KP3000 - an alternative to high end film scanners

Hi all,

I started goofing around with rephotographing negatives a few months ago, and it lead to this: a kickstarter campaign. Even if it's not in your budget, you might be interested in the results I've been getting with my 5DSr and 100L. Have a look at the video, or just read the text. https://www.kickstarter.com/project...o-high-end-film-scanners?ref=created_projects

Thanks,

RF ultrawide primes (reasonable fantasy list)

I'd love to see (reasonably speaking to keep the price down) an ultra wide to wide prime line. With the RF flange distance and Canon's quest to make new, exciting, and interesting glass, I think the following isn't all that far fetched. Yes faster would be nicer but that would drive the cost and size up considerably. So this is a fantasy lineup which I think is quite possible. We know Canon's done a 20 in EF mount. a 24. and a 28. The latter two with IS. So this seems doable with the new mount with reduced flange distance.

Imagine:

RF 18mm F2.4 IS USM
RF 24mm 2.4 IS USM
RF 28mm 2.4 IS USM

Lets see in the future how well my prediction/fantasy holds out? Out of the above I'd be most interested in the 18.

RP - Now I have one.....

The RP with R 24-105 arrived last night. There are reviews online but some input from run-of-the-mill users might be useful / interesting. While I have not yet done any extreme testing, I wanted to put up some first impressions:

Size - I know it is easy to get dimensions and imagine the camera but it actually seemed larger than I thought it would be. Of course, once I put it next to the 5Div, it is not large. Actually, the 24-105 is what makes it big. Obviously it is not as compact as the M line, but it is FF!

Weight - Same as above comment. Despite the weight of the lens, holding the RP feels well-balanced.

Handling - Without the grip, size is OK in my hands. I can use my DSLR in the dark being quite accustomed to the location of the controls. The RP dials seem to feel just a bit awkward to me in manual mode. Having a dial on top instead of the back is a little clumsy and the front wheel near the shutter button seems to require just a little more bending of my finger. I am betting this will also get to be more comfortable as I continue to use the camera and develop some "muscle memory."

Shutter - There is a lot online about the shutter sound. It does give a re-assuring "thunk" that is a bit more like a hollow sound than a click. To me, the shutter in the standard (not silent) mode is quieter than the 5Div shutter, but that is subjective. I cannot sense any shutter lag worth a concern. There is a slight "blackout" time (when the image is up for review) but I did not yet try to stress the FPS and the only card I had was a UHS-I. I know it will not be as speedy as the DSLR but don't think this will be an issue for me.

Menus - We will all be very comfortable with them. They are like an old friend. There are a few things on the menu I've yet too explore.

Touchscreen - Works just fine. Still trying to figure out which view I like. The histogram in the viewfinder is a nice option.

Focus - Pretty zippy. I have used to touchscreen to move the point around. I've not yet tried facial or eye recognition nor explored alternate ways to move focus points besides the defaults. I will be setting up back-button focus rather than half-shutter-depress focus because I want both of my cameras to behave the same way for me.

IQ - Probably what most of us are interested in. In fairness, all of my shots so far are indoors with existing lighting. At first I shot jpegs and then RAW. My initial feeling is that the IQ is pretty good, and that "high ISO" (up to 12000) seems fine. I have not done any DR stress-testing. What I have tried and viewed is very good. And, I was able to get some reasonable hand-held 1 second exposures so the lens IS must be OK.

Video - I'll be honest, this is not a priority. The output is better than my phone output (would hope so) and for me, that is fine.

I am very curious to hear what others think now that the first orders are arriving in our hands. Overall, this camera is not a replacement for a pro-level DSLR, but it seems awfully good and is, I think, a keeper.

Just ordered the new RF 35 1.8 IS

This lens was overlooked by many apparently, being overshadowed by all the exotic glass that came out for RF mount. At first I got the 40 2.8 pancake but with the adapter the whole setup is as big as a native lens with faster F-Stop AND IS! So I sold the 40 pancake after owning it a day (I've owned it before in the past) and I get my 35 tomorrow. Super excited to have at least one native RF lens for my R. Anyone else have it?

I cannot wait for the RF 50 1.8 IS USM that's supposedly coming out later this year. How much would you guys pay for it? I think it will be $499. Canon needs a reasonable compact 50 prime. A 1.4 would be nice but I don't see that happening...

I am a long time user of the EF 50 1.4. Probably my most used lens throughout my photography experience since 2005. Highest photo count in lightroom. But that lens is nearly useless at 1.4.

I was wrong about FV mode... took me getting used to and now I love it. Can't go back to mode dial...

At first I didn't understand the new "FV" mode. I love the simplicity of a traditional mode dial. But the more I use FV, the more I appreciate it. And now I don't think I could go back.

Basically I go into FV, I rotate the top spin dial around the "mode" button to toggle back and forth between shutter speed and aperture value (depending on which I want to use as priority). The catch is you have to remember to hit DOWN on the 4-way pad to RESET the values as you switch between aperture and shutter priority. Otherwise the values don't change... which is great as well because all that does is mimic manual mode where you can lock BOTH AV and TV settings down. Brilliant. It's a fast way to switch between TV, AV, and manual modes.

You could do that with a dial sure, but a dial would reset all the settings and FV mode gives you the option to keep your settings as you left it on the screen. It's something that becomes apparent the more you use it in various conditions on the fly.

Way to go Canon for this new feature.

The new PL mount CN-E prime lenses that are coming soon are more than just a mount conversion

We reported back in January that Canon was going to release PL-mount versions of its CN-E prime lenses.
We’re now being told that the new PL mount CN-E prime lenses will have some optical differences when compared to the EF mount versions, most notably the footage from the new PL mount versions are noticeably softer and have less contrast than the EF mount versions.
The PL mount prime lenses will also have some subtle design differences.
We expect to see the new PL mount prime lenses announced ahead of NAB next month.

Canon’s Cine Prime Lineup:

CN-E 14mm T3.1 L F
CN-E 20mm T1.5 L F...

Anyone finding non-responsive touch sensor? (and other half-baked EOS R implementations you'd like fixed?)

I set my left side of the touch pad to activate auto-ISO. I'll tap it and nothing happens. I suspect this is what DP Review found when they said they found when the camera meter to be running, touchpad use is disabled. But yet it still lights up as you touch it, indicating you touched it. But just ignores your input/doesn't do the thing you programmed it to do. but then gives no warning it's because it's the meter is running. Just kinda leaves you to figure that out. Kind of frustrating Canon. Seems half baked. Please fix this for firmware 2.

What's stranger is you can actually set the camera to auto iso manually by simply touching "ISO" on the LCD screen at ANY time. but you just can't do it using the touchpad WHILE the meter is running.. really? Why?!

Any other sloppy behaviors you guys notice for this camera?

No way of disabling the warning message when powering EOS R off?

It's so annoying... it delays the shutdown of the camera and I have to wait before I swap lenses (so the sensor cover closes)

I cannot for the life of me find this option in custom settings. So I figure it's hard-baked into the firmware. If so, Canon, please give us the option to disable this stupid warning message. At least the shutter cover should close immediately instead of WAITING for the message to time out on the screen. Seems counter-productive to delay the closing to prevent the very thing the warning message is warning you about!

Any way to store a printer head without it drying out or clogging?

I upgraded from a Canon PRO-1000 to a PRO-4000. I was going to try to sell the 1000, but upon realizing that it uses the same print head as the 4000, and a new print head retails for over $600, I feel like the printer is worth more to me in parts (well, just the print head) than I could probably get for it used.

Is there any way to remove and store a print head without it drying out or clogging so that I could use it in the future if I ever need a spare? Or, is that pretty much impossible. I know that new the print heads come in a sealed bag and have some kind of fluid in them, but I'm thinking there's probably no way to get them back into that state so I could store it for future use.

Canon RF 14-21mm f/1.4L USM one of the “crazy” lenses coming next year [CR1]

Canon has said in various EOS R and RF mount presentations that the RF mount is going to allow them to make some “world’s first” type of lenses. We’ve already seen proof of this in the RF 28-70mm f/2L USM,
We’re told that an RF 14-21mm f/1.4L USM is currently in advanced development and will likely be one of a couple of world’s first lenses coming for the RF mount next year. After speaking with the source, we did confirm that there’s more to this than just a patent published here back in November.
The same source said that a “crazy” prime lens will be coming for the RF mount next year, but that the focal length and speed were unknown at this time.

Review: Canon EOS RP by DPReview

Chris and Jordan at DPReview have completed their review of the Canon EOS RP, a camera they think has a lot of redeeming qualities.
From DPReview TV:
The EOS RP is Canon’s second full-frame mirrorless camera, built around the new RF mount, and comes with an aggressive launch price of $1300. While there are some inevitable compromises to be made at this cost, Chris and Jordan discovered that there’s a lot to like about this pint-sized full-framer.
Order the Canon EOS RP:

Canon EOS RP Body w/EG-E1 Extension Grip & Canon Mount Adapter $1299
Canon EOS RP w/EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, EG-E1 Extension Grip & Canon Mount Adapter $1699...

EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III availability

I contacted Canon USA yesterday regarding the availability of this lens because it is nowhere to be found, it even notes backordered in the Canon store. I guess when they released it in December there must have been two of them???? Anyway, just FYI, they replied today indicating they have no idea when they will be in stock. Really, no idea?? Why did they release a few in December if they weren't ready??

Canon maintenance cartridge chip resetters on ebay

Does anyone have any experience with these little electronic tools they sell on ebay that reset the chips on the maintenance cartridges for the PRO-1000, 2000, 4000, 6000 line of printers?

I just discovered that the cartridge for the big printers is a whopping $90 from Canon. There is no way I'm paying $90 for what is essentially just a plastic box with absorbent felt inside it. The cartridge is also very easily taken apart. If possible, in the future, I'm just going to replace the felt inside and reset the chip.

If the resetters don't work, I'm also wondering if I can just buy a new cartridge for the PRO-1000 (only $15) and swap the chip into the larger cartridge as a way of getting the printer to recognize it as a new cartridge.

I'm all about using genuine Canon ink in such an expensive printer, but spending so much on this silly maintenance cartridge is just ridiculous.

Patent: Apodisation lenses, including the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS

Northlight has uncovered a USPTO patent that showcases various optical formulas for apodization lenses. It appears one of the embodiments fits the recently announced Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS USM.
Other embodiments in this patent include:

Canon RF 35mm f/1.4
Canon RF 28mm f/2.8

We don’t doubt that an L 35mm lens is coming sooner or later for the RF mount.

Canon shows off concept cameras at CP+

The CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan started today and the Canon booth is full of the usual gear, along with some concepts that Canon has shown off in the past and mentioned in their last fiscal reports. The folks at DCWatch decided to show off the concepts.
The concept cameras are for various consumer needs. The first one is the Soto Asobi Camera, which is aimed at the action camera user as it’s waterproof and will survive a 6-foot drop onto concrete. Pricing for these cameras will be around $100.

The Intelligent Compact Camera looks to be similar to Google’s Clip cameras, as it’s designed to shoot automatically. Unlike the clips, this camera has pan and tilt functionality...

Is the 50 1.2 still relevant in 2019?

I am all EF, not moving to RF anytime soon or maybe ever....on a 5D3, if I am a lover of the 'magical' qualities of the 135, will I be happy with this little bomb even with it's idiosyncrasies?

I shoot mostly abstraction, a little portraiture... I love Canon color and love great shallow depth of field. I do not need the fastest AF, I like better than Sigma accuracy...does that make sense?
