We sent this information out last Friday in our newsletter with some hopes of further confirming the following information. We know a couple of additional things that we cannot publish at this time.

Canon was the quietest it has ever been at CES if my memory services me correctly. Though they did show some neat concept cameras.

We didn’t get a PowerShot announcement for CES 2018, which wasn’t all that surprising. Cameras tend to get lost in technology that will never reach market and televisions.

We expect two rounds of announcements ahead of CP+ 2018, which begins on March 1, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan.

What’s coming?

Canon EOS M50

New Entry Level Rebel(s)

At least two new lenses

At least one new PowerShot G series camera

We haven’t heard if the EOS 90D will be announced.

No EOS 7D Mark III Announcement.

What I have found odd is the EOS M50 being called the “Kiss M” in certification. I don’t recall any other EOS M camera getting the KISS designation in Japan. It could be something, it’s probably nothing.

Three new Rebels? Color me surprised there. Sales of Rebel cameras have been hit the hardest in the DSLR decline, adding more sku’s to boost sales?

We’re not sure which two lenses are coming at this time, but we’re 99% sure we’re getting at least two in the first quarter of 2018.

There has been nothing about an EOS 90D, though this is a show they have announced predecessors in the xxD lineup. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a new APS-C shooter. The 80D sold very well and Canon would be well served to update it.

The EOS 7D Mark III is not coming for this show.

What glass is rumored/expected? I like many others, would gladly welcome the continuation of the 24/28/35 IS (non L) line, extending to 50/85/135.

+1

Canon badly needs to update their better 50mm options in particular. A 50 1.4 IS to match the 24/28/35 IS would be great. My only regret with those is they didn’t get weather sealing, but hey.

A 50 1.2 mkii seems due also, Canon are behind competitors in this regard now.

But yeah, basically I’d love the IS line to continue upwards too - very nice compromises between optical performance, size and weight - great primes for travel and landscape.

Potentially, that's a very big deal.

If mirrorless is going to retire almost all of the SLRs someday (other than the most demanding product lines), an 'overlap generation' like a Rebel SLR and Rebel mirrorless sold side by side makes a ton of sense. This overlap approach would be a logical place to proceduralize major product line retirements, i.e. mirrorless would steadily climb up the SLR portfolio and the next gen of that product line would be mirrorless only. They could steadily do this from he super budget 1300D --> the main Rebel line --> XXD --> 7D/6D lines --> 5D --> and then the only SLRs left might be 1-series.

Don't get me wrong, this would take 10+ years to completely pull off, but this could be the first step of that process.

+1. CR Guy, any read on this?

I'm wracking my brain thinking of what forgotten albatross will be announced instead of a new 50 prime. My money is on 2018 being The Return of Softfocus.

With those lenses not being L Class, I do not expect weather sealing and considering the added cost associated with such sealing, I believe they are priced appropriately. Personally I look at longer standard primes in that lineup as great possibilities for indoor sports. Carrying whatever variant of 70-200 can be weight and size overkill. Give me a great 85/135 around the size of the 85 1.8 and the not much bigger than the 100 f/2 and I'd be in heaven.

It will be interesting to know how Canon is going to differentiate those three entry level DSLRs... with or without wifi/blueetoth? GPS? Or some other feature?

I hope for some higher-end EF-M lenses, maybe primes, the so-so lens lineup is what stopped me from buying an M5. And maybe at this point I'll wait for an M5 Mk II anyway, I'm not in a hurry...

Anyway I will be happy if one lens is a plain, simple EF 50mm, just to quieten a forum member ;)

Agreed. When I read this, my biggest question is what mount? To overlap, I assume we are talking about an EFS/EF mount Rebel M. Not an EF-m mount.

I would argue the M5 is already a M mount equivalent to a Rebel. So, this could be "big news." The first EF mount mirrorless camera from Canon. Not surprisingly, it would and APS-C sensor.

"Big News" is in quotes as it is big news for those that really care about mirrorless....still "meh" for everyone else. :p

that theory was debunked the first time this came up. it's shipping with EF-M lenses, so it's not some type of crossover system.

A new mid-range 50mm seems appropriate since the STM and 1.2 are both selling very strongly, while the 1.4 has dropped off a touch. A refresh to either the 85mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2, or 135mm f/2 seems likely this year, as well, though CP+ might be a bit too early in the year for those.

It's a long shot, but every now and then I remember how outdated the 20mm f/2.8 is, and how there really isn't any kind of more modern version. With the current trend toward wider and wider focal lengths, I wouldn't be surprised to see that updated sometime either this year or next.

(Personally I'm eternally hoping for a 28mm f/1.4, but I get the impression 28mm just isn't trendy enough for Canon to give one the f/1.4 treatment.)

Weather sealing costs pennies and there's no reason for it to not be a part of every lens. Just look at Tamron. The Tamron 45mm is roughly the same price as canon's 50mm f/1.4, in most countries—and even in the countries where it isn't, it's a helluva lot cheaper than the Canon 50mm f/1.2 and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4—and it's fully weather sealed. It's got nice metal filter threads, too, not the polycarb plastic Canon uses even on most of the L lenses.

There is absolutely nothing stopping every lens being weather sealed, and the whole notion of "L class" is ridiculous in an age where third parties are making sharper/tougher/more refined lenses for often nearly half the cost of the Canon equivalents.

Give me a great 85/135 around the size of the 85 1.8 and the not much bigger than the 100 f/2 and I'd be in heaven.
You can't cheat physics. If you want it to be the size of the 90s 85 & 100... then it's going to be just like the 90s 85 and 100. If you want something which performs like a higher-end 85, let alone a 135, then it's also going to have to be the size of a higher-end 85 or 135.

Where is the update to 50mm Compact macro or 180mm Macro? I can understand why canon is delaying updating 180mm as it is a specialist lens but why not update that short tele macro lens? There are rumors of Nikon already updating their AF-S 60mm Macro with new upgrades and its quite baffling why Canon is neglecting that lens.
