Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Tilt-Shift Macro Lens First Impressions

When rumours were posted on this site several years ago about possible new Tilt Shift lenses being in the works from Canon I was hoping that they would eventuate and was really pleased this year when the rumours proved to be correct. I have owned the TS-E 24 II for some time and it is a fine lens. I value the added flexibility/possibilities that tilt and shift offer and enjoy the processes involved for the photographer in using a tilt shift lens.

Normally I wait for plenty of reviews, particularly from Bryan at TDP and aim to rent and try before I buy. However Canon Australia had a good December discount going and surprisingly to me included the new TS-E lenses. Having read the very positive ePhotozine review (thanks to CR for letting me know about this review) I decided to take the plunge. I have been using the 50 TS-E lens over the last couple of days when family Christmas festivities have permitted.

Some images I have taken are in a new thread for this lens in the image gallery.

My first impressions are:
• The look and feel of the lens body is very similar to the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II
• The size of the lens is very similar to the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II, the 50 being a bit longer
• Ergonomically both lenses are similar to use as regards organisation of the Shift, tilt and rotate functions.
• The MF ring has a nice feel, smooth but with enough resistance which suits me fine as it minimises the possibility of accidentally changing focus when making other adjustments.
• Full marks to Canon for the larger knob on the Tilt adjustment. This is much easier to use. Great that it is on the tilt adjustment since this is the one I am more likely to be making fine adjustments too.
• The weight specifications say the 50 is 945 gm (v 780 for the TS-E 24 II) which ephotozine described as hefty but well balanced on their 5DS R. I think weight is a very subjective/relative topic. If your normal setup is an EOS M plus EFM 22 then hefty would be right. If like me you regularly use fast primes with a DSLR then 945 is within a familiar range and equally so if you regularly use one of the Canon f/2.8 zooms. I like the feel and balance of the 50 TS-E on my 6D and have carried it in my hands and used it for 3 hours several times without discomfort. Since a tilt shift lens is going to see plenty of tripod work then weight is less of any issue then anyway.

Overall I have loved using this lens so far. It is a good looking optic and feels well balanced on my 6D. Of the images I have taken so far I like the colour and rendering of the lens. I will leave others to fully test the lens optically but I have not picked up any issues yet.

<p>A couple of things on the surprise me, firstly the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the lens, and if you’re shooting sports, the IS really isn’t needed. The second surprise for me is how high on the list the EF 50mm f/1.2L is, I didn’t think it would be outrenting the EF 85mm f/1.2L II or the EF 100-400mm f/4-5.6L IS II.</p>

<p>Looking at the list, I think Canon is still doing pretty well in the United States, and it’s going to take a lot more from Sony to surpass Canon in marketshare.</p>
<p>You can read all of the rental lists over at <a href="http://www.pjtra.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2017%2F12%2Fmost-popular-photography-and-videography-gear-rented-in-2017%2F">Lensrentals.com</a>.</p>

Canon EOS 9000D Specifications

I have finished it so I upload it here: the specifications book of Canon EOS 9000D. Remember that I've designed it mainly for myself but others may also find it useful. So do not ask for movie shooting as this is a camera. If you want to shoot movies, use a camcorder. Do not ask for Scene Intelligent Auto mode and LiveView support as this is a DLSR camera. If you want to shoot in fully automatic mode using the LCD screen buy an IXUS 285 or PowerShot 620 or whatever you like. :)

Patent: More SuperTelephoto Patent Applications Appear

HTML:
We’ve been told that Canon will announce at least 2 new “big white” lenses in 2018. This is a World Cup year and the event may be used for testing the final versions of the lenses.</p>
<p>The new patents seem to be geared towards further weight reduction of the big white lenses as well as a bunch of ways to reduce abberations.</p>
<p>None of of the following patents mention IS, but looking at the optical formula, you can see grouping of elements that points to IS being included.</p>

Patent: Canon EF-M 9-18mm f/4-5.6

HTML:
A new ultrawide zoom lens for APS-C EOS M cameras has appeared. This may be a replacement for the excellent EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. The only knock against that lens is that it’s not wide enough. Image Stabilization is not part of the patent, which is a notable omission.</p>

Star Trails

This is my first real attempt at a star trail shot. I set up my intervelometer and snapped away for 2 hrs. However, the time between shots was too long (3sec if I recall) so my stack was a series of dashes...I could not find any way to blend them until I tried the "Path Blur" tool in Photoshop. It allows you to draw paths that follow the star trails and I think it turned out ok. Its not a perfect process, as some of the trails end up a bit fuzzy if they aren't lined up with the path, but I don't mind the softer look to these trails.

What are your thoughts? Anyone else use the "Path Blur" tool for this?

BTW - this is Nakusp, BC, Canada.

Wireless Lavalier Mics

For interviews I currently use Audio-Technica AT831 microphones with Fender XLR cables into a Tascam DR-60D that sits on top of my 1DX.

I am very happy with the mics but sometimes it would be better to be wireless.

What wireless mics are you using? Any recommendations?

I would like if possible to try and save a little money and keep using the mics I have, just stick them in a transmitter and get a receiver.

I will probably upgrade the camera to a 1DX Mark II and also go for the Tascam DR-70D at some stage in the near future.

Welcome all thoughts and suggestions.

Thank you and happy holidays.

5D4 zoom to focus area for photos taken in live view mode

Dear forum!

On the 5D4 I regularly use the zoom button (configured to show the actual pixel size) for evaluating the sharpness of a photo. When shooting using the viewfinder the shown magnified area is around the selected autofocus point, which is what I want. On photos taken in live view mode, however, the zoomed area is always in the center of the image, no matter where the focus area was, which is annoying. Is there a way to make the zoom function behave the same way for viewfinder as well as for live view shots?

Many thanks,

Markus

Patent: Canon EF 17-35mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

Christmas Runaway (Short film shot on C100, Sigma 24mm 1.4, Tamron 45mm 1.8 VC)

Merry Christmas everybody!

Just wanted to share my latest Christmas-themed short film with you guys :)
https://youtu.be/k1vZEGtYe2Y
It’s about being willing to give help to others and to be okay with your insecurities - in the spirit of holidays ahaha

Anyways, was my first time using the 24mm Sigma 1.4 and I have to say, it gives a very cinematic feel; more so than my tame on (which I’ve been using and adoring since it’s released). There’s just something about that perspective and ability to have nice bokeh at the same time. Regardless, some close up shots were still on the Tamron. One thing I did worry about was the lack of stabilization for hand-held shots; but I came to realize using the strap-tension-against-neck technique + little warp stabilizationcan pretty much solve that issue!

Anyways, let me know what ya’ll think of the film and happy holidays!
Eugene

PS. Am also happy to answer any questions :)

Monolight Lighting Recommendations please!

Hi all and Happy Holidays to my CR Friends.

I received a B&H gift card, and would like to apply it towards a mono light.

I am new to Monolights and don't even know what features are most important.

Here is information to help with recommendations:

Gear to use it with 5DII, 5DIIIm 1DXII, 600-EX-RT X 2, ST-E3-RT.

I want a monolight with AC/DC (battery) so it could be portable.
I want the monolight to be completely compatible with the 600-EX-RT
The monolight must be durable, and have light that can be replaced if needed.
Effective Modeling light
Powerful enough and fast recycling time.
I'm not sure how fast is fast enough for flash duration
Good quality, durable
Ability to use diffusers etc.
I want a monolight that will be useful well into the future, and be upgradeable if appropriate.
I woiuld like to spend around $600.00 =/- if possible.

I welcome and greatly appreciate input about contending products, and thank you for your time and expertise.

Happy Holiday season to all

Scott

5D3 slow startup time with CF card

Dear all!

I experience a slow startup time (boot time, wakeup from sleep) when using a CF card in my 5D3, firmware 1.2.3

I measured boot time of the camera from swithing the main dial until the AF symbol appears in the viewfinder
  • without memory cards to be <0,5 seconds
  • with SD card only to be ~0,7 seconds
  • with CF card only to be ~1,9 seconds
  • with CF+SD cards to be ~1,9 seconds, same as with CF only
I use
  • SD: a SanDisk Extreme 45MB/s class 10, 32GB
  • CF: a Kingston ultimate 600x, 32GB, UDMA 6 from 2010. When I use an older and slower card, Kingston elite pro, 32GB, 133x, bootup times are slightly longer, 2,3 secs.
Both cards have just been formatted in camera.

Anybody knows, what is going on? Are the CF cards too old and slow? sequential read speed in a USB 3 card reader is high, however, ~100MB/sec.

Merry Christmas,
Sulla

5Ds R: Which S-Type Focusing Screen to choose?

For my new 5Ds R, I ordered the 5Ds / 5Ds R S-type screen from focusingscreen.com. Although I am aware that replacement of the standard screen is quite easy, I really do prefer to have it done by a professional.

Unfortunately, the professional concluded that the screen is too thick and that it doesn't fit ('they just took a 5D III screen and filed off some notches'). I started a paypal dispute with the seller so I hope I can get my money back, but now I still have the original screen in my 5Ds R.

Since I do prefer to have a high-quality screen for my 5Ds R, I am asking for advice here: if you have experience, comments or suggestions please let me know. What I need is a s-type screen with no loss of autofocus accuracy (with AF lenses) that fits well with no risk of coming loose one day.

Recent price drops/specials - Usual practice or no?

With the recent deals on refurbished 6d mk2 with the kit lens for ~ 1200 usd among other deals, I've seen a few posts elsewhere speculating about canons place in the market and the possible suggestions on the sales performance of the camera.

I'm not thinking that canon are doomed or anything, but is the price reduction of this amount with the short time after release usual for canon?
If not, could it be a hint at a new model coming up sooner?

100-400mm: Canon vs Tamron vs Sigma

I have been doing many comparisons of my Canon 100-400mm II (I have looked at 3 copies over the years) and my new Tamron 100-400mm, and looking at the records of the 5 copies of the Sigma 100-400mm I have tested.

On the 5DSR and 5DIV, the Canon has the best IS and is the most stable in the viewfinder, the Tamron next best, perhaps a stop worse in practice, and the Sigma the poorest. The AF of the Canon is the fastest, the Tamron next and the Sigma somewhat behind. The IQs are quite similar.

Matters are different on the M5. The Tamron really comes into its own and has at least equal IQ to the Canon at longer distances. The Sigma is hopeless and doesn't focus properly and gives blurred images - something I found early on with liveview but ignored. I have just been told on one of my exceedingly rare visits to Fred Miranda that it is known that some Sigma lenses are not compatible with liveview.

In a big surprise this evening, I found that at 1.6m close up, not only is the Tamron sharper than the Canon on both the 5DSR and M5, the image is 20% bigger in linear dimensions (the Canon is known to have severe focus breathing). At 19m, the Tamton's image is 4.6% larger. In practice, the magnification of the Canon at its MFD is no greater than the Tamron at its longer MFD because of the focus breathing.

I think the Tamron 100-400mm is by far the best long telephoto for the M5. It is light, balances very nicely, the focus speed is limited by the camera and so the faster AF of the Canon lenses is neutralised. The Tamron seems more sensitive to mirror slap on the 5DSR, and this doesn't affect the image from the M5.
