New adapters coming for the RF mount [CR2]

I previously mentioned that we’d be getting new adapters in 2020 for the RF mount, but I wasn’t sure which adapters were coming next.
I have been told the following adapters will be coming this year.

PL to RF with Cooke/i
EF-Cinema Lock to RF
Speedbooster (Perhaps for 4K recording on the EOS R)

There are usually announcements from Canon and others at the end of August or early September, so I suspect we’ll see these announced some time around then, along with new RF lenses.

RF 24-105 f4 on full frame v EF-S 17-55 2.8 on crop?

Hi guys. I shoot a lot of video with a 90D (80D before that and 70D before that) with a 17-55 f2.8.

I’m excited by the R6 and wondered how using it with an RF 24-105 f4 compares to what I’m used to, specifically with presenter talking to camera type stuff. I‘ve never used a full frame before and know the range matches but was wondering how the depth of field would compare?

Will being closer to the subject and the larger sensor offset losing a stop of light? It’s surprisingly hard to find mid shot portraits taken at 24m to get an idea. Lol.

IBIS is likely coming to the EOS M lineup [CR2]

I have been having some conversations with a source about the EOS M lineup and its future. Canon is apparently behind the system for the long haul by everything the source has been told.
I asked specifically if IBIS is something we’ll see in future EOS M cameras. The source has told me that Canon will likely be bringing IBIS to a camera or two in the EOS M lineup.
I was not told which upcoming EOS M camera would be getting IBIS, but I think the EOS M50 Mark II would be a good place to start. There’s also a chance that IBIS will be held for the rumored flagship EOS M camera body.

Industry News: AP Photographers will only shoot with Sony gear going forward

In a pretty stunning move, one of the world’s largest news agencies has signed an exclusive agreement with Sony to use only their cameras for photojournalist work. This has usually been dominated by Canon and Nikon gear.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but I imagine the AP did get a pretty good deal on the switch. Both Canon and Nikon have aggressively pursued professional news agencies in the past decades, and this looks to be similar in nature.
From the Associated Press:
Sony Electronics Inc., a global leader in imaging, and The Associated Press, the trusted global news organization, announced today a new collaboration that will make Sony the exclusive imaging products and support provider for AP news photographers and video journalists around the world.
With journalists in nearly 250 locations in 100 countries, AP provides factual, compelling journalism in all formats, including 3,000 photos and 200 videos each day. The news agency has a distinguished history of...

Full-resolution sample images from the EOS R5, EOS R6, and the new lenses

A member of the Fred Miranda Forums did some digging on Canon Japan’s web site and dug up full resolution sample images from the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6, and all of the new lenses.
The sample images are a mix of shots using the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6, RF 600mm f/11 IS STM, RF 800mm f/11 IS STM and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM along with current RF lenses such as the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and others.

EVF comparison

How do the EVF in different EOS cameras compare?

I can read the tech spec, but I am interested in hands-on experience, usability and subjective impressions.

My only mirrorless camera with an EVF is the M5. I cannot say that I like its EVF. Contrast and saturation seem off. The brightness is not sufficient when used in bright sunlight.

I had a look through the R and RP in a camera store. They look better, but I couldn't take them out into sunlight.

What is your subjective experience with EVFs? Anyone here who can compare some of M5 - M50 - R - RP - R5 - R6? Other brands as well?

Do you need to turn off IBIS when on a tripod, like you do with lens stabilization?

Hi all,

Just curious....I believe I understand it that when you have had EOS cameras in the past, locked down on a tripod, either for video or stills, it was best to turn OFF the images stabilization on the lens if it has it.

So, does this also mean for the coming R5/R6...that you should turn off IBIS too when it is locked on a tripod?

If so, would be a bit of a PITA, since on most lenses there is a quick switch to hit, but I'd guess with IBIS you have to dig into the menu system to turn it off/on....unless maybe you mapped it custom to an external button?

Thoughts?

Issue with IDX III and 11-24mm and Sigma 14mm

It's perhaps an usual combination of equipment but I was wondering if anyone has a 1 DX III and a Canon 11-24mm and/or a Sigma 14mm 1.8.
I've never had this before with a Canon camera.
The 11-24mm doesn't click into place when I put it on unless I really force it.
The Sigma too is needs a little push to click into place.
No other lens I've tried on the 1DX III has any issue at all.
I know tolerances can be fine but I thought it unusual. Anyone else experience it?

There is another RF mount camera coming in 2020 [CR2]

I have been told by a pretty reliable source that Canon will announce another RF mount camera in 2020. What exactly the camera is, I was not privy to at this time.
I do not believe it’s an EOS R system camera, but an RF mount video camera. I also don’t know if this is a totally new product, or if it’s an adapted Cinema EOS camera that is currently available.
I believe we may see an announcement for this camera during the last week of August, or the first week of September ahead of when IBC 2020 is scheduled to happen.
More to come…

MTFs for Canon R 100-500mm, 600 f/11 and 800 f/11

IMPORTANT EDIT: Canon has out-of-date MTF charts listed on its USA site for some lenses. Thanks to alerts from subsequent posts, I have gone to the Japanese site https://cweb.canon.jp/eos/ and have revised the charts and conclusions. This opening post has been rewritten so as not to mislead and I have added data from the EF and RF extenders.

Canon has at last uploaded the calculated MTF values for the new R telephotos, and I have made a collage of them with the those from the 100-400mm II as reference. To summarise, the 100-500 is slightly better at 100mm and slightly weaker at 500mm than the 100-400mm II at 400mm. The differences are slightly magnified by the EF and and RF 1.4x and 2xTCs. The new RF 2xTC gives a significant hit on IQ and does not appear to be an improvement on the old 2xTCIII. The 600mm and 800mm f/11 lenses are somewhat disappointing in terms of resolution and are outperformed in IQ by the RF zoom with extenders where the focal lengths overlap and to a similar extent by the old 100-400mm II.

Do you think that there will be a firmware update of the EOS-1D X Mark III to allow detection of animals? Does it have to be mirrorless to do that?

Next step in tele - difficult decision - especially now in between EF and RF.

Need some experienced input to my decision-making regarding my plan to upgrade my tele-lens.
Currently I am on a Canon 6D Mk II and a Tamron 150-600mm 1.G.
Mostly used for wildlife - e.g. birds of prey in flight and Kingfishers.

I am looking for faster, sharper, better focusing - I often find my photos 'almost in focus' and 'almost sharp'.

Can not afford / can not carry the largest big whites. Find 400mm DO II attractive and within limits.

Have read a lot about it - mostly very positive.
Will it perform well on 6D II ? and with 1.4 TC III ?

Also within a year I expect to own a new R-camera (R5 or R6 - depending on how well they perform).
This should probably affect my tele-considerations.

I know that an EF-tele will perform fine on adapter.
Still: Will I regret investing in an EF big white, once I am on the RF-system, and when RF-system offers a variety of RF-tele-options - perhaps with added new benefits?
For example: When on R5 or R6 would the new RF 100-500mm be a better option?
I am aware of the new F/11 RF-teles - interesting, but probably not my first choice.

Thank you in advance for any insightful input.
