Patent: Canon RF 8mm f/4 Fisheye

Canon News has uncovered a patent for an RF 8mm f/4 fisheye optical formula. By the looks of the patent translation, this is likely for full-frame image sensors.
This fisheye design has a full 180-degree angle of view.

Stir crazy lockdown macro.

Hi Folks.
Macro shots of stuff found in the house! No cropping.

The full stack of extension tubes is 65mm!

I’m afraid on some of the shots I have missed critical focus slightly, I had the camera set up looking down on to a window sill in the sun and as the session progressed the lubrication in the lens must have been thinning in the heat as the lens zoom started to move unaided and I didn’t notice as I was doing this whilst on a FaceTime call with my two photography buddies, trying to show them how macro is done and answer their questions, fortunately they both have extension tubes but neither of them had lens reversing rings.

Although we have done a group session on macro before it was a couple of years ago and they had pretty much forgotten all I showed them.

Please join in if you have some shots taken during lockdown.

Stay safe, stay in if you can, be well please.

Cheers, Graham.

Ps, I should also state that although I was trying to teach my friends, I am no expert! But you could probably tell that already!

Two new EOS M camera bodies coming in the second half of 2020 [CR2]

I have been told that Canon will address the EOS M lineup in the second half of 2020. The Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 will be the first to get announced and begin shipping before an EOS M camera announcement.
A Canon EOS M50 Mark II would make sense, but the second EOS M camera remains a bit of a mystery.
I am also told that Canon will be announcing more prime lenses for the EOS M mount in the second half of 2020 as well.
Please take into consideration that these plans may be affected by the current global pandemic.
More to come…

Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III appears in Canon’s product lineup

The Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III we’ve been reporting about for the last couple of weeks has shown up in Canon’s product list, along with a new CN-E 10-25mm cinema lens.
Below is some Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III that we had previously reported.
Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III information:

Most likely will be called C300 Mk III (almost 100% confirmed)
It has the same body as the C500 Mk II and uses the same accessories
Just as the C500 Mk II, it has the same optical axis as the C200 and C700 cameras, so the bridge plates, shoulder mounts, and rod supports are the same
It sports a 4K super 35 sensor with the capability of recording 4K120 without crop in Cinema RAW Light format
It also has a “dual ISO” function when recording in XF-AVC
It has an anamorphic de-squeeze function and false-color built in for monitoring (with the C300 Mk II you had to use an external monitor with these...

Canon Closing Offices -COVID-19

I see some news reports this morning that Canon has announced they will be temporarily closing their Tokyo headquarters as well as some other locations due to COVID-19.

I'm guessing that employees will be working from home and they are not closing manufacturing facilities, but I do wonder how this can not affect release schedules, especially since we have seen a delay in 1Dx III shipments and it sounds like they will be concentrating on their medical division for the time being -- as they should.

Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM in the pipeline [CR1]

I have been told by an unknown source that Canon will announce an RF 85mm f/2 IS STM in 2020.
The same source claims that a whole line of f/2-f/2.8 non-L prime lenses with IS are coming in the next 12 months.
The same source mentions that the line of prime lenses will start at 18mm and go up to 85mm. This seems like pretty wishful thinking from my point of view, but I have been surprised before.
Take this one with a grain of salt until we can confirm the information above [CR1].

RF mount cinema camera in the works [CR2]

I have been told that Canon is actively working on a new RF mount cinema style camera. This RF mount camera we are told will be a new product.
The same source claims that this new camera could take the spot in the Cinema EOS lineup of the Cinema EOS C100 Mark II.
The new camera design language could be similar to the XC series of cameras, small and easy to use.
By the sounds of it, they’re developing a camera to see what the market demand is for an RF mount video camera.
I also expect to see more video-focused RF lenses announced in the next 12-18 months.
More to come…

Newbie camera help m6 ii vs ?

Hello,
New to the forum. Thanks for any advice.
I'm looking to get my 15yr old kiddo a camera.
We don't know anybody in the hobby so I'm looking for advice here.

I was thinking of getting her the Canon m6 ii.
My concern is that it's a bit expensive.
I'm questioning if it's worth the expense for someone starting out... Will having something more versatile encourage use and ultimately have the ability to take better pics. Or could something cheaper be just as good.
I know a beginner won't appreciate what a higher end camera can do but assuming she grows into the hobby will it be worth the expense?
I hate the thought of spending 300$ on something entry level that will be out grown shortly after learning the hobby then have to sell and upgraden anyways.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Kevin

Patent: Pop up viewfinder to allow for larger rear LCD displays

Northlight has uncovered a patent showing a pop-up viewfinder for PowerShot cameras, which also includes an eye-detection sensor.
It appears that this development will allow for a larger LCD on the rear of the camera.
While this looks like it would be for PowerShot cameras, perhaps a future very small form factor RF mount camera could use this sort of viewfinder as well.

Camera for a Beginner

Hello, I have a friend who asked me to recommend a camera for her. She is young and interested in photography. My first question was what is your budget. "$150." I don't know anything about cameras in this price range... Obviously I want to recommend Canon, but what is there? Are Powershots actually good or should she just stick with her phone and save up from there?
Thanks!

RF 1.4x

I've just received an email from Canon announcing the 1.4x (& 2.0x) RF Converters.

Is it me, or are the details a ‘bit thin’? Is this an RF>RF tele-converter, or RF>EF (which is what I’m really after)?

I can't see myself ever upgrading my 200 or 400 lenses, and if it is RF>RF, what lenses is this for?
