DPReview reviews the A7R3

Spoiler alert: they love it. ::)

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-a7r-mark-iii-review

I don't get the 'grip has gotten deeper' statement. It looks just like an A9 to me (see pic vs. A7R2), which seems to be more of a thicker body than a bigger/deeper grip. Am I missing something?

I still contend the grip size/depth + grip proximity to the mount simply do not play with big glass, and a vertical grip does nothing to solve that. In that light, I see the A7R3 grip design remaining the #1 problem with the brand -- even above that of the disappointments of the controls / interface / expensive FBW lenses, etc.

Kickstarter: Pinhole Pro S | World's Widest Professional Pinhole Lens

HTML:
<strong>From Thingyfy:

</strong>Since the original success of the Pinhole Pro, our backers have been asking us to release a wide angle version of the professional pinhole lens. We heard you, loud and clear!</p>
<p>Today we are happy to announce two new wide angle lenses to the Pinhole Pro family: the <b>Pinhole Pro S11</b> (11mm) and <b>Pinhole Pro S37</b> (37mm).</p>
<p>Pinhole photography predates any form of modern photography as the most fundamental form of photographic art. The forerunner to the photographic camera was the camera obscura — a permeative photographic device with no lens but a single pinhole aperture.</p>
<p>Contemporary cameras use state-of-the-art lenses, mirrors, mounts, AF/MF techniques, and endlessly higher pixel density to deliver amazing images, but those images are too life-like, lacking the charm of raw, naturally vintage look of pinhole photos boasting the most original saturated colours.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-32271" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/b54bc21d122647c347e0d2897f4a8dc8_original.gif" alt="" width="680" height="382" /></p>
<p>Pinhole is photography in its most original form. However, achieving that unforgettable photographic aesthetics requires high precision engineering and modern state of the art manufacturing technologies. With so many sub-par quality options on the market, as well as the ability for anyone to build their own, we saw an opportunity to not only build a pinhole lens that’s beautiful with exceptional build quality, but also with precision engineering and rich inputs from the photographers and cinematographers themselves — the result was the world’s first ever multi-aperture professional pinhole lens that supports virtually all modern digital cameras with interchangeable lenses.</p>

<p>In the early 20th century, the development of high speed films and mass production of glass lens almost made pinhole photography forgotten. It’s a lost art form, only to be kept alive by the few enthusiasts.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-32273" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/4d063cb6d14cea8859f75d8f030c1a6c_original.png" alt="" width="680" height="453" srcset="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/4d063cb6d14cea8859f75d8f030c1a6c_original.png 680w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/4d063cb6d14cea8859f75d8f030c1a6c_original-225x150.png 225w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/4d063cb6d14cea8859f75d8f030c1a6c_original-338x225.png 338w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/4d063cb6d14cea8859f75d8f030c1a6c_original-610x406.png 610w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></p>
<p>Photographers turned to the endless pursuit of sharpness, resolution and speed. That trend still dominates today. However many photographers like yourself have started to realize that high resolution and high specs can not replace the authenticity of analogue photography that’s more personal, original, unfiltered with a timeless ‘point of view’. Pinhole photography provides exactly that. After all it is the closest to what a human eye can see.</p>

Review: Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III

HTML:
ePHOTOzine has completed their review of the brand new Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III. Canon’s flaghship PowerShot camera which sports an APS-C 24mp image sensor.</p>
<p><strong>From ePHOTOzine:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III has taken the great usability of a Canon DSLR, and the 24mp APS-C CMOS sensor with phase-detection AF built-in, and squished it into a compact camera, whilst maintaining excellent handling and usability. They’ve also put a 3x zoom lens (24-72mm equivalent) on the front, with a relatively bright f/2.8 aperture at the wide-angle end of the lens.</p>

<p>What Canon is offering is unique, giving a 24mp APS-C CMOS sensor, and a 3x optical zoom lens, in a compact camera not much bigger than other compact cameras. We started this review by asking if Canon had made a true miniature DSLR in the size of a compact camera, and from the results, we would say they’ve succeeded. Whilst the camera doesn’t have the battery life to match a DSLR, this can quickly be solved by the purchase of a spare battery or two. <a href="https://www.ephotozine.com/article/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-iii-full-review-31520">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>ePHOTOzine came away quite impressed with the camera. I don’t think any is surprised that it’s a good package, I think the biggest issues against it has been the price tag ($1299USD) and the lack of 4K video capture. I think this camera will sell decently once it sees a price drop.</p>
<p>I was personally surprised how well it felt in my hand once I had a few minutes to play with one.</p>

With stunning image quality – even in low-light scenarios – new electronic viewfinder technology and superb video capabilities, the Leica CL is the ultimate tool to capture everyday moments, all customizable to the photographer’s style. Available on its own or in two new camera-and-lens kit options, the Leica CL makes it simple to incorporate the art of photography into one’s daily life.</p>
<p>Alongside the Leica CL, the iconic photography brand is further diversifying the APS-C system’s portfolio of lenses by introducing the Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH., the smallest-in-class wide-angle lens with supreme imaging performance.</p>
<p><strong>Evolution of the Leica APS-C system portfolio </strong>

With the launch of the Leica CL, the Leica APS-C System now encompasses two remarkable camera models, the Leica CL and the Leica TL2. In technical terms, the two cameras are equals, but retain stark differences in regards to their design and handling. The Leica CL reflects the traditions of Leica with its iconic industrial design, classic physical button controls and dials, while the Leica TL2 embodies a futuristic look, featuring a touchscreen and full-body aluminium. Coupled with the extensive portfolio of lenses, the Leica CL and Leica TL2 make for a formidable system portfolio offering an array of specialized and distinct photographic experiences.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Introducing the Leica CL </strong>

The Leica CL is rooted in Leica’s legacy, calling upon the brand’s heritage look with modern technical features. The instinctual and convenient design of the camera features a user-friendly handling concept, providing for an exceptionally intuitive tool whose compact size and light weight allow for maximum mobility. All essential controls are located on its top plate with just two dials for setting the aperture, shutter speed, ISO value, exposure compensation and shooting mode, for quick and intuitive handling. Keeping convenience at the forefront, all relevant shooting information is viewable on the small LCD screen atop the camera, instantly providing settings and exposure parameters at a glance.</p>
<p>Another outstanding feature of the Leica CL is its built-in electronic viewfinder. With EyeRes® technology developed by Leica specifically for this camera, the viewfinder enables a top-tier viewing experience. Most notable among a number of advantages of the built-in EVF, is the ability to preview the brightness and color of the final image before the shutter release is fully depressed, allowing photographers to always be in control over the composition and exposure.</p>
<p>Alongside an impeccable view of your subjects, the Leica CL offers best-in-class image quality. In combination with the high-resolution, 24 MP, APS-C format sensor of the Leica CL, a Maestro II series processor and fast autofocus system with 49 AF points guarantee brilliant photographs in all situations, including low-light scenes. In addition to being an impressive still-picture camera, the Leica CL also captures striking video at a resolution of up to 4K at 30 frames per second.</p>

<p>Keeping connectivity as a top priority, the Leica CL is equipped with an integrated Wi-Fi module allowing photographers to quickly and easily share their stunning photos and videos by email or on social networks with the Leica CL App for iOS or Android. The remote function of the app also provides the capability for mobile devices to be used as an off-camera remote viewfinder, allowing control of exposure parameters, including when shooting with the self-timer function or from unusual angles.</p>
<p>Thanks to the L-Bayonet mount shared by the Leica TL- and SL-Systems, SL-Lenses can also be used without an adapter on the CL and the TL2. Appropriate adapters are also available for using Leica M- and R-Lenses on the cameras, offering unparalleled creative flexibility and making the Leica CL one of the most versatile cameras in the Leica portfolio.</p>
<p><strong>New Leica Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH. </strong>

To complement the Leica APS-C system, Leica is expanding the impressive TL lens portfolio with a ground-breaking new lens. Compact and lightweight, the new Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH. holds the title as the smallest wide-angle APS-C pancake lens currently available in the market. When mounted to the Leica CL, the camera and prime lens are small enough to fit into a coat pocket or small handbag – providing incredible images everywhere you go. Despite being just 20.5mm (less than one inch) in total length, the lens sacrifices nothing, providing the unrivalled imaging performance all Leica lenses are known for. Travel photography is easy with this light and dynamic lens, especially when paired with the Leica CL.</p>
<p>As a whole, the Leica APS-C System portfolio of lenses offer exceptionally high picture quality and infinite opportunities for creative photography. In addition to the Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH., the selection of lenses currently includes three zoom lenses (Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 11-23 mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH., Vario-Elmar-TL 18-56 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. and the APO-Vario-Elmar-TL 55-135 mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH.) as well as three prime lenses (Summicron-TL 23 mm f/2 ASPH., Summilux-TL 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. and the APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60 mm f/2.8 ASPH.).</p>
<p><strong>All bundled up </strong>

To make the stunning new Leica CL more easily accessible to both new and current Leica fans looking to make their first step into the APS-C system, the Leica CL will be offered in two bundle options alongside an accompanying lens. The “Prime Kit” will include the new Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH lens, while the “Vario Kit” option includes the Vario-Elmar-TL 18-56 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, allowing photographers to get into this new camera and growing system with a lens that best suits their photography style in an easy-to-grab kit.</p>
<p><strong>Availability </strong>

The Leica CL and Leica Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH will both be available from Leica stores, boutiques and dealers at the end of November. The Leica CL body, in black anodized finish, will be $2,795.00 while the Prime and Vario Kits will be $3,795.00 and $3,995.00 respectively. TDP reviews the 85 f/1.4L IS USM

The majority of the guts of the TDP review has been posted, critically including lens IQ information:

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-85mm-f-1.4L-IS-USM-Lens.aspx

IQ comparisons here:

85 f/1.4L IS vs. 85 f/1.2L II @ f/1.4

85 f/1.4L IS vs. Sigma 85 f/1.4 Art @ f/1.4

85 f/1.4L IS vs. Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 @ f/1.4

(Otus left out of these links as it's never been tested on the 5DS R, apparently)

Understanding a few critical caveats...

  • Just one lens each in these IQ comparisons
  • Sharpness is not remotely everything in a lens

...one must still tip their cap to Sigma here. The 35L II delivered the same level of sharpness (and terrific rendering, great AF, etc.) as the 35 Art, but here at 85mm, Canon either couldn't repeat that feat for cost or technical reasons, or they prioritized rendering/OOF areas above sharpness. If you are a sharpness junkie with unreasonable expectations of wide open performance, the Sigma would appear to still be the top dog.

But the Canon has first party AF, is sealed, has IS, and may deliver better color/rendering to your eye (I haven't compared enough to judge). And it's certainly no slouch sharpness-wise.

Vignetting not posted yet (one might imagine this might not be pretty at 77mm front element vs. larger 3rd party front elements), but much of the review is in play. Have a look.

- A

Large umbrella durability.

I like to use Westcott 72" umbrellas when shooting. The problem is that the weight puts a scary strain on the umbrella shaft. I'm always afraid the shaft will break.

Has anyone rigged something to help with this? Thought about getting an aluminum tube to slide over about 2 feet of the shaft to help with rigidity. I wish somebody made a solid aluminum shaft instead of the thin hollow tube Westcott is using on that heavy umbrella.

First Shoot with the new EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM - IT'S BEAUTIFUL

After a year of frustration with the Sigma 85mm Art lens, I pre-ordered the Canon 1.4L immediately. My plan was to compare it with the Sigma and see if it was worth swapping out for. After 3 days, I concluded that YES it was. After my first shoot with it? I think this is the new king of autofocus 85mm. Maybe it won't chart better than the Art lens, but it's a helluva lot better at everything else that matters in making money with your gear.

EDITING: I edited these to personal taste from RAW files. Very little to no chromatic aberration corrections were performed on any of these photos, however, I point out where it's especially bad in one of them.

Please enjoy. These are my opinions on the renderings. I'm not posting for critique of my style, composition, and editing, just looking to share the abilities of this lens.

All images shot wide open in this to show maximum bokeh effect.

1. This little nut was moving around quickly and the AF nails the close eye perfectly.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/1250 | f/1.4 | ISO 320

2. I'm loving the bokeh character of the lens.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/1250 | f/1.4 | ISO 125

3. This was a particularly busy background to render and it did so quite impressively, IMO. This would have been hard for any lens with the grass, mulch, trees, and lighting.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/1250 | f/1.4 | ISO 100

4. Really nice fall off.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/2500 | f/1.4 | ISO 100

5. I notice the green fringe in the treeline, but didn't bother removing it for posting lens quality.
5D Mark IV | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/500 | f/1.4 | ISO 100 | HSS STROBE

6. As the sun came through the trees I wanted to test this lens's flare profile...WOW. Beautiful and something to work into artistic shots.
5D Mark IV | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/500 | f/1.4 | ISO 100 | HSS STROBE

7. Can bokeh get better than this? Really...this is a truly a magnificent rendering.
5D Mark IV | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/320 | f/1.4 | ISO 100 | HSS STROBE

Canon Pro 100 print size??

I recently converted to Win10 Pro ... and prior to it, had Win7 Pro ... during the print setup, there was a setting for 8.5x11 prints. With Win10, that option is not available??? it goes from 5x7 to 8x10 to 10x12, to 14x17 to 13x19 ...

I bought several albums for storing prints at 8.5x11 just because it's a nice size - and it fills the pages. Can anyone tell me if this is a Win10 issue, or some other setting?? It has a "letter size", but soon as I go to photo print, it skips itself to the 8x10 print.

I'd like to stay consistent with these display albums - as I show them to clients occasionally ... and editors. I'm a little tech-dumb when it comes to setting these printers, and can't always find the correct way to get what I like. I still have one LT with Win7, so can print from that, but it's one more step ... thx B

<p>Could the EOS 7D Mark III be the first Canon DSLR to get this feature?</p>

Patent: Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/1.8-3.5

HTML:
A patent showing a faster version of the EF-M 15-45mm has appeared in the form of three separate optical formulas.</p>
<ul>
<li>EF-M 15-45mm f/1.8-3.5</li>
<li>EF-M 15-45mm f/2.0-4.0</li>
<li>EF-M 15-45mm f/2.8-5.0</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.canonnews.com/some-fast-mirrorless-zoom-patents">Canon News</a> Summarizes:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>It also looks like it may be the first canon lens patent application that I’ve seen that specifically mentions that distortion abberation control happens in camera versus being controlled by the lens.</p>

<p>This would tend to make more of a compact camera approach as the powershots do this already, however Canon M’s do not.</p>
<p>As with all patent applications that we show, this is a patent application. This illustrates to us what Canon is looking at in their research labs. It may or may not become a patent, and may or may not even after that be used in a camera system.</p></blockquote>

Patent: EF-S 15-300mm & EF 28-550mm Optical Formulas

HTML:
<p>A patent application covering two optical formulas for both a full frame and APS-C superzoom have surfaced in Japan.</p>

<ul>
<li>Full Frame: 28-550mm f/3.5-6.3</li>
<li>APS-C: 15-300 f/3.5-6.3</li>
</ul>
<p>I think it’s more likely that we see a replacement for the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS than a superzoom like this for a full frame DSLR. Though these formulas could be related to a completely different lens.</p>

Patent: Canon Application for a Hybrid Viewfinder

HTML:
It appears that Canon is continuing R&D into some kind of hybrid viewfinder for DSLRs. Canon News has uncovered a recent <a href="https://www4.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp/cgi-bin/tran_web_cgi_ejje?u=http://www4.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp/eng/translation/2017111821312543610919157627740159FFB33B3B67A055C06D93808FE631D06C">Japanese patent application</a> from Canon for a hybrid viewfinder.</p>
<p><strong>Patent Summary:</strong></p>

<blockquote><p>This one is a clever application where the EVF moves up with the mirror, to show the EVF image through the viewfinder.</p>
<p>This one has some real potential for implementation; as the entire optical path for the viewfinder remains the same for EVF and OVF operation, eliminating what would be a far more complex bulk on top of the camera as the last hybrid viewfinder patent demonstrated.</p></blockquote>

Criteria when buying lens

There are too many lens choices of the same focal length in the market. What are your considerations and which are your most important criteria? Here are some picks for you:

1) Sharpest among all
2) Lowest CA among all
3) Weigh below a certain limit
4) I have a Budget
5) I only buy lens f/2.8 and bigger
6) Vignette to the minimum
7) I follow reviewer’s recommendation
8) I swear by DXO marks
9) I have to see photos taken with the lens to decide
10) I have to feel and play around with it first
11) Only lens by Canon
12) Image Stabilizer is an important factor
13) Fast, accurate and consistent AF
14) Corner sharpness
15) Flare control
16) I care about the material and feel of the lens
17) Others

For me, I always consider the weight first, followed by Budget. I do read reviews for reference (my favourite is photozone.de) and if I cannot make up my mind, I will rent to test out the lens. I am 3, 4, 10 and 11. If the lens has IS and not crazy price, it might become my favourite pick.

What’s yours?
