Canon RF 28-70 f/2L and what else?

I'm thinking the RF 28-70 f/2L is going to be a must have for me. I am curious as to what the longer zoom will be. Will it also be f/2? Something like a 70-135? I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I can see myself very happy with just two zooms, though the RF 85mm f/1.2L and RF 50 f/1.2L would be awfully tempting. I'd have to have the zooms first though. Wider than 28mm isn't a worry for me. Still have my EF 24-70 f/2.8L II should I need a wider angle. Already missing my EF 35mm f/1.4L II though.

Lens Advice New York City

I haven't been to New York City since 2004. I wasn't so big into photography back then.
I was wondering if someone had advice what lens to bring to New York.
My memory is that the buildings are dramatically tall.
I will be doing alot of the classic shots like Manhattan Bridge from DUMBO, Skyline from the Old Pier, Probably Top of the Rock ( I did the Empire State the last time).
The newish station near the One World Trade Centre looks lovely.

Most probably I will bring the 16-35 F4 and 24-70.
I have a 11-24 which is a heavy lens. I'm not sure if it will be used. Has anyone used it there with good results.
I have a 24mm TS-E as well.
I could also bring a 70-200 or 100-400 but I'm not sure if I will use either.

I love modern architecture so if anyone has suggestions of good locations or buildings let me know.

Does anyone have the Blackmagic Design 4K "Pocket" Cinema Camera? Thoughts?

Hi all,

I have a 5D3 since they came out. It was my first DSLR and I bought it primarily back then as a video camera.<P>
Since then I've also become a big stills fan.

I'm waiting on the 5Dx replacement in the RF ....2 cards, etc.

However, in the meantime, I've been toying with buying into the BMD new 4K Pocket camera. I really trust the knowledge and advice folks here in the forum have, and wondering if anyone out there has this new camera?

If so, could you give your thoughts on it? Strengths? Weaknesses?

I'm thinking of getting one, and a speed booster to use my EF Canon glass on it....

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

Here’s a list of rumoured and predicted cameras coming from Canon in the next year

The next year will prove to be a big one for Canon on the camera body front, as we’re going to be going into an Olympic year on Canon’s home turf of Japan.
The first Photokina on the new schedule is also in 2020, with the show taking place May 27, 2020 – May 30, 2020.
Below is a list of rumoured and predicted cameras coming from Canon in the next year or so.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III
We expect this to be announced sometime in the first half of 2020 ahead of the summer games.
Canon EOS 90D
We expect to see this camera announced in the next couple of months, and its rumoured to replace both the EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II.
Canon EOS RS
A high-resolution EOS R camera is coming to replace the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R. Pixel count will be above 60mp and we expect to see it in the first half of 2020, though an announcement later in 2019 is possible.
Canon EOS RX
A high-speed, high-performance EOS R system camera. This is the one people really want to see from...

Best place to sell used gear in Australia?

Hi all,

Hope this thread will be seen by some fellow Aussie photographers ... but the whole section of the forum has not seen any movement since 2015 apparently so maybe I'm in the wrong place ...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for the best place to sell some used gear. Are there any good websites, forums, facebook groups, etc. that are used by photographers, where one would have a better chance of running into serious buyers (and serious sellers for that matter)? Basically anything better than just putting it on Gumtree, which I'm really trying to avoid?

I'm somewhat new to Australia, so not so familiar with things like this yet. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Patent: IBIS appears in a Canon DSLR for the first time

A new Canon patent for in-body image stabilization has appeared, and it looks like it is being worked on for DSLRs as well. This is the first time we’ve seen evidence of IBIS appearing in a mirror slapper.
Northlight says this patent deals with compositional issues and vignetting that could arise when the sensor moves for stability.
Could we see this in an upcoming DSLR? I think that would be a good thing for the EOS lineup, perhaps we’ll see it in the upcoming EOS 90D or EOS-1D X Mark III.

Patent: Canon working on lens cap technology!

A patent showing a new type of lens cap/lens hood that stays affixed to the lens has appeared from Canon as been uncovered by Canon News.
This lens cap design stays attached to the lens and also doubles as a lens hood for convenience.
This design may have some usability concerns with dedicated lens hoods and filters, but could still be the right solution for some people.
From Japan Patent Application 2019-113645:
The present invention works as a lens hood function at the time of shooting and as a lens protection function at the time of non-shooting, thus eliminating the need for lens cap attachment / removal and barrier opening / closing operations. .

SIGMA announces three DC DN prime lenses for the EF-M mount

SIGMA has decided that the Canon EF-M mount for the EOS M system is worth investing in by announcing that three DC DN prime lenses for the EF-M mount are on the way.
The first three lenses will be:

SIGMA 16mm f/1.4 DC DN
SIGMA 30mm f/1.4 DC DN
SIGMA 56mm f/1.4 DC DN

These aren’t new lens designs from SIGMA, as they’ve existed in other mounts for quite some time, but these will certainly add choice for EOS M shooters.
Pricing and availability will come at a later date.
SIGMA also announced three new lenses for the L mount and Sony’s FE mount. There was no announcement that these lenses will be coming for the RF mount at this time as was rumoured.

Grey Market

I was at the Canon Lyndhurst repair location today and I heard the tech and the main counter rep state that they identified a camera as Grey Market and weren't going to repair it under warranty.

I have no skin in the game. I don't know if the person who's gear it was convinced them to do it as there were no other customers in the service center that I could see. Perhaps other locations are different or other techs are different. I am sure some people have had success.

Do what you will with this information.

Cheers,

Montenegro - Part 1

Hi everyone,

it's been a while since I posted here last. People in this sub enjoyed my previous travel articles so I'd like to share my latest series about Montenegro.
If you have never heard of the small country of Montenegro before then it's about time, because it has so much to offer, especially in terms of its immensely diverse landscape. The sunny seaside, spectacular mountain ranges, woodlands and countless lakes are just some of the amazing aspects of this small Balkan country. This part is mainly about the west, around the Bay of Kotor and the Lovćen National park.
You can see it here.

See you guys!

PS: I also did a little article about my trip to Rome a few months ago that I forgot to share here. If you're interested please also check that one out here.

Fly-in fishing trip: Best 10-15 lb total weight photo loadout

All,

I've gotten roped into a bucket-list-y fishing trip with the in-laws. I don't fish but they sure do, and it'll be fun to spend some time outdoors... annnnnnnnd occasionally put down my rod and see what my camera might reel in. :)

Here's the catch (and why I'm writing): we're going to one of those fall off the grid fishing locations that you have to fly into in a puddle jumper. Weight is exceptionally limited, so I'm guessing I'll only be able to bring 10-15 lbs of total gear -- including everything: straps, support, bags, batteries, filters, etc.

I'm writing you brilliant lot to ask: If you only had 10-15 total lbs of photography gear to bring -- and the principal photography tool has to be my 5D3 -- what total loadout would you bring? Presume I can't sneak any extra gear with another person in my party.

Considerations (some may impact your choices, some may not):
1) The photography focus will be capturing the people I am traveling/fishing with (multiple boats at play here) and capturing the wildlife and surroundings. I doubt I will be doing any tripod landscape work as the focus will be fishing but quicker handheld snaps of the environment are fair game. I'd wincingly consider astro (which I am a rank novice at) at the campsite at night but don't want to burn all my weight on a fast wide lens + strong support to do it. The priority is daytime handheld work from the boat and perhaps some sunset walkabout shooting around the campsite.
2) Location = Ontario. Moose, caribou and black bears are the bigger land mammals I'd see. I'm guessing we're in eagle / owl / wolf territory as well.
3) Time of trip = in the next 90 days
4) Given that we'll largely be on boats each day, I was assuming (but talk me down) that I'd need one standard zoom or wide zoom for people, landscapes, etc. and one long zoom for the wildlife.
5) I currently own:
5D3 + Grip (which I rarely use)
28 f/2.8 IS
35 f/2 IS
40 f/2.8
50 f/1.4
100 f/2.8L IS
16-35 f/4L IS
24-70 f/4L IS
70-200 f/2.8L IS II
2x T/C III
...but would be willing to rent a lens.
6) We will have power where we are staying, so presume the LP-E6 charger is coming along and I don't need to pack a boatload of batteries. (Probably will bring just two.)
7) Presume I don't need to post-process / share shots while I'm out there. I may bring a Kindle to read with, but I will not waste weight on an iPad or laptop.

I'm presently thinking my [5D3] + [100-400L II rental] + [either my 24-70 f/4L IS or 16-35 f/4L IS] + [2x T/C III] would be a decent overall lightweight FF setup. But that + bags + batteries + filters may consume all my weight and lock me out from other lenses, a small tripod + ball head, a monopod, etc.

Thoughts? Discuss!

Canon RP Thread

I will soon be the proud owner of a Canon RP and since there doesn't seem to be a thread about the RP, I thought I might create one.

My question really has to do with the three adapters. I understand the basic adapter. I can really appreciate the idea of the drop in filter adapter. My question is what functionality the control ring adapter would have when an EF lens is mounted to it. Is it functional when using EF lenses? Or should I just stick with the plain adapter?

It will be a good long while before I can afford a native RF lens, so this is a concern for me.

Also, are there any actual RP users on this forum that can give a quick review. It seems the R gets all the love right now. Thanks guys!

Edit: Apparently I don't know how to create a thread. :(

Canon increased its global market share of still cameras in 2018

For all the internet hate Canon gets, they continue to do what you’re supposed to do as a company, sell more things than anyone else, and according to the latest numbers, Canon has done just that. In 2018, Canon increased its market share globally by 3.9%.
Now, it’s not all positive, as the digital camera market fell 22% in 2018. Which means Canon has a bigger piece of a smaller pie.
The top 5 camera companies control 85.2% of the global camera market.
Top 5 camera manufacturers by market share globally:

Canon 40.5% (+ 3.9)
Nikon 19.1% (- 2.7)
Sony 17.7% (- 0.7)
Fujifilm: 5.1% (+ 1.3)
Olympus: 2.8% (+ 0.1)

It looks like Sony continues to eat into Nikon’s market share, and I imagine is a second system for a lot of Canon shooters.
