Patent: Eye-controlled autofocus for mirrorless cameras

Is Canon preparing to return a feature from the days of the EOS-3? The feature being eye-controlled autofocus.
A patent uncovered by Canon News shows us that Canon is working on the technology for eye-controlled autofocus for mirrorless cameras. Eye-controlled autofocus uses your eye to select the autofocus point, so no joystick or touchscreen interaction is required to move the autofocus point around.
Canon News explains Japan Patent Application 2019-129461:
We have a mirrorless camera (Canon specifically states this by including item 10, which is a display element for the viewfinder).  The important pieces are 13a-13f which are light sources for illuminating the line of sight of the photographer’s pupil. The half mirror is in place so...

Selling gear

I have all my EF gear on ebay right now. I sold the 24-70 in about two hours with no problem The problem is going to be the 5D Mark III. Everybody wants the shutter count... which is kind of silly for me to consider going through the ordeal of figuring out. I'm pretty sure the count is pretty low, but considering the condition (very good) I would not have thought that to be a problem. Canon will do it, but for $150. Other websites will do it, but many of them are notorious for inaccurate counts. Some are even known to have malware attached. So if I send the camera to Canon, that is -$150, then the ebay fees come up (high) I would just about have to give the camera away. Frustrating. I don't want to use a site other than Canon and then a buyer try to double check using a guesstimate website and start a row with paypal/e-bay. The lenses will sell just fine. No problem. Should I just wait for a buyer that is savvy enough to understand? One buyer wanted to knock $300 off my $999 price just because I don't have a shutter count listed. I don't want to lie. Many sellers just give a count, but I don't see any paperwork displayed proving what they have. Any ideas?

Patent: Canon appears to be continuing development of EF mount optical formulas

A patent showing continued development in EF mount optical formulas has appeared at the Japan Patent Office this past week.
This patent covers two optical formulas, one being an EF 20mm f/1.4 and the other being an EF 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6.
I don’t feel either of these optical formulas will become new products and this is more about the development of lens technologies than the optical formulas themselves.

A bit more about the upcoming Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II

We posted some Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II specifications a couple of weeks ago, and we continue to receive trickles of new information about the soon-to-be-announced camera.
We have received some confirmation that the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II will have the same full-frame sensor as the Cinema EOS C700FF, and will be capable of recording in 5.9K internally to the CFexpress.
The same source said that the camera will cost under $20,000 USD.
The announcement for the Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II is scheduled for the first week of September ahead of IBC.
Alongside the new Cinema Camera, Canon will also announce a new 31″ 4K HDR display ahead of IBC in September.

A new EOS Rebel is coming this month, possibly an EOS Rebel T8i or entry level EOS M camera[CR1]

We were sent a strange rumor this week, one we figured was a typo. “Canon will announce the EOS Joey in August”. So I took to Twitter to figure out what sort of autocorrect error would come up with “Joey”, and someone came up with “Kiss”, which is what Rebel’s are called on certain areas of the planet.
Which Rebel is due for replacement? We think the EOS Rebel T7i/800D/Kiss X9i is a little long in the tooth, as it was announced back in February of 2017.
There are no specifications at this time, but the bigger leaks are likely coming over the next week or two.
As pointed out on our forum, it’s possible that it could also mean a new entry-level EOS M camera is coming, as the EOS M50 also received the “Kiss” designation.

Letter to Canon

Dear Canon,

You continue to make great gear, but while I've been enjoying to use Canon cameras and lenses for years, there's something I do not understand:
Do we all need (and want) big fat heavy fast lenses?
Do we all need (and prefer) to shoot wide open?
What about the many landscape photographers and travellers - don't we earn the same attention, wouldn't we appreciate and enjoy small and lightweight L-primes as well as our portrait, wedding and astro photographer friends do with their big primes?

''We have first class zooms'', you may say, ''which offer many focals lenghts in one lens and maybe even less weight than with a couple of prime lenses.''
Right... but you know better than me the advantages of primes over zooms – or why does anyone make and use primes at all? Do you want to tell me that I can only choose between zooms and older EF non-L primes, if I don't want to carry bricks in my backpack?

''But then we can make these lenses not faster than f4 or even f5.6''
, you may say, and maybe you're right again.
Well... does this really matter to landscape photographers who more than often stop down to f8 anyway?
You can taylor lenses to perform best at f1.4 or so. Can't you taylor small primes for optimum performace at f11 or even f16? Ok, optimize them for f8 and give us sensor based focus stacking instead. With IBIS, we even wouldn't need in-lens IS, and the majority of landscape photographers that I know and meet use tripods anyway.

Hey Canon, you make ''Look-what-we-can-do'' lenses with incredible performance and we are really deeply impressed.
I know, physics are limiting things now and then, and I'm not an expert in this regard, but do ''Look-what-we-can-do'' lenses automatically need to be big and heavy?
Well, you're in good company with other lens makers in this regard, but show us what YOU can do by giving us a series of small L quality primes, from 12mm to 135mm or so.
Make them small, make them light, make them L, make them perfect.

I think you will make more money, because you will have more custumers: those who don't want to carry or who can't afford the heavy beasts.

Last but not least, don't tell me this would be impossible. 50 years ago, men flew to the moon.

Continue to be the best, and don't forget the rest!

Very truly yours,
A Friend

1. I'm not new to photography (30 years of medium and large format behind me, Canon shooter for five years now), but I'm new to this forum.
2. English is not my native language, so forgive me some bumps here and there.
3. I'd like to know what you photographer friends out there think...

Thinking about going mirrorless and looking for advice

I currently have a 7D Mark II, and I'm thinking about switching to a mirrorless system because of the size - I mainly use my camera for travel photography, and the 7DII is a bit of a monster that takes up a lot of space and weight when I travel.

I was wondering if anyone here has made the switch and can share their experience? Having used a camera like the 7DII, did you opt for the Canon M or R system? Was there anything you missed about the DSLR when you switched? How does the image quality compare?

Since mine has a crop sensor, I think switching to a crop system is probably a good idea because of my lenses, but I'm actually looking to buy new lenses as well. I only ever use my Sigma 17-70 / 2.8-4.5 lens, but I think it's a bit broken because sometimes it doesn't focus anymore. The only other lens I occasionally use is a Canon 50 / 1.4 lens. As far as I can tell, there aren't a lot of lenses for mirrorless cameras on the market yet, which is the only thing that's keeping me waiting for now...

Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM coming in 2020 [CR1]

Could Canon be building an f/1.2 set of prime lenses for the RF mount? So far we have the stellar duo of the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM and the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM. According to the latest information we have received, more f/1.2L prime lenses are coming.
First up will be an RF 35mm f/1.2L USM, and we’re told that it is scheduled for release in 2020, though an announcement date isn’t known at this time.
The same source says an RF 24mm f/1.2L USM is also possible, but it isn’t currently on the product roadmap for 2020.
The image for this article is the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro.

Canon will reclaim their full-frame megapixel crown [CR1]

After Sony announced the A7R IV, Canon lost its full-frame sensor megapixel count crown. The new Sony comes in at 61mp, eclipsing Canon’s EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R duo, which have a 50.6mp full-frame sensor.
It has been rumored in the past that Canon will eclipse 70mp with their EOS 5DS  replacement and that it will come to the EOS R system and not the EOS DSLRs. So that means no DSLR replacement for the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R.
We were told recently that Canon will indeed “return to the top of the megapixel count for full-frame sensors” with the release of the EOS RS (we’re guessing on the name).
There have been two sensors tested in the new EOS R body, and it’s possible that the camera may come with a sensor over 80mp. The source noted that Canon is about to release brand new advancements in sensor technology and has “caught up to Sony”. What that means is unknown at this time.
The source did say that Canon will be “getting into the spec wars”...

Review: Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM

The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens, a lens that will surely become a classic like it’s EF mount and FD mount predecessors.
From The-Digital-Picture:
Meet your new favorite portrait lens.
When purchasing a prime lens (vs. a zoom lens), the focal length significantly determines what that lens is best used for and regarding the Canon RF 85mm F1.2 L USM Lens, Kazuto Ogawa, president and COO of Canon USA states “We envision this product as being the quintessential workhorse lens for portrait photographers of all skill levels.” Portrait photography is incredibly popular, the number of 85mm lenses available hints at the popularity of this focal length, and so often, 85mm is the ideal choice for portraiture, providing the ideal subject framing at a distance that creates a pleasing perspective. Three of the four new RF lenses are still scheduled for release in 2019

Earlier this year, Canon announced 6 new RF mount lenses to a lot of fanfare, unfortunately, we’ve only seen the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM of the six come to market. The RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM is scheduled to be released in September of 2019.
We have been told that 3 of the remaining 4 lenses will definitely come in 2019. The RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM are both scheduled to arrive in October. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the official announcement in late August or early September.
The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM won’t be coming until December of this year according to the latest information we’ve been sent.
This leaves only the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS USM as the unknown in the group. We haven’t heard anything about when we may see the Defocus Smoothing RF 85mm lens hit the market.

G7x III vs Rx100 Mark VII

When the G7x3 was announced, I placed a preorder. While I'm not against paying more for the new Sony Rx100 VII, I'm having difficulties seeing any real advantage. The following are the primary needs.

Pri 0 - My son uses it for his YouTube channel. His current biggest concerns are low light image quality and audio quality.
Pri 1 - A carry around camera for Disney parks and other cases where I don't want a larger camera
Pri 2 - Maybe in the future use as an underwater camera with housing. This is a big maybe because I'm not sure if I can obtain the budget for the housing, let alone for a pair of strobes. I currently use an Olympus TG-5 for this.

Our current camera in this space is the Sony Rx100 IV. Our main interest in either camera is due to the external mic port.

The following are what I see as the advantages of the Sony.
- 60 fps 4k vs 30 fps 4k. I don't see this as a big deal because my son currently has yet to exceed 30 fps. He also records everything in 1080P today anyways.
- Has a viewfinder. I almost never use the viewfinder, and my son never uses it.
- Super high speed video. Neither of us ever use this.
- Better AF. I'm not using this for sports or wildlife, so I'm not sure how much this matters.
- Longer lens, but this may be more of a negative. My son has no use for it and the longer lens causes more problems underwater, since as I understand you can't switch macro + wide wet lenses without going back to the surface, which isn't the case for the shorter lens.

The advantages I see of the G7x3.
- Better ergonomics. I cannot stress how much I bitterly hate Sony's menus. I would have sold the Rx100 IV long ago if my son didn't start using it.
- $500 cheaper
- Better perceived image quality. I haven't seen an improvement at all from the Rx100 IV to the VI, and it doesn't sound like the VII improved here either. Therefore, since the Canon has a brighter lens image quality should appear better, even though the sensor quality is the same. However, the Rx100 IV has a similar lens to the G7x3, so I expect the quality to look pretty similar.

Is there something I'm not seeing here? Are there killer video features that I haven't noticed?

Powershot G3X possible lens issue

I wonder if someone who owns a Powershot G3X can check something for me.

I have accidently dropped my new pride and joy and I believe I have an issue, I sent it away to a Canon recognised repair company for assessment, I explained the issue and sent it off. They received it on the 07/10/15 and I got it back today 04/11/15 so a good few weeks, they were waiting for a service sheet because its a new model Camera. Workshop report Mentioned error could not be found.

OK the error:

When the Camera is switched off and the lens is closed, the lens wobbles inside the lens housing it seems unsecure when walking along all you can hear is constant rattling around. As soon as its powered up and the lens opens to its first position its perfect and works as normal no problem.

Would an owner of the Powershot G3X https://cameravs.com/Canon-PowerShot-G3-X Camera check to see if this is normal and that the lens does rattle around?

I would imagine it's solid with no movement.

I really appreciate help. Many Thanks Lee

Note: I nipped to a Camera shop to look at a new one out of the box and it does the same. Its part of the IS System apparently (so what did I know) sorry everyone. Thank you

The Sony Juggernaut?

The author, a new Sony shooter, discuses the obvious cynicism of the 'sensors are us' company here. He surmises

Sometimes, it feels that Sony is a giant corporation that makes sensors and that its cameras are almost a byproduct. If it can undermine other camera manufacturers by releasing a product {like the A7R IV} that blows theirs out of the water (while overlooking so many other aspects), then why not? Four years on, it’s still not clear whether Canon will be able to match the performance of the sensor in the a9. Imagine what the a9 II might be about to offer.

Is RED about to announce the first RF mount video camera?

Newsshooter has reported a RED leak/teaser for an upcoming camera called the Komodo. What’s interesting about the camera is one of the teaser images shows what looks to be an RF lens mount.
RED President Jarred Land has declared what this camera is NOT, but no information on what it is.

It is not DSMC3
It is not a replacement for DSMC2
It is not 8k VV
It is not a Dragon or a Helium or a Gemini or a Monstro Sensor
It does not have an HDMI port
It does not use proprietary media
It is not a “module”
It is not under $5k, unless you own a Hydrogen.
It has no XLR ports
It does not have a fixed lens
It’s body does not weight more than 2 pounds.
It is not larger than 4 inches in any dimension.

Below are comparisons between the EF, RF and unknown mount of the upcoming Komodo.

Canon Q2 2019 financial results released

Canon released their Q2 financials this week, and things are a bit of a mixed bag for the company. There have been a lot of external forces at play in the USA, China and Europe and that has affected Canon’s profitability.
Canon breaks down their camera business in Q2:
Looking at interchangeable-lens cameras, in addition to market contraction centered on entry-class DSLRs, in 2018 we launched three new products that led to a high level of sales in the second quarter of last year. As a result, unit sales for the second quarter this year were down 22% to 1.08 million.
Against this backdrop, we successively launched strategic full-frame models into the mirrorless camera market from the second half of last year. The introduction of a high-end model, further heightened our presence in the market and at the same time had a positive impact on overall sales of our mirrorless cameras.
On the other hand, in the full-frame category of the market where price competition is increasing, as...
