Canon RF 24-240 Lens Opinions?

Ive been looking at the R5 and was curious if anyone had experience with the 24-240. I shoot run and gun style and dont really like switching lenses, but the 24-105 F4 is almost maxed out on the reach for shooting from in the boat.

Of course im using the 24-105 on a Zcam with Metabones, so im not even sure ill be able to use the 24-240 on this body, but if i switch to the R5 it could be an option.

EOS R5 or R6 Versus 5DMIV for Airshow,Sports and Wildlife thoughts .

What are your thoughts on going to a R5 or R6 from a 5DMkIV. I photograph Aircraft at Airshows mostly. I have a 5DMkIV and 7DMk2 with Sigma 150-600mm Sport lens. I do not do Video at all so don't worry about 8K video side of the camera. I have lots of EF-S lenses and a few Full frame lenses. My goal is to get extremely sharp pictures of airplanes flying at 300mph going in every direction from far away. Can you use EF-S or full frame lenses with adapters ? Is the R5 45Mp sensor that much better than the 20Mps sensor of the R6 for Still photo's and does it justify the extra cost ? I hear the battery life is only 250 shots which seems very low since I shoot a around a thousand shots per day at a big airshow and use two batteries per day on most occasions. The Cost of the new RF lenses concerns me. I dont want to spend $2500 for an 85mm lens. I need a wide angle up thru 600 mm for ground shots up to far away planes and I cant spend $20,000 on lenses no matter how good. What are your thoughts ?

Canon EOS R5 Video + External Recorder = Significant Improvement

Some answers for you about the Canon R5:
1. Quality is the same internal vs external up to 4K60, whether HQ or not.
2. External doesn't overheat up to 4K60 (non-HQ) for at least 3 hours.
3. External does overheat at 4KHQ oversampled 24 & 30p after 75 mins.
4. There's no 4KHQ 60p.

Not sure how to directly embed twitter posts. But "Gerald Undone" has a lot of good insight.

If Canon were to bundle a recorder in a "Video Creator" package, and not stuff-up the pricing, they can turn this train around.

LF Comparison of RF 28-70 f2 on R5 vs R

Looking for a review showcasing the differences of shooting the RF 28-70 f2 on a R5 vs R (bonus if R6, but really after the R5).

The closest one I could find was this, but it didn't really compare shooting with the glass on one body vs the other (it was more a simple lens review)... figured someone might get a benefit from it so sharing it...

I held off on getting this lens or the RF 24-70 f2.8 due to indecision (choice being F vs IS)... however all that changes with IBIS. Also curious as to what the increased megapixel has to offer w/ this lens.

Feel free to move this over to the lens subforum if it's better off there...

Patent: Active cooling adapter for the RF mount

Canon News posted about a patent recently about actively cooling an RF mount camera with an adapter. In this patent, it’s a cooling EF to RF adapter.
In  Japan Patent Application 2019-186871 You can see the adapter and the flow of air from the adapter.
Canon News says:
The camera does have to be properly built to handle heat transfer from the sensor to the lens mount, but this is certainly something Canon could accomplish.  One of the engineering problems that even Sony and others have is how to cool a sensor that is not fixed in place because of IBIS.  Flexible heat transfer materials made of polymer do exist, so it’s possible to cool the sensor directly even with IBIS...

These half-baked "quick thoughts" reviews…

… are really getting on my nerves. I'm not asking for folks to have full reviews, but really basic stuff is being omitted. Ragging bit on the Northrups here but they are by no means the only ones:

- "I couldn't recover this highlight." OK, was that RAW, HEIF or JPG? If it was RAW... how did you process it? I haven't seen any reviewer with access to raw conversion tools yet. Does the R5 have highlight priority? Was it on?
- "I had trouble tracking a bird once I started shooting" That's really important to know. But can she regularly do that with an OVF? How does it compare to other mirrorless Z7/A9/XT4? What drive mode? Fro was doing some great indoor sports shooting with the 1DX3 in live view—why would the R6 be different?
- "Battery only lasted an hour" while driving a 500mm lens with a 2x extender, presumably with IS on. How many shots? How does that compare to a 5D4? A7 series? I've found even a 100-400 will chew up batteries on my 5D4 with heavy IS, and it starts to slow down with drained batteries.

Not asking for super controlled/detailed reviews at this point, but adding in those pieces of context would take like 20 seconds of script time. Really don't want this to be a dig at Tony/Chelsea who are doing solid work actually getting the camera into the field—just wish they'd provide some basic contextual information.

Tilta shows off a cooling module for the Canon EOS R5

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about the heat issues with the Canon EOS R5 when recording high-resolution 4K or 8K video.
I haven’t touched the camera, so I’m not jumping in with an opinion. However, what I have noticed on social media is very different results and conclusions about using the EOS R5 as a video camera regarding heat. There have been those that have said it is unusable for videography work, and there are others that have said they haven’t had an issue and have loved shooting with it.
Knowing social media, it’s probably somewhere in the middle.
Now we have the company Tilta that is showing off a fan that quickly mounts to the rear Canon EOS R5 when the screen is flipped out. As you can see by the images below, it’s pretty and may look like it it’ll be an effective solution, but I...

The-Digital-Picture adds electronic shutter comparison for R5

Just noticed this in Bryan's R5 review so far at The-Digital-Picture: he added in a electronic vs mechanical shutter comparison: https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-R5.aspx

Scroll down to the ceiling fan photo.

There is slight visible distortion there, but considering the speed most ceiling fans are spinning, this looks pretty exciting. I was already willing to deal with some very extreme and painful rolling shutter on the EOS R in silent mode when I was shooting very slow, quiet action settings where the shutter noise would cause more problems, so maybe this means that the silent shutter will have even more use in general assignment work. Still will probably go with mechanical shutter on extreme action, but will do my own tests when the R5 arrives.

Armando Ferreira: Testing out the NEW Canon EOS R5 in a real world production environment.

One of my favourite YouTubers Armando Ferreira has his hands on both the Canon EOS R6 and Canon EOS R5 and he is working with Kondor Blue to do some real-world production testing of the Canon EOS R5.
The video displayed here re-creates the iconic courtroom scene in A Few Good Men, as well as some 8K run and gun footage. If you can do so, be sure to switch your YouTube stream to 8K.

upto 12fps

Hi

I found this https://faq.canon.jp/app/answers/detail/a_id/101699#1
It explains how the R5 can only do 12fps in some situations.
Its not in english but google translate can translate it in chrome.

One of the tables looks like it is saying that it can only do 12fps mechanical if the battery is 60% or more.
I also read some limits in the specs talking about mode a, b, c. This could be the same as green, white and white blinking for the continuous shooting icon. So the next step down looks like it is 9.2 fps. That is not too bad. But then I would really expect to get that until the battery is near empty?

Does anyone know any more about this? I was really wanting this camera to maybe replace my 7D II and 5Ds.
So continuous shooting is something I require to work. Also a bit worried about battery life. Hope to get 1000 or more shots from two batteries.

R6 vs. 1DX3 ISO Question

Folks;

Based on what I have read here on CR, the new R6 uses essentially the same sensor as the 1DX3. Yet the 1DX3 ISO (per the Canon website) is 102,400, expandable to 819,200. The R6 is 102,400, expandable to 'only' 204,800.

Any thoughts on why the 2 stop difference?

(my experience with the 5D3 suggests that the last two stops are not terribly useful - I find 25,600 useable, but 51,200 and 102,400 on the 5D3 too noisy...which might suggest that I would find 51,200 on the R6 useable, but perhaps 204,800 would be useable on the 1DX3, hence the question)

Thank you!

Whats the possibility or likely hood of either a cinema upgrade to the R5 or a cinema version with cooling.

The camera is getting slammed by many for the heating issues and Canon expected this. This release is very Un-Canon-like, they were always known for reliability and won't add features if they dont work properly or with compromises in operation. A lot of canon users want a small body for serious video work but with high quality features. Who thinks that Canon might have another version in the near future that sacrifices the weather sealing for cooler internals. It makes sense to me to do that. I call it the EOS R5C. Canon you better pay me if you use this name.

What are people seeing for offers on selling their EOS R's

Trying to determine if I will keep mine as a 2nd body or trade in for lenses when my R5 comes. Looks like Adorama is selling for $1,600 - $1,700 depending on condition and B&H doesn't have any, so would I figure on approx. $1,200 if I went one of those two places? Yet it looks like they're selling them new for about the same, though Adorama out of stock.
