24-105 Z - does it tend to overexpose?

Somehow I can't shake the impression that the 24–105 Z, when used with any of my EOS camera bodies, tends to slightly overexpose.
Have any of you noticed the same thing with your copy?

For example, when I'm shooting reportage in consistent daylight conditions: Av mode, wide open aperture, Auto ISO, I only find the exposure to look neutral, when I dial in between -1/4 and -1/3 EV exposure compensation.

I can't observe this behavior with any of my other Canon lenses, they used to be natural at +/- 0 EV in 98% of the situations.
So I'm wondering: is this a general calibration characteristic of this lens, or could it be that only my particular copy is affected?

When Will Canon End Official Repair Service for Your Gear?

Canon has updated their list of when official repair service ends for cameras, lenses and accessories. They can’t service things forever. Why it matters? I think it’s valuable information, espcially those that are sticking with EF and buying from the used market. EF is still great and you’re going to save a ton of money […]

Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM Version 2 Coming?

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is one of the original lenses announced in September of 2018 alongside Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R. We’re guessing that a lot of early adopters picked up this small and capable 35mm prime. For the second time in the last couple of months, a […]

Two Never Before Seen Lenses Coming from Canon This Year

Canon’s latest announcements were the EOS R6 V and RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ. For the most part they have been well received by the reviewer world with the usual complaints about Canon stuff, but all in all, it’s nice to see positivity. We still have a while to wait before both begin shipping, […]

Canon 5D Mark IV 'problem' or my 'ignorance': Pls Help!

After having changed to mirrorless (owning now the Canon R6 Mark II and Canon R7), last week I decided and bought the fullframe Canon 5D Mark IV (I own the APS-C Canon 7D). Out of the box, battery and memory card ready, I turned upset/nervous with something: Only in Av (or also in Tv mode), choosing an aperture (i.e. f/8), no matter the different brightness I pointed the camera to, the shutter speed (or the aperture in Tv) remained always the same, turning the file underexposed or overexposed! never that had happened before with any Canon camera I had owned. So, or there's a real problem with the upper left dial only in Av or Tv modes (not in P or M), or... for the first time I feel dumb with the menu of a Canon camera! (No, no exposure limits reached, nor ISO problem: tried setting to 100 and also in auto). Something else to try? Please help! Thanks, guys!

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III Has Been Discontinued

The end has come for another classic Canon EF lens. According to asobinet and various retailers, Canon has discontinued the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III. While it may still be available new in a box from retailers, production has ended and whatever is left in stock in Canon warehouses and at dealers is it. […]

Canon EOS R52 Firmware 1.3.0 May Cause Freezing with Touch & Drag AF

Some users have reported that firmware version 1.3.0 for the Canon EOS R52 may cause the camera to freeze when using the touch-and-drag autofocus feature.

On Chinese social media, a small number of R52 users have reported that after updating to firmware 1.3.0, enabling the “Touch & Drag AF” function (sorry, I’m not sure of the exact English menu name — it is the first option on the second page of the green menu tab) can cause the camera to freeze completely, requiring the battery to be removed and reinserted in order to recover.

Some users reported that the issue can be reproduced consistently when using the EVF while dragging on the touchscreen to move the focus point. Others said the camera may freeze even without dragging. However, all of them reported that disabling the Touch & Drag AF feature resolves the issue.

Some users have already reported this problem to Canon China, but at the moment Canon China has not officially acknowledged or reproduced the issue, and they are still waiting for additional user reports.

Sony ups the ante with the A7RVI and FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS

Sony has officially announced the 66.8MP back-illuminated stacked sensor A7R and their new telephoto lens 100-400mm f/4.5 lens. The lens weighs in at 1.84 kg, which will be about 2 kg with hood. I would be using such a lens most of the time with a 2xTC on it to give a 200-800mm f/9, which would be heavier than the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-f/9, and narrower through the shorter focal lengths.

Lens Dust Cap RF II – Canon's BIGGEST 13-May announcement

In addition to launching the EOS R6 V and the RF 20-50mm f/4L PZ lens today, Canon launched something even bigger. And I'm not being facetious!

Canon's Mark II rear lens cap, the Lens Dust Cap RF II, mounts just like EF rear lens caps – in any of the three orientations, not just one. The new rear cap costs $8 (same as the original replacement RF dust cap), and starts shipping on July 1st.

Note that B&H will not let you order more than 10. With Adorama, I was able to change the quantity to 22 and place the order.

Which body for filming? Eos R6V or C50? Or staying with R5II???

Hello!

I've been using the video function of my EOS R5 Mark II more and more lately. Since this often means missing out on still photos if something happens outside the frame, I'd like to get a second modern camera body. My question is whether I should buy another EOS R5 Mark II, or an R6V or C50. I would then use the latter for video recording. An R5 Mark II would technically work, but I constantly get annoying overheating warnings. A higher resolution than 4K is desirable, as I occasionally like to incorporate motion into my videos through editing.

Thank you

RRS launches more affordable Core Line

Really Right Stuff has just launched a new line of tripods called Benchmark, the leadoff for a new Core Line that promises 'performance within reach', specifically the famed RRS precision and reliability for (on average) 30% lower prices.

As an example, the Benchmark tripod offers similar specs to the Versa 24L Mk2 in terms of tripod size and weight and having 4 leg sections, and the former costs $945 compared to $1195 for the latter. Having said that, the Benchmark is rated for an 18 kg / 40 lb load compared to 32 kg / 70 lb for the Versa 24L...so it seems you still get what you pay for. Then again, RRS tripods are over-engineered for their support rating, for example my travel tripod is a TQC-14 that's rated for 11 kg / 25 lbs, and yet I can literally hang under the tripod and it supports my weight...which is far greater than 11 kg. So an 18 kg load rating is likely more than sufficient for almost any rig you'd want to mount on the tripod.

I also question the tagline. Yes, $945 is less expensive than $1195...but both are still expensive. Despite that, I think it's a good thing that they're launching a more affordable line, as relative as that term may be in this case.

The other thing I will say is that from a quality standpoint, RRS is hard to beat. I've had the TQC-14 as a travel tripod and the TVC-33 for use with my 600/4 for nearly 14 years, and they're functioning and even looking good as new, as are the ballheads and gimbal head that I bought concurrently.
