So...why is a Leica so $$$$$$ Expensive?

Ok, I've never really looked into them much, but just was browsing around to see what Leica cameras cost and their lenses.....and WOW, pricey indeed.

I've got quite a collection of Canon L lenses....to go with my 5D3, that I bought about 4+months after it came out. It was my first DSLR and I've really gotten into it not only for video (my original primary reason for getting the 5D3), but for stills.

So, what does Leica give you, that a Canon 5 or even the 1D lines of cameras do not give you?

Why do they cost so much? Is it just brand name, or do they offer you something higher quality in some aspect of image making?

I can kind of understand why a medium format camera system costs more, but Leica's generally aren't medium format from what I can tell, they take pretty much the same sensor size as your more common DSLR, right?

Anyway, just was curious what makes them worth so much money...and who needs or buys them predominately?

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Are ff camera

Did you the interview with a Fujiflim exec where he said that ff is only 1/3 of camera sales? I would say this partly because unlike in the '60s to the mid '00 there were all levels of 35mm cameras from point & shoots (they are dead now) to expensive professional 35mm cameras unlike now for the most part 35mm cameras are expensive pro cameras except for the RP. I am interested in buying the RP.

My Review: Sigma vs Heliopan Polarizers

A few years ago I bought a Sigma circular polarizer based on an online review that tested many polarizers at the time. It was around fifty bucks as I recall. Last year I decided to buy a pricey Heliopan since I assumed it would perform better with my L series lenses. It was around two hundred bucks as I recall (though Adorama shows it currently at one hundred seventy five). I own three Canon L lenses and thankfully all three take a 77mm filter. Both of the filters I have are slim mount to prevent vignetting on wide angle lenses. The Sigma case says DG Ultra-Low Reflection Multi-Coating. The Heliopan case says Circular High Transmission SH-PMC. Interestingly, the cheaper Sigma actually has the better case. Though both are square hard plastic cases with hinge mounts, the Sigma has a raised plastic circle inside the bottom that holds the filter in place. The Heliopan lacks this and the filter slides around within the square.

Though I have been using the Heliopan exclusively since I got it, I decided to do a side-by-side comparison this afternoon. These are quick test shots and not artistic shots (nothing I would keep), so please don't use them to judge my photographic ability!

How Many Use Fv mode with their EOS R or RP Bodies?

I use Fv almost exclusively with my R after trying it. I can fix the exposure settings I want and let others be adjusted automatically. Shutter Speed, Aperture, Exposure Compensation, and ISO settings show across the bottom of my LCD and are easily set. They are also displayed in the EVF in the same manner, but I don't adjust them using the evf because I have little feeling or control of my fingers, so I use the touch screen.

What do others use? You can't be wrong on this, its a preference.

Any idea of when a global electronic shutter will come to a digital stills mirrorless camera?

The banding on the EOS R when using silent shutter is extremely disruptive to taking good photos. It's to the point where I barely trust it under any sort of artificial lighting. Sometimes photos that, at first glance on the back of the camera, seem to be ok exhibit subtle banding once I get the chance to look at them up close, effectively ruining the photo.

On rare occasions, even using first curtain electronic shutter (known as mode 1 in the EOS R silent LV shooting) still exhibits banding. Then, turning off electronic first curtain puts twice the wear and tear on the shutter as you would get on a DSLR.

Is there any potential for having a global shutter that reads off the whole sensor at once implemented into a stills camera, or are we still many years out from this? I can't help but feel that the current crop of mirrorless cameras (not just Canon) have a really serious flaw with banding under certain types of artificial lighting. It would be so nice to get to a point where we can just be completely rid of mechanical shutters, but it seems that we're nowhere close to that right now.

PowerShot G1X mark III or G7X mark II for underwater photography?

I'm going scuba diving in May and I'd like to bring a Camera.

Does anybody have any experience - especially with the G1X mark III underwater?
I think the G1X III is an interesting option for UW photography since it's got the large 80D sensor, although the G7X II's lens is supposedly better.

Does anybody have any experience with both the G1X mark III AND the G7X mark II?

How about the Canon WP-DC55 and WP-DC56 underwater housings... Has anybody used them? Are they reliably waterproof?

Firmware: SIGMA updates multiple lenses for EOS R compatibility

From SIGMA:
Thank you for purchasing and using our products. We would like to announce that a new firmware update for SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses for CANON EF mount listed below is now available.
This firmware allows compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function to enable correction matching the optical characteristics of each lens. It also corrects the phenomenon that abnormal images appear or operation errors occur when the function is enabled. In addition, it improves functionality. Furthermore, there is an improvement to the phenomena particular to some lenses when they are used in combination with the Canon “EOS R” and their “Mount Adapter EF-EOS R”, or “Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R”. This was previously reported in our announcement of January 16th, 2019.

For customers who own the SIGMA USB DOCK and applicable products...

24-70 f4 hood discontinued?

On a recent trip I discovered the lock button on my EW-83L lens hood (for 24-70 f4L IS) is broken. The hood still fits on the lens, but it does not lock in place. If I am not careful it will slide off kilter and create a vignette. So just now I went to the Canon USA website to order a replacement hood. There are dozens of hoods for every Canon lens imaginable - except mine! Not there at all. So I went to Adorama - same thing. Why would they discontinue a hood for a lens that is still in production? (At least I think it's still in production).

So I went to Ebay and there were some aftermarket hoods by JJC shipped from Hong Kong for 16.95 plus 3.50 shipping. I checked Samy's in L.A. and they have a Promaster replacement, but it is 49.95 (with maybe or maybe not extra for shipping). So I ordered the one on Ebay and hopefully it will work fine. I will try to update this thread once I receive it.

Patent: Canon EF 10mm f/2.8L USM

A patent application showing the optical formula for an EF 10mm f/2.8 prime lens has been filed in Japan.
Japan Patent Application 2018-233223:

Focal length: 10.30mm
F number: 2.88
The half angle of view: 64.54°
Image height: 21.64mm
Lens length: 124.58mm
Back focus: 38.00mm

It looks like this patent may have been a part of the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM development.

Canon talks IBIS and EOS M in a recent interview

Amateur Photographer had a chance to interview Canon executives at the recent CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan. They touched on the usual things going on in the industry.
Canon also confirms (again) that IBIS is coming to future EOS R camera bodies, as well as saying the EOS M and EF-M will be around for a while. They also didn’t close the door on an APS-C EOS R camera.

You can also likely expect dual card slots on coming EOS R bodies as well. Canon has apparently heard everyone on this issue.
From the interview:
AP: Are you going to keep EOS M in its existing form, or are you going to make a APS-C camera with the RF mount?
YM: That’s a product development for the future so I can’t go into detail, and the market will dictate what sort of direction we should take. If the customers do want a small size, lightweight mount I believe...

A Miracle in Hello

A Miracle in Hello

A Miracle in Hello, tells a story of four troubled high school students from a posh-school whose lives were changed after an unfortunate incident and a classroom brawl that sent them to the Principal’s office and on to the hands of a new and mysterious teacher.

The teacher’s unconventional ways, frowned upon by some, eventually transformed and touched the students’ lives and of those around them. His cool vibe, strong faith, compassion and positive influence started a friendship in the unlikeliest of circumstance.

With this teacher’s guidance and care, friendship grows, so did the students’ faith, understanding and love for one another and for the world. Their renewed spirit were affirmed when they realize the real identity of their mysterious teacher.
