A Minor Update on Canon's Plans for NAB 2018

HTML:
Last week we posted that Canon will announce one Cinema EOS camera ahead of NAB 2018, we gave it a [CR3] rating.

That still holds true, however our assumption about a higher end camera being announced, most notably an EOS C500 Mark II don’t appear to be true.

One of the EOS C100 Mark II or EOS C300 Mark II will see an update (We can’t see the C200 or C700 being updated), at the time of writing this, we don’t know which one with certainty, as we’re getting conflicting information.

We’re also pretty sure a non Cinema EOS camera will be announced at NAB 2018.

Canon TC80n3

Hi everybody :)

I've been looking at picking up one of the above remotes for more precise exposures when using my Lee filters.

I just recently did some research to find out that this was released circa 2000 and I was wondering if a) this is still a competent tool, b) if there are third party units that do the job equally well or better or c) whether Canon may update this unit in the not to distant future

This is just me trying to find some user opinions before I make a firm decision

Thanks everyone

I need a little reassurance.....

Humor me, please. I just got a refurb 5D iv for a great price ($2209). It is immaculate and all seems well. After much trouble, was able to get a shutter count (there are not a whole lot of ways to do this) and it is 3070 actuations. I know that this is really not many for this type of camera. My (soon to be retired 5D iii has close to 50,000 actuations and is still going strong).

Anyone out there think I should even worry? My gut says no but nobody sitting at my dining room table tonight to tell me...........

Thanks.

Popular Pro-Level Lens Gets Even More Versatile

This new NIKKOR lens is a professional super-telephoto zoom lens, which is even more versatile with an extended wide range of 180-400mm, and a constant f/4 aperture to easily isolate a subject from the sidelines, even in challenging light. This is also the first NIKKOR lens to include a built-in 1.4X teleconverter, allowing photographers to seamlessly swap to a 252-560mm1 (FX-format) focal range. The teleconverter is engaged at the flick of a switch, and is easily operated with a single finger while looking through the viewfinder. When used on the Nikon D500 and other DX-format DSLRs, the focal length is the equivalent of 270-600mm (378-840mm with teleconverter engaged).

Whether capturing fast-moving winter sports on the slopes or elusive wildlife at a distance, photographers can shoot with confidence from this high performance NIKKOR lens. The new 180-400mm f/4 is optimized for high-speed capture, and features an electromagnetic diaphragm, helping to create smooth and consistent exposures while shooting high-speed bursts of images. What’s more, the AF tracking algorithm controlling the motor drive has been enhanced to increase tracking performance of fast moving subjects. When using cameras equipped with Nikon’s advanced 153-point AF system (D5, D500, D850), the outer row of AF points are activated as cross-type sensors to significantly enhance the AF coverage throughout the frame.2

Enhanced Performance with the Addition of New Technology

The lens now uses a fluorite element, which contributes to improved balance while minimizing weight. To further enhance handling and agility, the lens has adopted a new ball-bearing tripod collar ring to create a seamless transition from shooting horizontal to vertical composition. The VR mechanism offers a normal and sports mode, with up to four stops3 of compensation to help create sharp images, even when handheld.

The lens construction includes the use of durable magnesium alloy for weight reduction, while the lens is also sealed against dust and moisture. A fluorine coating is also used to help repel water droplets and dirt.

The optical formula of the lens uses eight Extra Low Dispersion (ED) elements, doubling the amount of ED elements used by its predecessor, the NIKKOR 200-400mm. These help to provide extremely sharp and detailed images and 4K UHD / 1080p video, and is ideally mated to high resolution Nikon DSLR cameras. Nikon’s exclusive Nano Crystal Coat is used to effectively suppress instances of ghosting and flare.

Price and Availability

The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens will be available in March 2018 for a suggested retail price of $12,399.954. For more information on this NIKKOR lens and other Nikon products, please visit www.nikonusa.com.

1. When the built-in or an external teleconverter is used, the focal length may not be displayed correctly in shooting information / Image data.

2. This feature will be available with a firmware upgrade for the D5, D850 and D500 as of March 2018

3. Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when FX-format compatible lenses are attached to a FX-format digital

GoPro Inc. For Sale Per Report

HTML:
Things haven’t been going well for GoPro for quite some time. They failed miserably at drones and their recent Q4 2017 financials weren’t good.

According to CNBC, GoPro Inc. hired JP Morgan Chase to broker a deal for the company. GoPro has a market capitalization of about $1bil, but any potential buyer is likely to pay far less than that. GoPro Inc stock is sitting at about $6.50 currently, after peaking at nearly $90 back in 2014.

GoPro Inc. CEO Nick Woodman confirmed that the company is looking for a buyer or a partnership.

Nick Woodman to CNBC:

If there are opportunities for us to unite with a bigger parent company to scale GoPro even bigger, that is something that we would look at.

I wondered a few years ago if action cams were a product you could build an entire company around since none of the big camera companies outside of Sony seemed to give them much of a thought.

Do we want GoPro products to continue to exist? If so, who should look to acquire or partner with the company?

The folks at Imaging Resource decided to do a weather sealing torture test to help them decide on their favourite camera of 2017. It came down to the Nikon D850 and the Sony A7R III.

For some added fun, they also included two cameras from 2016, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and the Olympus E-M1 Mark II.

While the Canon and Olympus passed with flying colors, the Nikon D850 had one minor hiccup that was rectified with the hot shoe cover. However, the Sony had a bit more trouble... the camera stopped working.

Packed with big features to satisfy demanding photographers and videographers alike

The new 10.2-megapixel Digital MOS Sensor with Dual Native ISO Technology and Venus Engine 10 faithfully reproduce even dark parts of the image, allowing high ISO capture when the use of supplemental lighting may not be possible. This sensor is a multi-aspect type with a sufficient margin for realizing the same angle of view in 4:3,17:9,16:9 and 3:2 aspect ratios. The sensor also enables photo shooting in 14-bit RAW format, providing higher flexibility for professional RAW stills development workflows. When shooting in dark environments, videographers can now focus on filming that perfect shot as they no longer need to worry about noise which often results from having to use higher ISOs. The Dual Native ISO Technology suppresses noise to produce cleaner footage when taken in all light. Both videographers and photographers can now enjoy the same diagonal field of view across all aspect ratios with the True “Multi-Aspect Ratio” Function. This feature means you can easily swap between difference aspect ratios giving you the accuracy you want from your lenses, and making the process easier while producing and editing in post-production. The LUMIX GH5S is compatible with Time Code IN and OUT, like the professional camcorders, which is easy to set using the flash sync terminal and bundled conversion cable for a standard BNC terminal. This is especially important for “lip synchronization” when using multiple cameras. The LUMIX GH5S can be used as Time Code generator for other GH5S cameras and professional camcorders. The Time Code IN/OUT functionality makes a production teams job pain-free as it provides synchronization for both video and audio devices used on multi-cam productions.

The LUMIX GH5 achieved 4KUHD 60p video recording for the first time as a digital mirrorless camera in 2017.2 The new LUMIX GH5S establishes a new milestone by realizing the world’s first 4K 60p video recording in Cinema 4K (4096×2160), 3 capable of internal 4:2:2 10-bit video recording up to Cinema 4K30p and internal 4:2:0 8-bit Cinema 4K60p. subsampling commonly used for film production, for even more faithful color reproduction.4 The LUMIX GH5S also records 4:2:2 10-bit 400-Mbps All-Intra in 4K 30p/25p/24p and 200- Mbps All-Intra in Full-HD.

Continuing the LUMIX GH tradition, there is no time limit for both Full-HD and 4K video recording. The LUMIX GH5S complies with 4K HDR video with Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) mode in Photo Style. A low-bit-rate recording mode, 4K HEVC for HLG, is available. This enables playback on AV equipment compatible with the HLG Display format, such as Panasonic 4K HDR TVs.

The VFR (Variable Frame Rate) function lets users record overcranked (time-lapse) and undercranked (slo-mo) video in C4K/4K (60 fps, maximum 2.5x slower) and FHD (240 fps, maximum 10x slower). A V-LogL and Rec.709 LUT (Look Up Table) are pre-installed in the camera, so users can play videos recorded in V-LogL without having to separately purchase a Software Upgrade Key. Four additional LUTs can be installed using the Panasonic Varicam (.VLT) file format.

DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology and ultra-high-speed digital signal processing achieve fast auto focusing of approximately 0.07 sec 6 with 12 fps (AFS) / 8 fps (AFC) in 12- bit RAW and 10 (AFS) / 7 (AFC) fps in 14-bit RAW high-speed burst shooting. In addition to a total of 225 focus areas, The options for Face/Eye Recognition, Tracking AF, 1-area AF and Pinpoint AF are available for precise focusing. The 4K PHOTO enables 60 fps high-speed capture in approximately 8-megapixel equivalent resolution.

Achieve outstanding footage in any environment, especially in low light

As a camera that excels in shooting in low light, the LUMIX GH5S boasts -5EV luminance detection performance with Low Light AF thanks to the higher sensitivity and optimized tuning of the sensor. Live Boost is another practical feature that makes it possible to check the composition even in total darkness, by boosting the sensitivity just for Live View. The magnification ratio in MF assist is increased from conventional 10x to 20x, which is convenient especially for astronomical photography. An AF Point Scope function, first introduced in the Lumix G9 and Night mode are also integrated.

In order to make the GH5S tough enough to withstand even heavy field use, it is composed of a magnesium alloy full die-cast front, rear and top frame that is not only splashproof7 and dustproof but also freezeproof down to -10 degrees Celsius. The GH5S is equipped with a double SD Memory Card slot, compatible with the high-speed, high-capacity UHS-II and Video Speed Class 90. Users can flexibly choose the recording method from Relay Recording, Backup Recording or Allocation Recording. The HDMI Type A terminal is provided, along with the USB-C Gen1 interface.

Exceptional image capture without concern

The GH5S has a large LVF (Live View Finder) with a stunningly high magnification ratio of approximately 1.52x/0.76x (35mm camera equivalent) providing smooth display at 120 fps. A high-precision, high-speed OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display features 3,680K-dot resolution and 100% field of view. In addition to dual dials, an omni-directional joystick enables more intuitive and flexible operation.

The GH5S includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi® connectivity to offer a more flexible shooting experience and instant image sharing with easy operation. Compatibility with Bluetooth 4.2 (called BLE: Bluetooth Low Energy) enables constant connection with a smartphone/tablet with minimum power consumption. For Wi-Fi, 5 GHz (IEEE802.11ac)8 can be selected in addition to the conventional 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) for an even more secure and stable connection.

For extended battery life and a more stable hold, the new Battery Grip DMW-BGGH5 (sold separately) is available. The XLR Microphone Adaptor DMW-XLR1 (sold separately) allows high-res sound recording with an external XLR microphone.9

The Panasonic LUMIX GH5s will be available from end of February 2 and will retail for $2499 (body only).

*1 RAW files are in 14-bit even when 12-bit is selected.

PR shots of Hollywood movies

Recently I've stumbled upon several Hollywood movies PR photos, that have full EXIF and they seem to be shot with DSLR or mirrorless cameras like 5DMIII or A7S. I always thought they would take shots straight from the movie, which I guess makes no sense to shoot with DSLR. Or does it? I've read interviews with several cinematographers who occasionally use 7D or 5DMIII for handheld shots or camera glued to a car shots etc., but I've always believed this is a less common practice. So possibly there are photographers on the set that just make the same shot as is being filmed? But what's the point? I guess that wouldn't work for scenes with heavy special effects or color grading. Maybe it's much easier like this for analog shot movies?

Does anyone knows how these promotional pictures are made?

cfast prices are not coming down

I am rather surprised that the price of CFast cards have not been reduced. Canon introduced that 1dx M2 well over a year ago. The price of nearly all other electronics would have been reduced by now.

Any know why other than Sandisk does not have any competition so they don't have pressure to reduce the price. I would if Canon will put pressure on Sandisk to drop their prices in exchange for using the cFast format in other cameras.

ST-E2 Focus assist beam issues

I have an ST-E2 which works fine as a focus assist beam on my 70D
I recently purchased an old 1Dsiii. I cannot get the ST-E2 focus assist beam to work on this camera.

BOTH cameras are set to One Shot, (NOT servo), center AF point , evaluative metering.
BOTH have the assist beam enabled in the custom functions.

Any suggestions on what I am missing? Must be some incorrect setting on the 1Dsiii, I just can't figure
out which one---

Thanks!!

November CIPA Sales Numbers Are In, Year-Over-Year Slightly Up

HTML:
CIPA sales numbers for November 2017 have been released, and show another decline in shipments when compared to 2015 and 2016.

The marketshare for mirrorless cameras remains at about 35% of total ILC segment. This number hasn’t moved all that much over the last year or so. While Sony continues to develop and release cutting edge mirrorless cameras, they don’t seem to be taking sales away from DSLRs.

The mirorrless marketshare likely won’t see much movement until Nikon and Canon enter the prosumer full frame mirrorless space.

Total ILC shipments as of November 2017 show a very slight bump up of a few hundred thousand shipments over 2016, we’ll have to wait for the December 2017 numbers to see if 2017 continues to show an increase in sales over 2016.

Any hope for a new Sigma/Tamron/Canon 17-50 f2.8?

I keep hoping a new lens will break cover before I get impatient and replace the 18-55 STM kit lens on our SL1. Any indications, or nothing to go on?

The 18-55 STM leaves room to get something sharper with either f2.8 for speed, or more range on the zoom as a bonus. The Sigma 17-50 f2.8 seems handier for relaxed portrait and event stuff, but the Canon15-85 f3.5-5.6 (similar price for used) would be pretty nice for virtually any other general use stuff. The Sigma 18-35 f1.8 makes me think there's room to get a better 17-50, if anyone intends to build it.

Canon Inc. Boss Wants to See More Innovation

HTML:
The Nikkei Asian Review sat down with Canon Chairman & CEO Fujio Mitarai for a brief interview about Canon’s plans over the medium term. Canon Inc. is definitely looking to acquire more businesses and continue to diversify their portfolio of industries. Canon wants new businesses to generate nearly one-third of sales.

Q: What is the biggest issue currently facing Canon?

A: Our primary management goal this year is to raise our antennas high toward cutting-edge technology. It is on this point where we lag behind other companies. We will open up a research and development center in the U.S.’s Silicon Valley, where we will actively adopt new technology. Read the full interview

Here’s hoping cameras and lenses are part of this goal, there is a general perception that Canon hasn’t innovated the camera space all that much since the launch of DPAF. Whether or not this is factual doesn’t matter, brand perception is a big part of marketing.

Tongariro Northern Circuit

I recently walked the Tongariro Northern Circuit in New Zealand and I thought I'd put up some photos.

All photos taken with a 6D + 24-70 f/4L IS.

For those interested in the walk, it is about 45 km and the circuit starts and finishes in Whakapapa Village. Basically, you walk around Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movies). Most of the walking is fairly easy but the part of the track called the Tongariro Crossing (where you cross the saddle between Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro) is tougher - you're going up for a while! Many people do just the Tongariro Crossing as a day walk - a bus will take you to the bottom on one side, you walk over and get picked up by a bus on the other.

We did the Northern Circuit over four days (there are three huts/campsites along the way and we stayed a night in each) although you can do it in two if you want to. (I haven't checked to see if anyone has ever done it in one day.) The campsites have untreated water, toilets and some gas cookers, but that's about it for the luxuries!

Mt Ngauruhoe sits between Mt Ruhapeu (the snow-capped mountain in the photos) and Mt Tongariro, and all are active volcanoes. Well, I understand that technically Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro are one volcano, but they are separate peaks.

Patent: Tamron 300mm f/2.8, 400mm f/4, 500mm f/4

It looks like Tamron may be entering the world of fast supertelephoto lenses. Three different optical formulas have appeared in the same patent application from Tamron.

I think a 400mm f/4 is a lens missing from everyone’s lineup. Apologies to the Canon 400mm f/4 DO IS II, but I think a non-DO version would likely cost less and could give equal or better performance at the expense of reduced size and weight. Maybe there’s an engineering reason that I am unaware of as to why a non-DO 400mm f/4 doesn’t exist for Canon’s EF mount.

Lensrentals.com Puts the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS Through The Machine Testing

HTML:
Roger over at Lensrentals.com has completed his OLAF testing of the brand new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS. There are lots of charts and all of that to look at.

From Lensrentals.com:

This is a lens where the designer has focused on being very good in as many situations as possible rather than obtaining the highest possible MTF. It’s apparently designed for the person who uses 85mm in a lot of different situations; especially in low light situations.

It’s very sharp, the field is designed to get good focus no matter where you focus, and all reports indicate that the focusing is quick and accurate. If you take a ton of shots, your keeper rate is going to be exceptionally high. And if you shoot in poor lighting with an 85mm it will be amazing compared to almost anything else available in Canon mount. Real the full test at Lensrentals.com

I also must say that I didn’t realize that current EF 85mm f/1.2L II uses an optical design from the early 1970s, that’s a pretty incredible run.

The Canon 85mm f/1.2 II lens, the king of creamy bokeh, is basically a 40-year old optical design first released in 1976 (in FD mount) and released as an EF mount lens after some slight optical modification in 1989. The “II” version, released in 2006, was an electrical/mechanical change only, the optics remained the same. That’s an amazing run for a photography lens. It was designed in the early 1970’s and is still used frequently today.

Consider this day a success.
