, after shooting three sub-10-second clips the camera said it would only shoot for another 02:00 minutes.

rf 15-35MM F2.8L issue? NEED ADVICE!

So I was out last night making some IBIS stills tests and had on my RF 15-35mm lens. One of the photos I took shows some weird issues I'd like some opinions on:

This is a crop of the image, original was 15mm so this isn't edge of frame stuff. The focal point is somewhere above the right car, on the text in the window - looks fine. But then scan to the left and look at the writing in the window over there. Blurry - why? It's on the same plane as the writing I focused on. Same question on the 'for lease' sign.

0R9A0205small1.jpg

But also - a dead giveaway, look at the rear wheel on the car in the middle of the frame - looks round. Then look at the front wheel on the car immediately behind it. Oval:

full size for reference:

I know lenses this wide have some issues as you go out from the middle, but these seem excessive? Thoughts?

EF vs RF 70-200 f2.8L

Hello I was wondering what people's experience with the EF II/III vs RF 70-200 F2.8L especially on the newer R5 body. Is the AF any better in the RF? Any noticeable IS difference? I already have the EF II version, but with my R5 wondering if it is worth the upgrade or not. I dont care about the weight difference, really focus speed, IQ are my key drivers. Thank you.

Canon EOS R5 records 4 hours of 4KHQ 30p to an external recorder, with a couple of simple tweaks

Wayne from No Life Digital has posted a video to his YouTube channel showing how he got the Canon EOS R5 to record 4 hours of 4KHQ 30p video to an Atomos Ninja V before the camera overheated.
Simply by removing the memory cards from the camera while recording externally lead to a big boost in recording time. This seems like a pretty surprising outcome for something so simple. Is there some kind of software limitation in the camera?
A dummy battery was also used in this test.
Testing methodology:
The Canon R5 does not seem to overheat, externally, if you don’t have any cards in the camera. In this video I show (with as much proof as I can), how I’m able to record up to 4 hours in 4KHQ 30fps, 10-bit CLOG, with IBIS and DPAF all on, with no issues like the blackout or screen off issue myself and Gerald were having.
The setup here is as follows – HDMI out of Canon R5, into Atomos, out of...

R5 colour science and skin tones.

After watching quite a bit of video footage and seeing images shot with the R5, I've noticed a difference in the colour science and skin tone rendering when compared to the EOS R or 5D Mark IV. I have always loved the colours I've gotten out of the EOS R and 5D Mark IV, so it was a little disheartening to see Canon decided to make changes to the R5's colour science. Skin tones and neutrals now seem to have a magenta cast.. similar to what the 5D Mark II and Mark III had.

If anyone who owns the camera has some more examples of skin tone rendering with the R5 I would love to see them!

Guess the Canon R5 ISO...

Let's play a little game. (the answer is below but no cheating!)

CHALLENGE: Look through these image edits and guess the ISO shot on the EOS R5. (*details above each image*)

EDIT: These were converted into DNG files and saved as JPEG in Lightroom. Shot roughly 2/3-stop under and pushed +.43EV and +40 in the shadows. Luminance noise reduction set to 65. That's literally it, no tricks.

CAMERA SETTINGS: RF 24-105 f/4L IS USM at 50mm. 1/320 f/7.1 ISO 25,600

TAKE AWAY: This is an absolutely ridiculous performance to say the least. There was a lot of concern that the new R5 sensor wouldn't be able to handle itself very well in low light, but I can say without question that ISO 25,600 is usable on this camera for quality, deliverable work for a client. Combined with the IBIS, this camera is something to be reckoned with as a low-light photography tool. I could add contrast to the file and bring the blacks down a bit and it would look even more incredible...this is ISO 25,600!?!?

IMPORTANT NOTES: This image was shot using mechanical shutter in single shot mode where it retains the full 14-bit files. The camera can only shoot 14-bit in the regular high-speed mode which is only 6fps with mechanical shutter. I noticed a slightly worse performance using electronic first curtain and, under this lighting, it was slightly darker. This is not reflective of the performance the camera will get in 12fps mode (13-bit) or using fully electronic shutter (12-bit). I think I would only want to shoot weddings at 6fps with AF this reliable anyway, so I am not too concerned. I can do another test with better lighting using the three different shutter modes.

***I may perform this same test again tomorrow against the EOS R and the 1DX Mark II...I'm very curious to see how it stands up...in the meantime, I'm going to dust my bar for more flattering images. LOL**

A 1:1 crop after resampling the image down to the resolution of the EOS R's 30mp to demonstrate how it improves after downsampling.

This is the full global image of the entire bar scene. Going to dust it tomorrow before my wife kills me! LOL

R5/R6 Revision -B Manuals

Happen to stumble on this today... which is actually handy since the main sites are down. I just mentioned the R5/R6, but other products info can be found there as well.

Starting point...

I was looking mostly at the R5 Manual and noticed at least 1 table update. Figured others might want to look at them too.

Help need to pick an R5 or R6

I purchased the RP in Jan 2020. It was and is a good camera. The 2 shortcomings are the AF for a running puppy is pathetic and the 4k is cropped with no Dpaf. I was so excited for the R6 which is like a mini 1dX and 4k uncropped. I am now dissapointed that everyone seems to keep saying the R5 is better. I was hoping to have it last for all my family photo/video needs for the next 5 yrs till my kids graduate HS. I have now sood my RP so no camera to wait till more reviews come out. My ? Is should I move to the R for slightly better af tracking and 1080p video or get the R6/R5?
