Canon EOS R, RF 28-70mm f/2L. (70mm, 1/400 sec, @f/2, ISO 400, Aperture priority, spot metering) Words cannot describe how impressed I am with this lens and the hit rate of the R's eye AF. This was taken through some brush between us in natural light (shade), with a small speedlight on a Manfrotto nano stand right behind her. I probably should have dialed down the power of the speedlight a little more, but I'm still learning and she is ecstatic about the photos. Just placed an order for the RF 85mm f/1.2L as I am very confident in Canon's new system. Best I have ever used.

New 5D4 Memo recording firmware -- usable for multiple cards?

Colleagues --
I was very happy to see the 5D4 firmware upgrade to allow voice memo recordings on my 5D4. (I'm a photojournalist.) I had CPS install this at once.

My question is: can this be made to record the WAV file to BOTH cards, or only one?

My default setting on my 5D4 bodies are to "record to multiple cards", meaning that each image I take is recorded identically to both the CF and th SD cards.

But my WAV files show up only on one card. In my "Record function-card/folder select', when I set it to 2, the WAV file is only recorded to 2, not to 1, the CF card.

Is there a setting allowing recording to both cards?

Thank you all for your assistance and advice.

John

An APS-C sensor equipped EOS R camera mentioned again [CR1]

In a couple of weeks, we’ll see the Canon EOS 90D released, a camera that has been rumored for quite some time to be a replacement for both the EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II. If the EOS 90D is more 80D than EOS 7D Mark II, then there could be a perceived hole in Canon’s lineup without an APS-C wildlife/sports camera.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have received some more mentions of an EOS R series camera with an APS-C sensor still being “considered” by Canon and that testing for such a camera has taken place.
The same source did mention that there are no plans for any sort of RF-S lenses, which would make a lot of sense as the development of the EF-S lineup seems to be have been abandoned beyond updated kit lenses.
More to come…

EOS R Tips and Tricks

Starting a thread in the hopes of learning and sharing advice on using the EOS R. Not interested in people's opinion on the R generally. Instead I'm looking for practical advice from other R users.

Specifically, to start the thread off:

Advice on using the bar thingy – How are people using this? I've tried using it change the autofocus selection method and number of points selected. While it's quick and can be convenient, I find that the bar is so close to the rear screen that I am constantly changing the number of autofocus points in the middle of shooting. I've tried the "tap" settings but they seem to be completely random. Working sometimes and doing absolutely nothing other times.

If you are not using the bar to change the autofocus points/zones, how are you selecting the number of points? (Not talking about picking a particular point to focus on, but rather the selection of how many points are active)

How are people using the control ring on the lens? I've used it exclusively for changing ISO. I've found that very handy, but wondering what others are using it for.

Anyone else find the location of the control ring on the 24-105 annoying? I think the position on the control ring adapter is far more intuitive and wish Canon had placed the ring at the back of the lens on the native mount RF lenses (I only own the 24-105 RF, so I don't know where the ring is located on other lenses.)

Anyone using the FV mode? I can't figure out why sometimes to allows you to change exposure compensation and sometimes it doesn't. What's the deal with that?

I'm sure I will have more questions, but I hope these will get a discussion started.

Patent: Expanded dynamic range using DPAF sensors

Canon News has uncovered a patent showing how to increase dynamic range using DPAF equipped sensors.
Here’s a breakdown of Canon Japan Patent Application 2019-129491:
The basic idea is that during read mode, one half of the pixel is amplified at one level, and the other half is amplified at another level.  reading the two simultaneously and processing can increase the dynamic range of the sensor.  Basically dual ISO.
It should be noted that the patent does mention in-vehicle sensors, but can also be applied to any other type of sensor as well.

An RF super telephoto zoom on the way, likely in late 2020 [CR1]

We have been told that Canon is working on an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM equivalent for the RF mount, though the lens may not have a matching focal length range.
We have been told on more than one occasion that Canon is working on an RF 200-500mm L zoom and that we could see it in late 2020.
The same source says that the long-rumoured EF supertelephoto zoom development was killed off “quite some time ago” as focus on new lens designs moves to the RF mount.

Canon issues a security advisory for PTP equipped EOS DSLRs, EOS mirrorless and PowerShot cameras

From Canon:
An international team of security researchers has drawn our attention to a vulnerability related to communications via the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), which is used by Canon digital cameras, as well as a vulnerability related to firmware updates.
(CVE-ID:CVE-2019-5994, CVE-2019-5995, CVE-2019-5998, CVE-2019-5999, CVE-2019-6000, CVE-2019-6001)
Due to these vulnerabilities, the potential exists for a third-party attack on the camera if the camera is connected to a PC or mobile device that has been hijacked through an unsecured network.
At this point, there have been no confirmed cases of these vulnerabilities being exploited to cause harm, but in order to ensure that our customers can use our products securely, we would like to inform you of the following workarounds for this issue.

Ensure the suitability of security-related settings of the devices connected to the camera, such as the PC, mobile device, and router being used.
Do not connect the camera to a PC or...

LOOKING FOR FLASH DOME - HARD TO FIND

Looking for something the pic included, its on amazon WITH the canon 600 but I can't find it separately. The selens ones are rubber and too expensive, but I got 2 of these plastic ones about 2 years ago on either ebay or alixpress and now they are impossible to find. Shouldn't cost more than $15. Thanks in advance if anyone can send me link where to get. And it doesn't have to be screw in, I don't mind the slip on version.

Patent: Canon RF 50-80mm f/1.1, because crazy is good

We’ve been told that some “crazy” lenses were coming to the RF mount, and here’s a patent uncovered by Northlight that fits the bill.
Canon appears to be working on a fast portrait zoom for the RF mount, with the fastest of the bunch being an RF 50-80mm f/1.1. The number of lens elements in the lens design is remarkable.
Canon RF 50-80mm f/1.1:

Focal length: 51.50mm 64.17mm 82.52mm
F-number: 1.13 1.13 1.13
Half angle of view: 22.79° – 18.63° – 14.69°
Total lens length 220.20mm 225.05mm 224.20mm
BF 6.51mm 6.53mm 8.64mm

Also included in this patent are optical formulas for a RF 50-80mm f/1.2, RF 50-80mm f/1.4, RF 50-80mm f/1.6 and a RF 50-80mm f/1.8.
We expect some new lens designs to be announced in the first half of 2020. Keep in mind, just because there’s a patent, doesn’t mean we’ll actually see this as a product.

Claimed Breakthrough Solution to Spherical Aberration in Lens Design

Just stumbled across this and thought it would be of interest to this group.

Both Canon and Nikon are in deep trouble after financial reports.

I wrote several posts, but so many morons backfired at me. I have over 50+ years of experience in photography. Now, I have solid proof here.

Both Nikon and Canon made ill-fated decisions to focus on the mirrorless system. They were failures with a lot of technical problems in both bodies and lenses. They stopped to sell Nikon and Canon DSLR along with both F and EF lenses. They want to channel their money into the mirrorless system development. They lost a lot of money and laid off so many innocent employees into the street. Thousands of professional photographers were not happy toward both Nikon and Canon included myself which I stopped buy new products for my work.

Both Canon and Nikon are in deep financial trouble and may lead end of the business by the bankrupt. This due to flipped by upper management people included CEO.

The mirrorless camera system was never a reliable hardware design. Error in hardware caused a lot of trouble-prone. The engineers decided to design new models instead of correct hardware design with current cameras and lenses. I do not know if they can resolve the entire situation, I hate to say, it seems to me it was DONE.
