Canon to announce an RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS (Defocus Smoothing)

It appears Canon has trademarked “DS” or defocus smoothing and that the feature will appear in an upcoming Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS.
It appears that we’re going to see both an RF 85mm f/1.2L USM and an RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS announced on Thursday.
85dsgraphic.jpg
You can see the “DS” labeling on one of the RF 85mm f/1.2L lenses
What is defocus smoothing? if we had to guess, it’s likely a way to improve the look of out of focus areas or “bokeh”.
Anything that makes an 85mm f/1.2L bokeh even better is going to be pretty awesome.
There have been a lot of patents over the last few years for Canon lenses with apodization filters, which could be related to the Defocus Smoothing we’re seeing here.
That would make RF 6 lenses to be...

500px and Fotolog sites compromised, user data stolen and being sold

Among other sites, 500px and Fotolog has been compromised in July and December 2018 respectively, and user data are being sold by miscreant.

500px is notifying users of the breach, while Fotolog didn't yet, but it could take some time to be notified.

For 500px, the data being sold include the username, email address, MD5-, SHA512- or bcrypt-hashed password, hash salt, [these are password storage techniques] first and last name, and if provided, birthday, gender, and city and country.

For Fotolog, information including email addresses, SHA256-hashed passwords, security questions and answers, full names, locations, interests, and other profile information.

The advice is to change passwords, not only on these sites, but on any site where the same user/password may have been reused, and of course also data like security questions.

EOS R + Speedlite @ F1.8

Hello All,
Could anyone try to replicate my problem with E-TTL??

I'm using bounced flash (580EXII) and if aperture is less than F2.0 (1.8/1.6/1.4) TTL is not metering right and pictures come out VERY dark. Tried with 2 different flash units, tried with all lens faster than F2.0 I'm also using "control" adapter.
So I narrowed it down to:
When the aperture is set to lower than F2.0 then:
- if ISO set to AUTO, then during flash exposure ISO drops dramatically (e.g. from 1600 to 250)
- if ISO set to some value, ISO doesn't drop but exposure is still too dark (flash firing is much weaker)

Basically I cannot get properly exposed shot with flash and aperture lower than F2.0.

- EOS R
- 580 EX II
- Control Ring mount adapter
- Lenses: Sigma 35/1.4 Art / Sigma 50/1.4 / Sigma 85/1.4 << could be miscommunication here?
- Av, Tv, Fv, M modes (basically - doesn't matter)

Canon releases firmware v1.1.0 for the EOS R and it’s disappointing

Update: I hadn’t had any coffee at the time of this post, so I didn’t notice the January 25, 2019 release of this firmware update. What’s interesting is this firmware update hasn’t appeared at Canon USA. This is likely a “calm before the storm” firmware update we alluded to a month or so ago.
A lot of current and possible future Canon EOS R users have been waiting for the promised firmware update for the camera, and version 1.1.0 has arrived and it will surely disappoint a lot of people. The only feature added to the firmware is support for continuous shooting in silent shutter mode. This is a great addition, but it’s also the only addition outside of bug fixes.
We were told a month or so ago that it was possible that a “bug fix” release would come before a major feature firmware...

Please don’t take away the multi function bar!!

I have grown to rely on the multi function bar and am afraid it will be taken away in future Rs. Why is it hated so much? I use it to perfectly dial in kelvin WB and can’t think of a better way to do it. Dialing in camera settings with the R is so easy and joyful.

Also, I also don’t see how a joystick would make selecting AF points faster. I have used the joystick to select AF points on the 5D4 in live view and it is a very slow process. The only way a joystick works well is if you limit the AF points.

I would love to hear why the multi function bar is so terrible and how a joystick would help. I am guessing those who hate the bar don’t have a use for it and usually don’t adjust WB via Kelvin which is understandable.

what equipment is best suited to my needs

Hello! I'm new here ... I hope to get advice to decide what equipment is best suited to my needs.
Briefly, I acquired a Canon 500D + 18-200mm and an 50mm lenses when my eldest son was born. In addition to photographing family events (family reunions, vacation, theater and sporting events), I usually travel on business and, whenever I have time, I dedicate myself to photographing the day-to-day life of people on the streets (day and night).
At this point I would like to jump up and get new equipment. I was thinking of 2 or 3 lenses and later an FF body.
Regarding lenses, the question I have is whether it makes sense to invest in the L EF range with the new RF system being launched?
I look and I thank advice to help me make the best decisions.

Catching up

I've been out of commission for a while with regards to photography. Didn't feel like picking anything up after eye surgery and some limitations in my left eye as a result of it. Trying to get back into it and maybe learn using the other eye. And my daughter just got herself her first real camera for photography and videos (T7i). She did her own research, went back and forth between Canon, Nikon and stuff like Sony and the other mirrorless brands. I really tried to stay neutral and only answered questions best I could. She had access to my 5DII kit before but wanted to start her own with her own money (she's 15 and way more disciplined than I ever was...).
What I found interesting is that she immediately ruled out anything mirrorless, both because of the form factor and the view finders. While hanging out in the local stores a few times with her I had a look at the new R series. I don't get it. What's the purpose of that? Why is Canon introducing yet another line of lenses that are incompatible with previous systems? (I'm one of those who is still mad they abandond the old FD mount, but hey). I hope they don't phase out the regular EF cameras and real cameras.

Home for the 6D Mark II Debate

Because there is a pattern where some of our more important discussions get hijacked by the 6d2-is-fine-or-it's-crap debate, I'm starting this thread so that the issue can be explored more fully and without bringing noise to the other signals.

To start it off, I'll state what I believe to be the rough consensus (hah!), such as it exists...

1- The original 6D was released as a bit of a surprise, as - at the time - full frame cameras were generally much more expensive than its launch price. Also, the sensor was fantastic for its time, especially in low light focus acquisition, beating out the then-up-market 5D3 by some measures.
2- Those two things set up the 6D in the minds of Canon users as positioned as the great-sensor-low-price entry level full frame body. So long as you could tolerate just a handful of focus points. As is most often the case, the users' sense of the 6 series positioning was not - in retrospect - what Canon thought it to be.
3- As often happens, the launch of the 6D2 took a good bit longer than users expected (and perhaps Canon expected). That time factor comes into later arguments, as many users have an expectation that more time translates into better/cheaper roughly in line with what competitors release.
4- At launch, the 6D2 had some improvements, perhaps most notably a tilty-flippy screen and DPAF, but it did not meet the expectations of most Canon users relative to their previous perceptions of the 6 series' positioning. Specifically, they were expecting a sensor as good as the current 5 series, or at least quite a leap from the old one. The 6D2 sensor is indeed better than the original in several ways (DPAF, more mp), but image quality wasn't improved significantly beyond the detail capture possible with more mp and downsampling to the original body's 20 mp size. In short, it didn't surprise and delight, like the first version did.
5- Debate raged about whether or not this was a reasonable upgrade for 5 years of progress. So, of course, the specs of the cameras were less the debate than the individual's perception of what was an appropriate update for 5 years, combined with their impression of what the 6 series positioning was supposed to be.
6- The 6D2 issue becomes a topic on various threads, and seems to act as a bit of a litmus test for a user's skepticism/fanboyism of Canon.

My hope is by having a thread summing up the 6D2's "interpretation" will shine light on that topic and reduce shade thrown on other topics.
By way of example the recent RF low-end body's likely use of the 6D2's sensor (Canon will, of course, claim every sensor is "all new") caused a 150-post thread on an exciting topic to a 450-post thread. I personally think posts referencing the 6D2 in regards to that new RF camera are great for that thread, but rabbit hole discussions on the history and technical qualities of the 6D2 that aren't directly linked to RF discussions would likely be better placed here.

-tig
PS: My own opinion, which isn't really important, is that the 6D2 is a fine camera. I owned one briefly, selling it a few days later due to its price versus autofocus capabilities, and the sensor not being up to par with other Canon full frame offerings, which perhaps, in retrospect, was an unreasonable hope. Some 6D2 defenders don't agree or acknowledge that the positioning of the 6 series sank with the Mark II in terms of relative value, which seems to enrage people more critical of the Mark II. I perceive that both sides can be acting completely reasonably, just with different initial expectations, and accusations of trolling are almost always incorrect.

Samyang to expand their autofocus lens selection for Canon ahead of CP+

Samyang will be announcing a few new autofocus lenses for the Canon EF mount ahead of CP+ which begins on February 28, 2019. Currently, Samyang offers two autofocus lenses for Canon, the AF 14mm f/2.8 and the AF 85mm f/1.4.
If we had to guess as to what autofocus lenses were coming next from Samyang, I’d say 35mm and 50mm lenses would make a lot of sense and maybe even a 135mm lens.

The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III seems to be getting closer

What appears to be the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III has passed FCC certification.
Not much in the way of specifications have leaked out in the FCC filing. However, a few things have such as size and information about the Bluetooth module inside the camera.
Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III Information:

Size: 105mm (W) x 60.85mm (H) x 43.2mm (D)
Bluetooth: WM 601 / Bluetooth 4.2

I think it’s likely we’re going to see the PowerShot G7 X Mark III announced ahead of CP+, which begins on February 28, 2019.

Canon's PRO-2000 and 4000 printers are really cheap right now

Just a heads up, B+H is running big sales on the PRO-2000 and 4000 right now. I've had my eye on them for a while, and this is about the cheapest they get. They haven't been running these prices since before the holdays. $2200 for the PRO-2000, and $3200 for the PRO-4000. And free shipping, which is no joke when you're talking about a 270lb printer.

Patent: Lots of super telephoto lenses mentioned

Canon’s work on super telephoto lenses continues, and we expect to see a few more announced next year ahead of the Summer Olympics which take place in Tokyo, Japan.
Canon’s latest super telephoto lenses the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM and EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM are the lightest such lenses currently available and have begun shipping in small numbers.

Patent: Canon in body image stabilization (IBIS)

Northlight Images has uncovered a USPTO patent that shows Canon is hard at work at in body image stabilization (IBIS).
This particular patent deals with the challenges associated with a moving sensor (IBIS) and sensor-based autofocus.
We’ve been told that we’ll see IBIS come to the 3rd EOS R system camera later in 2019 or early 2020.

Image quality & 6D

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my camera and the only feature I really am after is IMAGE QUALITY. No 100 fps or iso 1mil..
I only ever have used a 5D classic and a 6D, the 6D does produce nice files but I also have never used a +30mp camera. I shoot landscape and I do portraits and a few weddings a year.
With that said, would the 6D2, 5D3 give better images?
I know glass plays a big part and i shoot A LOT with the 135 f2 and love it. Do I just have gas or what's up?

Canon EOS RP Specifications & Images

We’ve returned to the 26.2mp sensor in the EOS RP

Update: Here’s an updated specification list for the Canon EOS RP.
Our previous list of specifications for the Canon EOS RP mentioned an all-new 24mp sensor, which was a new bit of information, as certification agencies had previously mentioned a 26.2mp sensor for a full frame mirrorless camera.
Nokishita reports that “K433” is the Canon EOS RP and will have a 26.2mp image sensor, which would likely be recycled from the EOS 6D Mark II.

Canon “EOS RP” (Model ID K433)

SKU: 3380C001
Radio wave authentication DS126751.
Comes with: RF 24-105mm USM kit
