R Backup

I have the R and love it. It is far superior than my 5D4 and even better than my 1DX mark 2. I am a wedding photographer and currently use the R and my 5D4 simultaneously. I thought the 5D4 would have 3/4 of the work and the R would just complement. However, every single time I pick up the 5D4 I feel like it is so slow and clumsy. I want to use the R a majority of the time but the single card slot gets to me. I have tried a few things to get a backup and the both haven't worked as well as I would like.

I have tried to wirelessly tether the R to my iPhone using the Camera Connect app but it quickly drains my iPhone and the R with the constant syncing. Sometimes a button gets pressed on my phone and tethering stops and I have to reconnect the camera and it isn't always convenient. I know some have gotten this solution to work so maybe I'll give it another go.

I also bought a my passport pro and tried to backup up my sd card throughout the day. I would shoot with one for a while and then switch. I think I shoot too much for this because it took a really long time to transfer photos and I didn't even make it thought a whole day before the passport pro died. It is supposed to last for 10 hours. Also, there ended up being one card that would not copy for some reason.

I am now feeling like I would need to bring my MacBook Pro with an SD card reader to get something to work quickly and consistently. I thought about a SD card reader for my iPhone but I don't have enough room for RAW files and I think RAW files take a while to transfer to an iPhone. I shoot RAW+JPEG and I wish only the JPEGs would transfer but I don't want to manually select all of the images.

Does anyone have any ideas that I could try. I really need to make this work and a frustrated there are no dual card slots on the R. It is such a good camera otherwise.

The first RF mount super telephoto lens will be a DO lens [CR2]

A few weeks ago we mentioned that new DO lenses were on the way, but that they would be for the RF mount and not the EF mount.
We’re now receiving more information from other places suggesting that this is going to be the case. We’re told that the “first true super telephoto lens for the RF mount will be a diffractive optics lens”.
The same source also mentioned that an RF 300mm f/2.8L IS was currently in development, but not anywhere close to becoming a consumer product.
While we weren’t told what the focal length for the first RF mount DO lens would be, we’d wager on a 500mm lens is a good place to start for the EOS R system.
Currently, the lightest super telephoto lens for your Canon EOS R camera is the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II.
We are being flooded with a lot of RF mount lens “rumors” at the moment, so...

Patent: Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM II

Canon continues to submit patent applications for an improved EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. The current version is inconsistent at best, some people get a great copy, but more often than not,  one gets a poor copy.
This new design seems to use 12 elements instead of the 10 in the current design. The patent also touches on improved AF performance from the EOS M kit lens.

Japan Patent Application 2018169618:
The zoom lens used for an imaging device is a wide field angle, and the whole lens system’s being small and a focus lens group can perform focusing at high speed by a small light weight, and, moreover, it is strongly requested on the occasion of focusing that there are few aberration variations etc. In order to make a focus lens group into a small light weight, it is necessary to lessen the composed lens number of sheets of a focus lens group. However, when the composed lens number of sheets of a focus lens group is lessened, the residual aberration of a focus lens group...

wish list for bodies in 2019

I would like to see

1. 5D M5 to go head to head with the D850.

2.7D M3 with much improved AF tracking (matching 1Dx M2)

3. 1Dx M3 (28-30MP, 14 FPS - same buffer speed as the D850)

Probabilities of these

1. Extremely low as described
2. Low
3. non-existent

In other I don't expect to any of these bodies replaced in 2019.

In fact not sure if any of these bodies will be replaced next year though the 7D M2 and 5D M4 are showing their age.

Thoughts?

Any interviews about Canon's commitment to DSLR and EF mount in the future?

Hi,

I was wondering if in some recent interviews Canon stated that they will absolutely stay committed to DSLR and EF mount in the future.
I know that Nikon made such a statement when they released their Z6/Z7 cameras. But what about Canon? I'm definitely no into mirrorless market.

Any links or interviews that you could share about this? Thanks.

back button AF on EOS R

There is a post in the "rumors" section that when you use back button AF on the R to focus and recompose, the camera will try to refocus after you recompose! Can any R owners comment on this?

I would think that as long as you are in one shot AF mode as opposed to servo, once you lock focus that focus point would hold unless you refocus. I cannot imagine it would refocus on whatever it chooses if you recompose.

I have an M5, and it works just like a DSLR, ie. you can focus and recompose without your selected focus point being over ridden.

Also, is the IS always on when the camera is on, or does it only work when you half push the shutter like on a DSLR? I would hope its not always on....I suspect that would obviously be bad for battery life and also be hard on the AI system in the lens with time.

Thanks for any info, as I am likely going to go ahead and get an R and just want to make sure this is not an issue, since I focus and recompose all the time!

Buy EF Telephoto Now or Wait for RF Telephoto?

Hello,

I am new to the forum. I recently purchased a Canon EOS R with the 24-105 lens. I really like it. It is currently the only camera gear I own. However, I am also interested in acquiring a telephoto lens sometime in the future. I am likely interested in a 70-200 F2.8 or more likely a 100-400 F4-5.6. Do you think I should purchase one of the EF lenses and use an adaptor, or try to "wait it out" for an RF version?

I am happy to wait a little while, but if it takes like 5 years, I don't want to wait that long. I also would like to use an extender (1.4 probably), so I don't know if it would be good to use my EOS R + EF adaptor + extender + 100-400 telephoto.

I'd appreciate your thoughts. I know we don't know what RF lenses canon plans to release in the next few years.

Patent: Canon RF 14-21mm f/1.4L, yes…. f/1.4

Canon News has uncovered a patent for a new super wide angle RF mount zoom and it looks extremely impressive.
US Patent Application 20180314060 shows an optical formula for an RF 14-21mm f/1.4L. That’s correct… f/1.4!
Both Canon News and I had to read the patent multiple times to make sure we weren’t reading it incorrectly. If Canon wants to do these “look what we can do lenses”, I have no issue just letting them do their thing.
This patent also mentions optical formulas for an RF 16-35mm f/2.8L and an RF 12-20mm f/2L

- spotmetering with AF-point
- exposure compensation till -5 to +5 (now -3 to +3)

Canon 7D II Error 20

Err 20
Description: A malfunction with the mechanical mechanism has been detected.
Resolution: Turn the power off, then remove and re-install the battery. Then turn the power on again.

Hi
Last saturday doing sports photography my 7DII started intermittingly showing Err 20. I did power off and remove and re-install the battery but it occurred a few times.
I didn't find too much detail on the internet - mainly about the 7D.
It seems it could be the mirror box malfunctioning.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this error.
Is it the sort of error that becomes more and more common making the camera inoperable.
I still managed to take about 3000 photos so its not completely broken.

I don't know the shutter count but I'd expect its high.
It's led a busy life (even if I wasn't its biggest fan to begin with - once I accepted its limitations it was a workhorse)

I'm not sure whether to flog it to death or get it repaired.
Have I nothing to lose in flogging it to death at this stage - would I be causing any more damage from a cost of repair perspective.
I'm not sure then whether to get it repaired or not or replace it with something else.
Before mirrorless arrived the ideal replacement (expensive ) would be the 1DX II or another 7DII

Review: Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for the Canon EOS R system.
Compared to the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II, Bryan found the RF version to be slightly sharper with less linear distortion, but it did show a bit more vignetting.
The RF 24-105mm f/4L IS appears is a great option for an all-purpose lens for your EOS R, especially if you want the native mount.
With this lens, you get an ultra-useful focal length range in a lens sized for comfortable long-term use without creativity-killing fatigue. This lens smoothly focuses very fast with consistently excellent accuracy and the image quality is great with 5-stop image stabilization helping to maintain that desired quality. This lens is well-built, including weather sealing, and is ready for professional-duty use, but it does not cost a fortune. Read the full review
