1DX - very slight vertical play

I've noticed my 70-200 is slightly loose on my 1DX. A little bit of rotational play, which I understand is normal. However there seems to be a very slight amount of vertical play. If I grab the lens hood and body and sort of tilt up and down between the two, you can see the play between the mounts (again, a small amount...) Also, just holding the 1DX and slightly shaking it around, it sounds loose. I'm test driving a 300mm 2.8 right now and notice it does the exact same thing. So, if there is an actual problem, I'm assuming it's the body. Does it sound like there's something wrong? Or is my OCD just kicking into hyper drive:eek:. Cheers!

Canon 50 1.2 Full Review

I may have had every mainstream 50mm lens and they were all very very good (all the way "down" to the 1.8 STM).
None really made me say "this is it" so the search continued with my opposite-of-GAS minimalist life.
All research pointed to the Sigma Art. Not one thing wrong with it. Sharp as can be, focuses like a laser on my 6D and got very good shots with it, but there was something intangible missing (like what I get from my Canon 135 2.0).
So I took a leap of Canon-faith and swapped it out for the 50 1.2.
I have found photographic perfection. My life is now totally complete. All of the rendering that I seek in a photographic instrument.
Pics to follow. Been a little laid up with a (now resolved and was much better than it could have been) family medical crisis.
I avoided all of the technical stuff because it's all meaningless anyway. Love this lens and it'll likely live on my camera 70% of the time; if not more.

PhotographyBlog: Canon PowerShot SX740 HS Review

The PhotographyBlog has completed their review of the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS.
The review seems to be a mixed bag, as Canon has selectively removed some features and added others.
The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS falls firmly into the “modest upgrade” category of camera releases, principally adding just two new features to a design that hasn’t really changed very much during the last few years. 4K video recording is the new headline grabbing feature, and for some people this will be reason alone to consider paying the full RRP for the latest model – for everyone else, we’d advise opting for last year’s inevitably discounted SX730 model instead, which only suffers in comparison by offering slower burst shooting rates – otherwise, it’s essentially the same camera.

Canon Patent Applications: More stacked sensor patents

Canon has released a couple of stacked sensor patent applications this week dealing with various issues surrounding the manufacturing or use of stacked sensors.
In US Patent Application 2018-0233523, they discuss sealing to form a moisture proof barrier thus protecting the internal elements from water, etc.  This is another highly detailed sensor patent, with methods of manufacturing included, indicating that Canon is quite a ways into this research.
According to an aspect of the present invention, a solid-state imaging apparatus includes a plurality of pixels each of which includes a photoelectric conversion unit and a readout circuit configured to process a signal generated by the photoelectric conversion unit or configured to read the signal, and a peripheral circuit configured to read signals from the plurality of pixels. The plurality of photoelectric conversion units is disposed in a first member, and at least a part of...

The Emperor Bans Noisy Mirrors

Yes, I did see the other thread started with the same Bloomberg article, but it was posted with a tunnel-vision focus on a silly mistake made by the journalist, and the thrust of the article, too scary for some here on CR, was totally ignored.

As was the mention in the final paragraph of Japan's Emperor banishing mirrors from his presence:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-super-fast-cameras-are-winning-over-the-pros

"If Sony succeeds in making mirrorless cameras the industry standard, expect press conferences to become a lot quieter without the shh-cluck shutter sounds made by DSLRs. That's already made them popular among pro photographers at golf tournaments and courtrooms. The scuttlebutt among shooters in Japan is that noisy cameras will be banned from Emperor Akihito's abdication ceremony in April, which effectively means only Sony Alphas could be allowed in the room. An imperial endorsement, if there ever was one."

I know, "The Death of dSLR's" has been clickbait for years, but how many companies and how many technologies can continue competing for the dwindling pool of photographers with the money, love of great image capturing, talent, and lack of self-consciousness to carry around a heavy backpack while friends, family, and everybody else have a smartphone in their pockets? Printing isn't very popular anymore, so if an image has the quality to display nicely on screen, how many people will see any need for what a FF camera can do?

On the other hand, giant 4k screens for slideshows may save dSLR yet.

I'm very happy to hear the 400mm f/2.8 has been updated. Most members already know that the current generation of Big Whites does great with tele-extenders, so the new version will likely play well with EF-X adapters.

Professional images will always be in demand, but the market for the gear may never return to its peak of 10-12 years ago. In fact it may dwindle to the size of professional cinematic gear. But look at the cost of such gear and the relatively small quantity produced. Who will be paying for amazing sports photos in the coming years? The stills-photographers on the sidelines are going to be competing not only against each other but against increasingly high quality frame grabs from digital video--for an incredibly shrinking pool of sports-news outlets. And with the participants of conflict having smartphones which capture viewpoint action with adequate IQ, how many war photographers can make a living, can compete with the many available images from the participants?

I would also add that predicting the future of a technology based on today's stock market is crazier even than my speculations.

Using camera gear with vision issues.

I have started to post this thread a couple of times and held off because I was not sure how it would be received. I decided to post to this forum since I use Canon gear and have seen a few posts where people mention vision issues. There are a lot of ways that our society defines blindness, but I am going to use the US IRS definition for this exercise, basically 0 vision in one eye and 20/200 or worse in the second eye. I have been in this categothis definition of blindness since birth and I am over 60. You may ask "are there really blind photographers" and the answer is yes. There are blind photographers who have been published, work hung in museums, etc. The photography you find with a search for "blind photographers" will cover the gaunt from painstaking attempts to capture the world as "normals" to abstract representations of how the blind world appears to the photographer. I got into photography during college because it was fun, challenging and everyone told me it wasn't the right hobby for someone with my vision. I started with models, landscapes and of course moved to wildlife because it was more challenging. It helps that I spent a lot of my youth in the outdoors and developed a love of animals. I tend to adhere to the Walt Disney philosophy "if you can dream it, you can do it".

I believe most camera companies lag behind in using their shiny new cameras with computer processors to address accessibility. Almost every electronic device today has embraced some level of accommodation for sight, sound or mobility into their devices. What I would like to do is collect input and write a letter to Canon (I may even copy Nikon) to pass along some feedback. Sony and others may have already addressed some of these issues but I did not see it in the couple of Sony's and Panasonics that I owned. I have not investigated alternative DSLR's since I have used Canon for a large part of my photo life and didn't want to rock the boat. I am only trying to address the vision part of the accessibility issues today and have two questions:
  1. Do you have tricks, techniques, tools to help you work around DSLR limitations related to your vision
  2. What would you have vendors change about their current crop of camera to make it easier for vision impaired (or those loosing eyesight with aging) to better see, compose and capture images.
Here are some of my comments to the questions above (best way I can explain my vision is that I do not have depth perception and would need a 10-12 x binocular to see the subject at the same size as a person with 20/20 vision. Glasses only correct a slight blurriness which can be done with the camera diopter)
  1. Current workarounds (Coming from 1dxII & 5dIV)
    1. Zoom where function is provided, most beneficial with image review
    2. Partner with a non-photographer that knows your problem and can help with spotting wildlife and notices those electric lines in your beautiful landscape.
    3. Carry a magnifying glass on a cord around your neck for quick access to read a screen or setting
    4. Carry an 8x or 10x monocular for looking at scenics, wildlife etc. Anyone want to buy 1/2 a binocular since I only use one side?
    5. Use zoom lenses to zoom in on a subject and then back off for composition. This will let you get a good look at the subject before you shoot. I tried the external magnifiers and they are too dark and have limited field of view.
    6. Thoroughly know your camera and preprogram as much as possible so you are not changing individual settings. Use C1,C2, C3 to their full effect.
    7. Organize the camera bag where everything has a defined location.
    8. Setup the rear INFO screens to only display critical information you need to review/change your settings. Get rid of any fields you use on an infrequent basis. Use Custom Quick Control to build a custom INFO display if necessary.
    9. Turn off any viewfinder information you don't need or can't read. I can't ready any of the information in the viewfinder, so I turn off everything I can to eliminate distractions. I can see the AF point displays
    10. Use your cameras diopter adjustment if it will help you avoid having to use glasses while looking through the viewfinder.
    11. Stay away from the phrase "looks good as far as I can see" when the driver asked if the road is clear for a turn. Some blind guy humor!
  2. What I would like to change. Some of these may be easier/possible with the new mirrorles
    1. User configurable color, density and brightness for locked AF point displays on all cameras
    2. Brighter, longer lasting markings on all camera dials, buttons and information, etc.
    3. Mirrorless - Zoom button for the EVF that lets you do a user definable zoom 2x, 4x, etc. I wish it was possible to add a magnify switch for current DSLR design to magnify the DSLR OVF.
    4. Mirrorless - Bigger, brighter viewfinders without lag
    5. Bigger, brighter alignment marks for lenses and bodies. Maybe a raised area on the lens so you can feel the alignment point in dark conditions. I don't know brail, so it can be a simple raised line.
    6. User selectable fonts, font size, color and density (Bold).
    7. 2-3 background color options
    8. Higher resolution rear displays - brighter, sharper, etc OLED?
    9. Selectable audio prompt
I am going to stop with these and see what others might propose. I may not be raising an issue that affects most people, but I know a lot of baby boomers who are experiencing a loss of visual acuity. Photography gets in your blood and I know I want to continue my attempts to create art until I can no longer lift the camera.

Very interested in any feedback you may have on the two questions.

Canon USA: Canon Professional Services

Canon USA has released a new video discussing the features and benefits of CPS (Canon Professional Services).  Unlike other programs, the only qualification needed is how much eligible Canon gear you have.  You don’t have to have professional credentials unlike both Sony and Nikon services, anyone can take advantage of CPS.
With three tiers of photography related memberships (Silver, Gold and Platinum), Canon CPS provides a high level of support for professionals.  CPS is one of the core strengths of the Canon ecosystem, yet is often understated.
Check out the various CPS levels of membership as well as further information on CPS here.

Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III one of two “Big White Lenses” coming ahead of Photokina [CR3]

We were told a while back that two big white lenses would be announced ahead of Photokina in September. We were also told that the lenses would both be version 3’s, which means they’ll be replacing two current Big White Lenses.
A different source than the original is telling us that one of the lenses to be announced will be an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III.
The second big white to be replaced is still unknown at this time

Upgrades for these lenses will likely focus on weight reduction and updated coatings. We expect the optical formulas to remain about the same.
When Canon updated the “Big White Lenses” to version II, they announced the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II and EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II at the same time and a few months later announced the EF 500mm f/4L IS II and EF 600mm f/4L IS II. We wouldn’t be shocked to see things happen the same way for the version 3 lenses.
Update: We’ve...

Updated models registered for certification

Nokishita Camera has updated their list of registered Canon models for certification.  As with all registration discoveries, these may or may not be imminent releases.  The model of PC2357 would seem to indicate a mirrorless  (powershot camera) camera with a LP-E6/E6N battery.  Perhaps a beefier M5 in the horizon or a new full frame mirrorless?

Hidden gems of Japan: Tokyo and beyond with the Canon EOS M50

DPreview released a video today sponsored by Amazon and Canon from Alex T. Thomas and Kathryn Bingham two photographers residing in Tokyo.
They have been in Toyko for the last 4 years studying the language and exploring Japan.  On a recent trip from Tokyo they went to a small riverside town of Gujo Hachiman, they each brought an M50 to document the trip.
Watch the video for what they discovered.
It seems that the EOS-M50, widely panned when it first came out is certainly sounding better as time goes on.  Reviews and commentary are now coming in as it being one of the best entry level cameras you can buy right now.  It seems to be a common narrative with Canon where  initial reports are disappointing, and then it gets into people’s actual hands, and it’s well regarded.
I think the M50 is an interesting indicator of future EOS-M products from Canon and where they can take the line to.  It will be interesting to follow in the months, and perhaps year ahead.

Rumors flying in on the Nikon FF mirrorless

Two bigger scoops just surfaced at NR.

First, a firm one -- more trademarking:

NIKONOS = Nikon Operating System... or actually the platform's brand name?

Second, just a rumor but a detailed one:

A platform built-around high end primes?! The f/0.95 prime we've been hearing about is real?! That is the opposite of small if true.

What Bloomberg thinks of Sony, mirrorfree and CaNikon

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-super-fast-cameras-are-winning-over-the-pros

1 sentence makes me cringe almost as much as it will make Neuro cringe :-)
The Alpha’s mirrorless design lets image sensors grab light faster and stay in focus using sophisticated software.
:D :p

Charts for last 5 years show Sony has been doing something right. No matter whether "Canon sells the most mirrorslappers" or not :-)

OpticalLimits tests the Canon 70-200 F4L IS II

OpticalLimits, formerly known as photozone.de has completed their testing of the Canon 70-200 F4L IS II.
Their conclusion? I think they like it .. and give it their highly recommended seal of approval.
From their conclusions;
The king is dead and, yes, long live the new king. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS II is everything that the mk I was plus some. It is the perfect playmate for ultra-resolution Canon cameras. It is mostly tack sharp at mainstream settings with no real weakness across the focal length range. Lateral CAs are low and not really an issue. Image distortions can be visible specifically at the long end though and you can spot some moderate vignetting at f/4. If you use digital auto-correction that will be a lesser concern, of course. The quality of the bokeh is Okay for a zoom lens but it has its shortcomings.
