Canon officially announces the Canon EOS R system

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 5, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the next revolution in the company’s long history of innovative and award-winning camera systems, the EOS R system featuring the newly designed RF mount. Recognizing the need to advance optical design, the Company sought to create a versatile and powerful new system that supports all current EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lensesi, and also provides the optical advancements and engineering flexibility to build upon for years to come.

When Canon set forth to develop a new interchangeable lens camera system, they focused on three core optical principles: high-image quality, high-specification performance, and compact design. Recognizing that optics is the foundation for any camera system, the RF mount was conceived to open new doors in optical design. Canon’s new RF mount features the same size diameter as the EF mount (54mm) and shorter back focus distance. This allows for lenses...

Opinion: Changing Canon camera lens mounts. How might the RF mount affect you?

Keith over at Northlight Images, always a voice of reason has written an opinion piece about Canon’s new RF mount and how it might affect Canon going forward. He also addressed EOS M and the EF-M mount.
From Northlight Images:
We’re all doomed – or not
Already I’m seeing articles and comments about Canon’s move to the RF mount that are not even wrong in their level of their cluelessness about optics and the camera market(s) around the world.
The sky is not falling – perhaps some context and history will help.  In a few years all will be well, but probably better ;-)
Canon lens mounts – A brief history
Canon changes lens mounts and systems – some people are left behind, some move on.  With the new RF mount, there are many questions as to what it means for different categories of Canon camera user. This note aims to show a bit of historical context for the change – noting that past changes didn’t have the echo chamber of the internet to contend with…
I’ll mention some of the...

Canon M series price drop??

I have to wonder how the R line of FF cameras will impact the existent M line, especially the market for used ones. Think I will follow M50 body and lenses on Ebay for the next several days and see if any kind of pattern develops on new listings. Of course, we still don't know when the new cameras will start shipping yet. That may be the important influence here.

Black Bears at Neets Bay Alaska Aug 2018

Just a few shots I took a couple of weeks ago in Neets Bay Alaska, There is a fish hatchery in Neets Bay and next to it is a stream that feeds some of the Salmon upstream. Well as we all know Bears are pretty smart as to where to find dinner and just to chill out

EOS R Size Referenced Against Other Cameras

I got really bored and still think this is all an elaborate hoax...but after spending time in Photoshop, the scales are spot-on and I really believe this is at least a real camera now.

The EOS R most closely resembles the 77D in terms of both size and weight. I own a 77D and have been surprised by the grip being so comfortable, but I can't help but think the camera feels cramped. When I ended up throwing these images into PS, I realized a VERY important ergonomic design similarity with the 5D Mark IV...look at the location of the grip/shutter in relation to the lens mount and viewfinder - it's nearly identical to the 5D while the 77D, which is similar in sized, is much tighter. This should contribute to a much better feel in the hands. The grip is DEEPER than the 5D, 77D, and the A7III. The size of the top information LCD is roughly the same height as the current 5D's screen, but 1/3 the width.

Look at the A7III and the EOS R distance from the lens mount to the grip. A major complaint I had with the A7 series was that my knuckles always hit the lens. The ergonomic layout of this camera looks to be very comfortable to shoot. I look forward to getting one in my hands to try out. Hopefully this is just the entry level model, because I would really like to add a dual-card full-frame mirrorless into bag. (yes, I want dual cards if it's going to replace my 5D4.

Enjoy!

Opinion: Canon is causing its own problems with the RF mount

Richard over at Canon News has written an opinion piece about the new Canon RF mount and what it means for the Canon ecosystem. He feels, as others do, that the EOS M system and EF-M mount are surrounded with some uncertainty.
From Canon News:
Canon this September 5th is releasing the RF mount for full frame mirrorless.  This mount by all reports is 54mm in diameter for the inner throat diameter and 20mm in depth.  While this mount by itself sounds good, it has long term negative ramifications on the EOS system over time, that has us surprised they are doing this unless there are tectonic shifts in direction throughout Canon’s lineup.
The problem with this new mount, is not what you can do with it, but what you can’t do with it.  Canon in 2012 created a new mount for APS-C mirrorless called the EF-M mount.  It has a 46mm throat diameter and a 18mm registration distance.  Because of the difference in between the two mount registration distances (the distance between the...

Canon RF lens size comparison when mounted to the Canon EOS R body

Canon Rumors reader InsungFilms did up a good comparison showing the size differences between the RF lenses when mounted to the Canon EOS R body.
The RF 28-70mm f/2L USM is obviously the biggest of the bunch, but we’re also surprised at the size of the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM, it looks like an impressive chunk of glass.
Also included for reference is an EOS DSLR and the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS.

crop sensor wide angle upgrade options

Currently have a Tokina 12-24mm F4 X-Pro II ultra wide zoom. While it suits my needs very well for the range, it suffers a lot from distortion and softness away from the centre. I don't use it a lot (last use was November 2017) but I'm thinking of upgrading it to something with better performance.
I would be looking to spend no more than £700 which is part funded by selling the Tokina. But I'm struggling to find options that are both good and within my budget.
Have a 24mm pancake and 24-105L which I like, but aren't wide enough when I want to go really wide.
Prefer a zoom, but open to prime. Must have AF.
Will be used on 7D mkII.
Don't mind going for 3rd party manufacturer, so long as it is an upgrade and reliable/consistent.
I would like ot try some more night shooting, so F2.8 would appeal to me.

Have seen Tamron 15-30mm but read AF can be a bit temperamental, but the loss of 3mm while it doesn't sound like much, does make the field of view a lot narrower on the wide end.
Tokina have one or two lenses, but they are very heavy and I have always felt the clutch AF-MF mechanism moves where the focus is set slightly, at least, I have less confidence in it than my other lenses with a simple switch.

Any ideas? Thank you :)

Wide angle lens comparison.

Tonight I did a comparison between 8 different wide angle lenses. The only adjustment I made was for white balance and size. There are no distortion corrections. All lenses were focused manually, so we can expect some margin of error there. The unexpected disappointment was the Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 and it's flair. All the Takumars had a hood. Nothing else had a hood except the two modern Canon L lenses. For colors? They all looked the same to me. Some had some CA. As expected, my Canon L glass gave the best results... but it should. There was a little flair with the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II at 28mm, but that is due to the way the light on the wall is right at the edge of the frame. The take away from this is that most all lenses are sharp in the center at f/8. Not a surprise. Also, without interference from bright sunlight, they all do well color and flair wise. I would imagine a hood on the Vivitar would take care of the problem. Keep in mind that these are 30 second exposures at night, so don't get too excited about the vintage lens results looking so good against the modern Canon lenses. Daylight reveals much higher variation. Much higher. I will conduct the same test in harsh sunlight in a few days. I predict drastically different results. I'll make sure every lens is has a hood for that test. If you are not using hoods, I recommend that you do. Full resolution photos are found here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/135571631@N08/?
