How are you coping?

How has the pandemic affected you or your business so far? All of the creative pros I know are shut down and many of them work the type of events that will be the last to have its restrictions lifted (weddings, trade events, sports, etc.) If there is a 2nd and 3rd wave and governments implement an on and off approach to social distancing, this industry will be devastated. At least a few of my acquaintances are considering a career change at this point depending on how things evolve from here. It's anecdotal right now, but most are not planning system upgrades or purchases this year and possibly next year. Some have expressed to their commercial landlords that they will be paying 20-50% of their normal rent for the next 3 months and hedging the risk of eviction with the fact that the landlord rather get something than $0 with no possibility of finding a new tenant during this crisis.

But even aside from working pros, how many enthusiasts have lost their jobs or suffered pay cuts as a result of covid-19? I'm mostly a weekend warrior and my primary profession is in an essential sector and largely unaffected by this downturn (fortunately), but with that being said, in terms of my photo/video work, many of my current clients this year have postponed or cancelled their events/planned works and the team I shoot with on larger productions are all shut down meaning things went from 100 to 0 overnight. Obviously those who weather this storm will end up with less competition when the dust clears, but those that fail still have families to feed and rent/mortgages to pay..

I feel for those affected right now and wondering how everyone else is coping? Even if you are not a working pro, has your GAS been affected by this at all given that you may not have as many places to shoot this year or perhaps even next year when the fall/winter cycle brings new unknowns...

FWIW: My cameras and bodies have been sitting on the shelf since end of Feb and my last works was for a client operating a large health spa/entertainment facility. Hopefully they and the ad agency that hired us will still be around to get paid as a facility like that won't get to re-open at least until late summer or worse at this point. Maybe during this time Sony can actually release a non april fools touch menu update instead of going radio silence unlike Canon who has gone gangbusters on their new R5.

Canon posts first quarter of 2020 financial results

Canon has posted their first quarter of 2020 financial results, as expected, COVID-19 has impacted their businesses across the board.
From Canon:
In the first quarter, amid ongoing camera market contraction, we posted a significant drop in revenue. This was due to a shortage of products linked to supply-chain issues that arose in connection with COVID-19.
Going forward, we will make every effort to minimize the sales impact, carrying out flexible parts procurement that takes into consideration the operating status of suppliers and clarifying our priorities as it relates to the production of each model.
In addition to the impact on supply, sales of interchangeable-lens cameras were also greatly affected. One after another, life events were canceled or postponed and chances to use cameras decreased. In addition to this, we believe it will take time to see a recovery in the demand for cameras, which are considered luxury items, even after the global economic turmoil has...

The Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 won’t ship for a while

I have been told that both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 will not begin shipping until July at the earliest. It’s likely we’ll be getting low initial quantities of both cameras as well.
There are obviously delays attached to the COVID-19 pandemic all the way through the supply chain.
I expect both to be announced before then, and I was told today that the EOS R6 was still scheduled to be announced in May.
As for the official Canon EOS R5 announcement? I can’t see Canon dragging it out another 60-90 days, that would crush the hype train that they’ve been building, as there is not much more to tell us about the camera besides very specific specifications and price.
More to come…

The Canon EOS R6 is still scheduled to be announced in May [CR2]

I have been told that Canon still plans to announce the Canon EOS R6 sometime in May, and we can also expect the Canon EOS R5 to also be officially announced in May.
The availability for each camera is reportedly still up in the air.
I’ve also seen some reports around the web comparing the Canon EOS R6 to the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III just because the sensor resolution is the same. The EOS R6 will NOT use the same sensor as the EOS-1D X Mark III.
The EOS R6 will be a big step down from the EOS R5, so please temper those expectations. It’ll still be a great camera, but it’s targetted at a very different user than the EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III.
Canon EOS R6 Specifications:

20mp full-frame CMOS sensor
IBIS
12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic.
4K @ 60p
FullHD @ 120p
Dual card slots
No top-down screen
Lower resolution EVF than the EOS R5
Build quality not as good as the EOS R5
New battery (Not sure if it’s the same as the EOS R5)
June 2020 launch

Using old manual focus FD/FL lenses on the R

Has anyone else bought a cheap adapter so you can use your old manual focus Canon lenses on the R? I picked up one from Amazon for $17 (Fotasy) and then found a nice 28mm 1.8 FD lens for $100. I still have a 50mm 1.8 and I think a 35mm 1.8 too.

Manual focus works well with the focus peaking enabled. You do have to change the camera settings to enable the shutter to fire without a lens - since there's no electrical contacts in the adapter (hence the dirt cheap price) the camera doesn't know there's a lens attached.

Requires manual focus - obviously - and manually setting the f-stop. Reminds me so much of shooting film on my old F-1.

Industry News: Samsung takes aim at making 600mp image sensors

Taking pictures or videos throughout the day has become part of our normal lifestyles and no longer done just to capture special events. Whip out your mobile camera to immortalize a delectable-looking meal, to record your latest dance moves, or even just when you’re having a good hair day, and you’re ready to share your images with friends right away. These seamless experiences have become possible thanks to remarkable advancements in recent mobile photography, and at the very heart of this revolution is the mobile chips that transform light into digital data – image sensors.

The image sensors we ourselves perceive the world through – our eyes – are said to match a resolution of around 500 megapixels (Mp). Compared to most DSLR cameras today that offer 40Mp resolution and flagship smartphones with 12Mp, we as an industry still have a long way to go to be able to match human perception capabilities.
Simply putting as many pixels as possible together into a sensor might seem like...

We had announced to you that the EXPO in the EMEA region would take place in Barcelona (Spain) from October 19 to 21, 2021, at the Center Conventions International Barcelona (CCIB).

Did Canon confirm the 45mp resolution of the Canon EOS R5 sensor?

As Canon News points out, it looks like Canon has confirmed the resolution of the Canon EOS R5 image sensor.
How did they do this?
Canon has specified in the latest EOS R5 information that the camera will shoot 8K DCI, which is 8192×4320. Since Canon has said that 8K recording uses the full width of the sensor, the sensor would be 8192 pixels wide. Canon sensors use a 3:2 aspect ratio, so that would mean the height of the sensor is 5461 pixels, which equals 44.7mp.
I’ve been reporting for quite some time that the image sensor would be 45mp, so this seems to back up those long-running rumors.
If the math is wrong, please let me know.

5D4 Card-Folder Selection question.

Colleagues:
I'm a photojournalist. I shoot with 2 5D4s, and always use both CF and SD cards. I always choose "record to both" cards, because I am more interested in duplicate images for backup than I am in running out of space.
My question is: Can I somehow "lock" my selection of "Card-Folder Selection" to, say, SD card 2? Somehow, the selection often mysteriously toggles between 1 and 2.
The reason this is important to me is that I have upgraded to voice-memo recording; BUT (I learned the hard way) this only records to ONE of the 2 cards (the one that is selected as Card-Folder selection). Since I usually import images to my laptop from my SD card, I often lose my voice memos which have been recorded on card 1, the CF card.
Is there any reliable workaround for this?
Thanks in advance... John

Question: what size is optimal for posting own images here / size limits?

sorry, probably I am blind. Searching for but cannot find max. size / limitations of (own) images if I want to post them in forum - Image and Video Galleries Section.

Is there a max. resolution (pixel x pixel) or max. file size or other? And could you please advise, what size best to use, also to avoid images being re-compressed or "optimized" after upload. Thanks!

Hello,

I found the following "issue" or small bug with CR Page in Microsoft Edge (the new version):
I'm working with Windows10 Professional 64bit.

I am logged in to canon rumors and I set the dark style theme as my default.
When I am on the Home page, the page is displayed in light style and my username is not displayed but instead the Log in key symbol is presented in the top right corner.

If I click on the key symbol to log me in I get the message that I'm already loggged in.
