Canon RF 35mm review by photographyblog

From conclusion:

With a full retail price of £519 / €519 / $499, the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is something of a no-brainer in the value for money department. It certainly fits the bill as a versatile, fast and affordable wide-angle prime lens that certainly delivers the goods on the new Canon EOS R.

Shooting with the predecessors...What older Canon lenses do you still love?

I've done a fair amount of selling to buy when it comes to glass over the past 19 years but the one lens that has stayed in my kit is my first 'L' lens, the 70-200 f/4L. There's nothing wrong with it, it is sharp, great contrast, light and dependable. In fact if I don't need too wide, that and the pancake are a great lightweight two lens combo.

How about anyone else? What oldies but goodies do you use?

*EDIT* I guess I should have clarified that when I typed 'predecessors', I meant lenses which have had upgrades such as IS added or versions ll and lll. My thought being that some folks upgrade so quickly when there's a product announcement, it never meant your old gear stopped working....

Is Canon Refurbished Worth the Price?

I'm looking into buying a refurbished camera (a 6dM2) direct from Canon, and I'm seeing that the refurbished prices are only a few hundred less than new. I would like to put that extra savings towards a new lens, but since I don't have a lot of money, I also want to be sure my camera isn't going to be a regretful purchase and will last a long time (would prefer a 5dM4 but don't have the cash). I've looked here for threads on this and have seen a few comments that seem to indicate refurbished is a good bargain, but I would like to hear more from those of you who went this way. Would I be smart to go ahead and buy new? Thanks in advance.

Canon to partner with GoPro in some capacity? [CR0]

Back in November, we were told by an unknown source that Canon and GoPro were working on a partnership, we dismissed it a viable rumor and didn’t bother posting about it on this site.
Other sites have started to post about a Canon & GoPro partnership. So we figured we’d also address it, as readers have already started emailing us about this.
The original source told us the following:
Canon will sign a cooperation deal with GoPro. They are interested in the digital image stabilisation and video capabilities of 4K without a crop. GoPro will profit by getting the Canon colour science and undisclosed other key technologies
Canon doesn’t seem to be a company that is much into these types of partnerships, and with GoPro being for sale, it seems like an acquisition Canon could make quite easily if there was a business case for it.
Stranger things have happened, but be mindful of the...

Kickstarter: New Startup Launches World’s First Titanium Tripod & Ballhead

New York — A new startup – Colorado Tripod Company – today announced the world’s first titanium tripod and ballhead. “Although the process of extracting titanium from its ore is costly, designers consider it valuable enough for specialty applications such as aerospace, where its combination of strength-to-weight and corrosion resistance is unrivalled.” says mechanical engineer Nikki Gantos.

Patent: Canon RF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM

Canon’s new RF mount is going to be at the forefront of R&D going forward, and that should bring us a lot of optical formula patents for new RF lenses.
A new patent application shows Canon possibility bringing the 24-70mm f/4L IS to the RF mount.
Canon RF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM:
Focal Length: 24.71 – 39.93 – 67.99
F-number: 4.12 – 4.12 – 4.12
Half Angle of Field: 41.20 – 28.45 – 17.65
Image Height: 21.64 – 21.64 – 21.64
Overall Lens Length: 99.36 – 108.69- 132.25
BF: 13.50 – 24.36 – 42.60
We wouldn’t be surprised to see this come in the form of a kit lens for future EOS R cameras.

Calibrated display, still doesn't seem to match output from printer

I got a Spyder 5 display calibrator and used it with the Display Cal software since most people seemed to say that worked best with it. After calibrating the display, it does not seem to match how my prints look coming out of my Canon PRO-1000 printer. The prints look more contrasty, a little darker overall, and the colors are not quite a match. I thought the idea was that if the display was calibrated, it should match the output I should be getting from a good printer.

I'm using my Macbook Pro's display, and letting the printer manage the colors via the settings in Photoshop since I've been using Canon's Pro Luster paper for the recent prints I've done. (When using Canon paper, it seems like the only option is to set it so the printer manages the colors, as there are selections in the printer, but Canon does not seem to offer downloadable ICC profiles for its own paper.) What else can I do to get my display to better match what comes out of my printer?

Canon continues to outsell everyone in the full frame segment according to BCN

BCN has released their sales numbers for the last 12 months in Japan for the full frame camera segment, and it looks like Canon continues to be #1 in market share.
We noticed a couple of stories last week claiming that Sony had taken over the crown as the best selling full frame camera manufacturer based on BCNs numbers, but that’s not the case whatsoever.
Canon News brown down the numbers for the rolling year, the total market share in full frame for the big 3 over the last 12 months is:

Canon 39%
Nikon 30%
Sony 29%

We’re not sure how these numbers have been skewed in Sony’s favour over both Canon and Nikon.
If we further examine the full frame space over the last 12 months, we know that Canon has only released one new full frame camera, and that would be the EOS R. At the time of these numbers being calculated, the EOS R had only been shipping for a week and the Nikon Z6 had not begun...

We’ve added a dark theme to canonrumors.com

Just a brief update about the site. We have added a new “light theme/dark theme” toggle at the top right of the website. Many tablet and phone-based readers have requested this, and we finally got around to having it completed. This will work on both the desktop and mobile versions of the site.
There may be some tweaks to the dark theme in the coming days.
We are working on some other new features for the site, but don’t expect any further changes until the new year.

Canon to showcase 8K products at NAB 2019, and bring 8K plans into clearer focus

NAB 2019 takes place in April of 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show generally showcases the Cinema EOS lineup, but very rarely the stills camera products, outside of the EOS-1D C from many years ago.
We’re told that Canon will be showcasing the advances in its 8K offerings for the trade show, though no 8K products are going to be “officially announced” until later in 2019. Canon has shown off their 8K offerings at the Canon EXPO in 2015, as well as at NAB 2016 & NAB 2017. However, the NAB 2019 show will bring us a clearer picture of Canon’s plans we’re told.
We have been told that the follow-up to the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II will have an 8K option of some kind, but not to expect the camera until late 2019 at the earliest.
Canon has admitted in the past that they were late to the 4K revolution and that they wouldn’t make the same mistake when it comes to 8K. We expect to...

F2 135mm prime tapping out in AF in dark room?

Hey gang,

I usually shoot the R (and previously the 5D3) at a local bar with musicians, iso 800-1600, f4 shutter 160 with a F2.8 24-70 MK2. Rarely have AF lock issues. Swapped it out with a faster F2 135 for a few shots, switching to F2 for DOF. Same location and subject as my f2.8 24-72. The R was having problems locking, flaying everywhere! IT was a faster lens than my 24-70 and yet it had problems locking the same subject, same location.

Any ideas or similar experience? thanks peeps!

canon st-e3 rt and speed light 600 basic flash compensation question

Hey gang,

sorry for the basic noob-sounding question. Had a flash compensation brain fail so I figure let me hit up the group:

I shoot new Canon R (Formally on 5d3) with the remote canon st-e3-rt controlling 5 canon 600 EX-RT mark1 speedlights.

Camera is on manual, F4, 160 shutter, iso 800.. shooting musicians in a bar. Flashes are dialed in manual each, 1/8 tp 1/16 power, all with a light meter, groups A-E individually. Lens is at F4, its a f2.8 24-70.

On occasion, a solo singer goes up, I can get closer, and I'd like to switch to ether the F2 135 of f1.4 50... so in other words, keep the camera at 160, iso 800 (Since the ambient is dailed in) but the lens at f1.4 to get the DOF.

I would like to gang the speed lights down 3 stops to f1.4. I hit the +/_ on the speed light remote thinking I'm taking the various group A-E (all manually dialed in) down 3 stops and nothing! No change!

This is what I got from the electronic manual:

GR — GROUP MODE: DIFFERENT FLASH MODE FOR EACH GROUP
The mode is available only on EOS cameras released since 2012 (such as the EOS-1D X, EOS 5D Mark III, EOS 6D, and Rebel T4i). GR mode is best suited to advanced photographers who have experience in multiple flash lighting. You can set a different flash mode for each firing group, up to a maximum of five groups (A/B/C/D/E). The available modes include:
• ETTL / ETTL II
• Manual
• Auto external flash metering
1. Perform the initial flash setup described above.
2. Press the ST-E3-RT’s MODE button until <Gr> appears in the upper-left of the LCD panel.
3. Assign each receiver unit to a firing group (A, B, C, D, or E).
4. Set the flash mode for each firing group on the sender unit.
a. While <MENU 1> shows on the LCD, press Fn Button 3 <GR>, then turn the Select Dial to highlight a group.
b. Press Fn Button 2 <* MODE>. Each press selects a flash mode (E-TTL, M, or Ext.A> for that receiver group.
c. Repeat step b to set the flash mode for each additional group.
5. Set the flash output or flash exposure compensation amount.
a. While a firing group is selected, press Fn Button 3 <* ±> to highlight the analog scale for flash exposure compensation (E-TTL or Ext.A modes) or manual flash power (M mode).
b. Turn the Select Dial to adjust the flash exposure scale that corresponds to the flash mode, then press the Select/Set Button.

c. If you press Fn Button 2 <* ±> when <Menu 1> is on the LCD, you can set flash exposure compensation for all firing groups (E-TTL and Ext.A only).
d. Repeat to set the flash function of any remaining groups
e. Press Fn Button 4 to return to the shoot-ready state.

I highlighted in Red what I think my problem is: I have to be in ETTL or Ext.A only.

I'm in Manual.

Since each flash has a discreet power setting, it breaks the heart that you can't "Gang" them together and take the group down 3 stops. I would have to individually take them down.

Again, the ambient light is dialed in to be under espoused by over a stop using the shutter and iso. I use the F stop for DOF, F4 giving me a good wide group DOF at 24mm but also good isolation ability at 70mm. Pity that when I swap to the F1.4 prime for DOF that I can't do a global adjustment.

The only thing I can think of is taking the iso down 3 stops from 800 to 100, thus reducing the camera's sensitivity but that keeps the light ratio the same.

Any thoughts? thanks!

EOS R USB-C charging from MacBook Pro is possible

I had seen that it was possible to charge the EOS R from a USB-C powerbank (see Amanda Woolsey on YouTube), but hadn't seen anywhere that showed that you could charge the EOS R from a MacBook Pro's USB-C port. Apologies if this is already known, but I didn't see it in any Google searches.

I connected my camera to download photos, then turned it off while still connected and the charging symbol appeared. See Login to view embedded media
I'm pretty happy with this, because it allows me to travel even lighter - no battery charger or other adapter. Shoot during the day, charge overnight, which is a common usage scenario for me.

EDIT: P13 of this says that you shouldn't https://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/EOS-R-PDF-Specifications.pdf , but many of the resources I've seen said you couldn't charge in another way. Having it plugged in via USB-C to a computer, though, is a pretty thing to do, so I wonder what will happen? I'll keep an eye out for problems and report back if I find any.

Photokina 2019 scheduled for May has been cancelled, show to return annually May 2020

The next photokina will take place in May 2020
Imaging industry and Koelnmesse decide on a new starting point for the new annual cycle
Following a successful photokina 2018, the German Photo Industry Association (PIV), as conceptual sponsor of the trade fair, and the event’s organiser Koelnmesse have agreed not to organise the next leading global trade fair in May 2019, as initially planned, but in May 2020. From Wednesday 27 May 2020 to Saturday 30 May 2020, all the market leaders in the imaging industry are expected once again in Cologne. The decision to postpone the start of the announced annual cycle by one year is intended to give all participants the opportunity to further develop the new concept for photokina and to tap into new target groups among exhibitors and visitors in order to heighten the status of the trade fair as a global platform for the photography and imaging industry.

“photokina 2018 clearly exceeded our already optimistic expectations with...

A Traitor in you midst

I have to confess that as of right now I am a N**** shooter!

But before you put me up against the wall please hear me out and possibly help me.

I currently have a D7100 DX (crop sensor) and want to upgrade to full frame.

I do not have any real money invested in the N**** full frame lenses so a switch to either brand is a possibility. Obviously before I pull the trigger I want to be sure I am doing the right thing. At age 63 this will probably be my last purchase.

Because both companies are new to mirrorless I am reluctant to be one of their guinea pigs and have decided to stay with DSLR versions.

I know a little bit about Canon, more about N*****, and so far the 5D MK IV looks the business.
What I would like to know is what Canon models are current?

My preferred genre is portraits but I also love landscapes and do a bit of wild life, the odd bit of street and generally muck about.

TIA
Lawrence
