Lens decision: Canon 100mm 2.8 L or non L Macro vs Sigma 85mm 1.4 ex

Hello Everyone,

me and my wife will have a baby in June and I need a proper lens. I have a canon 7D mark2.
I wanna do normal baby portrait shots and also some detailshots of the hands an so on.

With the 50mm options I am too much into the babys face, I feel that I need a little more distance.
Currently Im leaning towards the 85mm 1.4 EX from Sigma. The only thing thats holding me back is the minimum focus distance of 0.85m. Thats why I amd thinking about the 100mm 2.8 macro options.
The only things that concearns me here is that on my 7Dii those will be 160mm lenses, and I am afraid to be too far away indoors. Also the L version is rocking the budget too much.

What are your experiences with these lenses? Maybe you can help me out here ;)
Thaks a lot.

Cheers

Stefan

Patent: Canon 24-70 f/2.8 Optical Formula and More

HTML:
A patent showcasing a host of optical formulas from Canon has <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-variety-of-lenses-discussed">appeared over at Canon News</a>. These patents deal with small focusing groups that allow for light and fast autofocus performance, perhaps more geared to STM than to USM motors being used.</p>
<p><strong>Optical Formulas Covered in the Patent:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>11-22mm f/4-5.6</li>
<li>24-70mm f/2.8</li>
<li>35mm f/2.8</li>
<li>18-150mm f/3.5-6.3</li>
</ul>
<p>We’re not sure if these are EF, EF-S, or EF-M lenses, or a mixture of all three mounts.</p>

Are There Any More DSLRs Coming in 2018?

HTML:
Are there any more DSLRs coming in 2018?</p>
<p>We’re getting this question a lot, as a lot of people would love to see new EOS 7D and EOS 5DS series cameras coming to market.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, we don’t have even a hint of another DSLR coming in 2018. Not even a follow-up to the EOS 80D.</p>
<p>This may change over the coming months as we approach Photokina in September, but the current roadmap that we have doesn’t show another camera of significance coming. All we know for sure camera wise, is that there will be one G series PowerShot announced in 2018.</p>
<p>If this changes, we’ll obviously let you know.</p>

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED Review

ePhotozine has reviewed the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED. Although they give it a rave review for IQ, it is obvious that there is a dramatic drop in MTF on going from 300-400mm
https://www.ephotozine.com/article/nikon-af-s-nikkor-180-400mm-f-4e-tc1-4-fl-ed-review-32085
and the resolution on an 850 is poorer at 400mm than is that of the Tamron 100-400mm in the centre on a 5DSR.
https://www.ephotozine.com/article/tamron-100-400mm-f-4-5-6-3-di-vc-usd-lens-review-31750
No doubt it has advantages of f-stop and AF, but not the IQ you would expect from such a pricey beast.

Service Life Expired - EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM

I just found out the hard way that the original EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens is officially out of service life as far as Canon Service is concerned.

My lens had a severe impact on a gig last week. I sent it in to CPS for a repair quote, and they told me they won't fix it since the service life has expired.

The damage appears to be to the lens mount only, but internal damage could have occurred as well.

Do any third party repair shop exists for Canon lenses? If so, are there any recommended shops I should consider?

Thanks in advance!

DJI Phantom 5 Drone To Have Interchangeable Lenses?

HTML:
<p>It looks like the upcoming <a href="https://photorumors.com/2018/03/18/dji-phantom-5-drone-to-feature-an-interchangeable-lens-camera/">DJI Phantom 5 will have interchangeable lenses</a>. This could be a game changer for consumer drones.</p>
<p>The lens in the image above is a 50mm, it would be likely DJI would announce a few prime lenses with the Phantom 5.</p>
<p>We expect to see both the DJI Mavic Pro II and DJI Phantom 5 to be announced in the next couple of months.</p>

Does Picture Style affect how image looks on the rear screen?

I'm currently using a 5D4. My images often look great on the rear LCD, but not so good when I get them into Lightroom. Sometimes, even with all my Lightroom skills, I can't duplicate the look I recall seeing on the LCD screen. I'm sure you've heard this before!

If i understand correctly, the camera applies an enhancement process to the RAW image and creates a small JPG to display on the rear LCD screen.

I'm wondering if changing the Picture Style settings also changes the image appearance on the LCD screen?

I currently have the setting on Standard. I am thinking of changing it to Neutral or even manually setting all the Picture Style values to zero in order to keep the camera from enhancing what I see on the screen.

There are many ways one can look at this problem and I'm wondering what my fellow CR photographers have done about it?

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II is Coming in April [CR3]

HTML:
We have confirmed that the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II will be announced in April. We have not confirmed if the Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM has moved up to April from the original Photokina announcement we were previously told about.</p>
<p>We also think there is a good chance that another 70-200mm lens will be coming for Photokina in September.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

A New EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III Still a Possibility in 2018? [CR1]

HTML:
We reported a couple of months ago that a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/another-canon-ef-70-200mm-f-2-8l-is-iii-mention-cr2/">new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III was coming</a>, and then we <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/a-new-ef-70-200mm-is-coming-in-2018-cr3/">scaled that back to just a new EF 70-200mm</a> was coming as we couldn’t confirm the speed of the lens. Last week it was confirmed from outside sources that an <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/another-canon-ef-70-200mm-f-2-8l-is-iii-mention-cr2/">EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II</a> was indeed on the horizon.</p>
<p>After all of that, we still believe that a new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III is still a possibility in 2018. We’ve again received a few mentions that such a lens is currently in testing and that it is scheduled to be announced in 2018.</p>
<p>We haven’t confirmed this yet, but we hope to do so soon.</p>

Canon Shows off 360 Degree Intelligent Camera and a 100-400mm Smartphone Camera

HTML:
Canon is showing off two new concept cameras at the Photography Show 2018 in the UK. One is a 360 degree intelligent camera and the other is a 100-400mm smartphone camera.</p>
<p>The Canon Smartphone camera attaches to your phone via a flip out lightning port and is lightweight at only 100g. The concept also shows a clip-on viewfinder that can be attached to the lens.</p>
<p>The 360 degree intelligent camera can automatically shoot both stills and video and uses AI to decide whether to shoot video or stills. The camera has 3x zoom and can pan and tilt a full 380 degrees. It can also be attached to the hot shoe on an EOS DSLR.</p>
<p>The folks manning the Canon booth were allowing visitors to try out each concept and asked to fill out a short survey about the products.</p>

5d Mikv focus - lens microadjustment - always off

Hi , been really testing the focus on my 5d 4 recently with fast paced lifestyle shoots shooting fairly wide open F1.6 on my primes - 50L , 85L mkII & sigma 35 art.
I was getting loads of missed focus , using single point one shot on static shots and AI tracking on walking shots , much more than my mk 3 .
So I checked microadjust and tweaked it for each lens at each scenario , and they needed +5 to 12 , enough to put it out by a few inches to half a head on my 85mm!

But every time I want to the AF menu page it was always showing AF micro adjust as off .. I could see a way to turn it on and stay on , especially if I switched camera off for a few minutes .
This was on Manuel mode , and same on Custom modes c1-c3. I suspect I have to re-register each custom mode.
But it’s not clear if I have `AF micro adjust actually on in any mode - can anyone help?

I also feel that tracking in standard config is not as good as my mk3!
I never had to worry about much AF scenarios before now I’m getting 1 in 5 in focus on slow to med speed walking or static when fairly wide open .

Thanks

Advice for renting a lens for Yellowstone

I might be going to Yellowstone in July for about 4 days. I'll rent one long lens to go with the 16-35 f/4L (filter kit lens) and 135L. I'll shoot mostly geologic features and some wildlife and sunrise/sunset expanses. I'm torn between the 150-600 G2 and a Canon Prime such as a 500. The price is a huge consideration but since I do not have much experience with longer glass, will the cost of renting better faster and better IQ lenses be wasted on me?

What are some great lenses, focal lengths that have served you well in Yellowstone?

TIA

DPReview Interview With Canon Execs, \

HTML:
During the CP+ show earlier this month, DPReview had the chance to interview a few Canon executives about all things Canon imaging. DPReview asked most of the questions us enthusiasts wanted answered.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.dpreview.com/interviews/1807023531/canon-interview-increased-competition-allows-us-to-level-up">From DPReview</a>:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>How important is it for Canon to add higher-end mirrorless products to your lineup?</strong></p>
<p>At Canon we have what’s called a ‘full lineup strategy’. This means that we want to satisfy all of the demands in the market, so we have mirrorless and also DSLR, which combined makes an EOS hierarchy. We want to fill the gaps to satisfy customer demands across the board.</p>
<p>The new M50 is an entry-level model, because that’s where the high-volume sales are. We want to establish ourselves in this market, and then move forward [from there]. In accordance with the full lineup strategy, we will be tackling [the mid-range and high-end mirrorless market] going forward.</p>
<p><strong>The EOS M50 offers 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but not at the same time. Is there a technical reason for this limitation?</strong></p>
<p>With the EOS 5D Mark IV, we do offer 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, so technically it is feasible. But given the position of the M50 in the lineup, we can’t include all of the features available in a product like the 5D IV. Given the position of the product, we wanted to achieve the optimal balance [of features] in a camera in that range. We’ve optimized the M50 as best we can [for its market position], and within those parameters, the combination of 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus was not possible. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/interviews/1807023531/canon-interview-increased-competition-allows-us-to-level-up">Read the full interview at DPReview</a></p></blockquote>

Hacking the Canon Connect Station CS100

<p>It looks like a group of folks is working hard to “hack” the <a href="https://bhpho.to/2IvLc7T">Canon Connect Station CS100</a> for fun and to add some functionality to the unit.</p>

FF Mirrorless Needed in 2018 -- A7-III changed the segment !

As a 30 year Canon EOS "fan boy", member of CPS, advocate for full frame -- The other guys have given us one helluva challenge: The A7-III (due April 10th)

Priced like a 6D-II, performs better than anything Canon sells (well, I've never shot 1Dx), they finally have me tempted.

CPS loaned me a M5 which I found very lacking compared to the user interface and performance of EOS.

We are behind in sensors (My Leica Q out resolves my 6D), woefully behind in autofocus of action, and our feature set is below others price-for-price.

The latest Metabones Adapter (Mark-V) makes all of my Canon glass sing on a Sony. So for $2,500 I could have a far better sensor for my Canon glass and they would all focus better.

I never thought that I would think seriously about leaving...

Industar 50 f/3.6 vs Super Takumar 55 f/1.8

I've been playing around with old manual focus lenses lately and have found it interesting how they can vary in "look" when set at the same settings. It is something fun I like to do. I've been focusing my attention on old Super-Takumar m42 screw mount lenses and old Soviet m42 lenses adapted to my 5D mark III. I've managed to assemble a collection of eight lenses so far for less than $175. That's with one of those lenses (Jupiter 135mm f/3.5) costing a hefty $79 shipped from the Ukraine. The Industar 50mm was a paltry $10 with free shipping from Latvia. How the person could even ship it here to the States for $10 is a mystery to me. Maybe he's got a pal in the post office.

So far: Quantaray 28mm f/2.8 (Ritz Camera store brand), Rokunar 35mm f/2.8 (off brand), Super-Takumar 35mm f/3.5, Super-Takumar SMC 55mm f/1.8, Helios 44-2 58mm f/2, Super-Takumar 105mm f/2.8, Hanimex 135mm f/2.8, Jupiter 37A 135mm f/3.5. When they get to me I buy a nice metal hood for each and screw on lens caps. They are stored in bottle koozies.

Anyway, I don't know whether anyone is interested in this part of the hobby.

Below is an example of how I store the lenses and a comparison of the Industar 50 f/3.6 and Super-Takumar 55 f/1.8 set at the same settings. As you can see they each have a different look with the vignetting on the Industar being quite pronounced. My quest isn't for optical perfection, but for differences in how similar lenses (read focal length) render the same scene. Sharpness and vignetting isn't really a concern. Just the look. Of course, Soviet quality control was wonderful ( :o ) so whether f/3.5 is really f/3.5 on the Industar is anybody's guess. The difference between the two is striking.

It is fun to have so many new toys for very little money and I'm going to keep getting these wonderful old lenses as I can.

If anyone is interested in this stuff I will keep posting comparisons and photos, but maybe the M42 lenses need their own sticky thread?

Headed to Japan: gear/locations/advice needed

I'm off to Japan. One very full week of work and then one week of vaca. The majority of the time I will be in Tokyo but will likely do one major trip out of town -- either to Kyoto or to Mt. Fuji.

Advice appreciated for:

1) Places to shoot. Note we're talking mid/late April, so after the cherry blossoms blow through Tokyo. I don't think I want to travel north just to see blossoms coming in -- I hear it's amazing, but I've never been to Japan and have much bigger cultural/visual/culinary fish to fry on my hitlist.

2) What gear to bring, but note that it must fit in the photo compartment of my PRVKE 21 -- see below. For rough size purposes, it can hold my 5D3 + two FF lenses that are in the standard/wide FL range (possibly three if two are small and the other is an f/4 zooms) + filter loadout (and no hoods, which is fine).

I might be talked into bringing my GuraGear Kiboko 22L instead (a more dedicated photo bag with a lot more camera space), but it's on the back end of a business trip and I know I'll overpack it. I really don't want 30-40 pounds on my back while suited up for work during the week before the vaca starts. So you'd have to sell me on that like a champ.

3) Besides what I presume is the obligatory photography pilgrimage to the Akibahara area of Tokyo, are there other musts for a photographer there? I mean tourist/cultural photography experiences -- like photo museums, a Canon corporate site, walls of famous old cameras, etc. -- not necessarily shooting opportunities. Think less 'Instagram opportunity' here and more 'guy who wants to absorb a rich slice of a photography loving culture'. Where might fit that bill?

4) Is it clear in english (or with the universal language pictorial) where I can / cannot shoot in Japan? I don't know what areas are considered sacred / off-limits from photography.

Arigato in advance

- A
