Optical slave for Vivitar 283 and Canon 580EX?

I am looking for a hotshoe optical slave trigger primarily for a Vivitar 283 UV mod with trigger voltage of ~280V, but would also like the option to use on my Canon 580EX or the MT24/26 with ~6V trigger voltage. Not sure trigger voltage matters with optical slaves.

Wein slaves get very uneven reviews (many do not seem to work out of box), not sure what else is out there. Any recommendations?
I just ordered the Wein Save-sync to connect the Vivitar via PC cable to Canon dSLR, but also want a no-cable option.

Small Eos 5D IV comparison to Nikon, Sony, Fuji...

Found at: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-a7r-iii/sony-a7r-iiiA.HTM#comparison

"The main outlier here is the 5D Mark IV, which due to its optical low pass filter shows considerably less fine detail than the other three cameras in this test. From a pure sharpness point of view, all three of the other cameras outperform the 5D Mark IV"

A7RIII: " ...but right now it looks like it is capable of quite a bit, and possibly earning the place of the most versatile full frame camera on the market. "

Where ist the 5DSR MKII?

Remark: interestingly, this site shares the same pictures like DPReview... They did the comparison on the same event....

More G Series PowerShot Cameras Coming for CES in January [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told at least 3 new PowerShot cameras are scheduled to be announced for CES in January, at least two of which will be a “G” series compact. If we had to take an educated guess, we think the G3 X will see a replacement close to the G1 X Mark III, but without the EVF and the G5 X will be a smaller sensor G1 X Mark III.</p>
<p>We have moved the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/buyers-guide-category/powershot/">PowerShot G3 X to “Don’t Buy” in the Buyers Guide</a>.</p>

<p>We do not think the PowerShot G7 X Mark II will be replaced at CES and will likely come later at CP+. We don’t have the sales numbers, but the PowerShot G7 line seems to be the most popular of the “G” series cameras.</p>
<p>We still do not know if a new superzoom is coming, I get asked about an SX70 HS almost weekly, and sadly I have nothing to report on that front.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Patent: Another Related to Curved Sensors

HTML:
Northlight Images has uncovered another Canon patent relating to curved sensors.</p>
<p><strong>Japanese patent application 2017-084874:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Generating of a gap of the focal position by a curvature of field, etc. are prevented, and the present invention inhibits the voltage change of the imaging signal which occurs because the impedance of each bump differs, and an object of the present invention is to provide a reliable solid state imaging device which can prevent degradation of image quality, and a manufacturing method for the same.</p>

</blockquote>
<p><strong>Northlight Summarizes:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>One of the difficulties is evening out the stresses caused by connecting the curved sensor to a flat substrate, as well as the variation in electrical properties.</p></blockquote>
<p>So while the ideas keep coming, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will end up in a consumer product.</p>

Review: Canon XF405 by cinema5D

HTML:
Johnnie over at cinema5D has completed his review of the brand new XF405, the version he reviewed is considered “pre-production”.</p>
<p><strong>From cinema5D:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The Canon XF405 camera has a compact and portable design. The absence of a C-LOG picture profile, ISO settings (dB marking only), and “creative” aspect ratio markers can indicate that this camera was designed to catch the attention of news crews on a budget or independent documentary filmmakers. This camera doesn’t pretend to be something that it is not, and that’s perfectly fine! With proven autofocus capabilities, ease of use, a good lens and those pleasant Canon skin tones, the XF405/XF400/LEGRIA GX10 might appeal to those who are on the run (&gun) but looking for the extra touch when attempting to harness the aid of a large-sensor aesthetic look into their creative productions. <a href="https://www.cinema5d.com/canon-xf405-review-sample-footage-and-first-impressions/">Read the full review</a></p>

<p>You can <strong><a href="https://bhpho.to/2xxiy3W">preorder the Canon XF405 at B&H Photo</a></strong> and it should begin shipping sometime in November.</p>

<p><strong>Press Release:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Tamron announces the launch of a new ultra-telephoto zoom lens with fast and precise AF, superior image quality and a lightweight, compact design</strong></p>
<p><strong><em>October 26, 2017, Commack, New York</em></strong>— Tamron USA, Inc. , announces the launch of a new ultra-telephoto zoom lens, 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035), for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras. <p><!--more--></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS</strong></p>
<p><strong>1. High-speed Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) control system delivers quick and highly responsive autofocus performance plus outstanding VC image stabilization</strong></p>
<p>The Dual MPU system includes an MPU dedicated to vibration compensation processing, enhancing the computational capacity of the entire system. An MPU with built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) provides high-speed digital signal processing and achieves outstanding autofocus performance and vibration compensation, both indispensable for ultra-telephoto photography.</p>
<p><strong>2. Superb image quality in an ultra-telephoto zoom lens</strong></p>
<p>The Model A035 includes three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements for optimal optical design and aberration correction. Lighter weight, increased light transmission and crisp images with excellent contrast are achieved by reducing the number of lens elements while ensuring an appropriate balance with aberration correction. The A035 has minimum object distance (MOD) of 1.5 m (59 in) and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.6 for close-up work.</p>
<p><strong>3. Exclusive eBAND Coating reduces flare and ghosting</strong></p>
<p>The new A035 features Tamron’s eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating, which has an extremely low refractive index and fine multiple-layer coating technology, to achieve outstanding antireflection performance. BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating, with excellent antireflection characteristics, increases light transmission. These coating technologies greatly reduce the ghosting and flare that can occur when subjects are backlit.</p>
<p><strong>4. Lightest weight, 1,115 g (39.3 oz) lens in the ultra-telephoto zoom lens class*, and only 196.5 mm </strong><strong>(7.7 in) long</strong></p>
<p>Magnesium alloy is used in key areas of the lens barrel to improve weight reduction, strength and portability. Total length of 196.5 mm (Nikon mount) means a compact size for an ultra-telephoto zoom lens covering up to 400 mm, and the A035 can therefore be easily carried in a standard camera bag. Combined with excellent vibration compensation functions, the compact size enables successful handheld ultra-telephoto photography.</p>
<p><span class="green">*Length is the distance from the front tip of the lens to the lens mount face.</span></p>
<p><strong>5. Optional accessory tripod mount is Arca-Swiss compatible</strong></p>
<p>An Arca-Swiss style tripod mount is available as an optional accessory. Designed exclusively for Model A035, it provides quick and secure attachment to a tripod and greater stability. An easy-to-hold grip shape includes an expanded mounting plane, and the use of magnesium helps achieve lighter weight, thereby further facilitating handheld photography.</p>
<p><strong>6. Compatible with tele converters and TAP-in Console</strong></p>
<p>Model A035 is compatible with tele converters designed exclusively for Tamron lenses to achieve 1.4X and 2X the original focal length*. It’s also compatible with Tamron’s TAP-in Console (Model TAP-01), an optional accessory enabling users to update lens firmware and customize the lens settings, including adjustments of focusing positions for autofocusing and the operation modes for the lens’s Vibration Compensation system.</p>
<p><span class="green">*Use of the 1.4× tele converter results in light reduction of 1 F stop; use of the 2× tele converter results in the loss of 2 F stops</span></p>
<p><strong>7. Moisture-Resistant construction and fluorine coating for enhanced weather protection</strong></p>
<p>The surface of the front element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The front surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance. Also, with active use of the A035 for outdoor photography likely, sealant is used in each of the movable and joining areas of the lens barrel to resist the intrusion of moisture.</p>
<p><strong>8. Electromagnetic diaphragm system now used also for Nikon-mount lenses</strong></p>
<p>An electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in Nikon-mount lenses*. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible because the diaphragm blades are driven and controlled by a built-in motor through electronic pulse signals.</p>

<p><span class="green">* Available only with cameras compatible with the electromagnetic diaphragm (D5, D4s, D4, D3X, Df, D850,D810, D810A, D800, D800E, D750, D600, D610, D300S, D500, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100). (As of October, 2017; Tamron)</span></p>
<p><strong>9. External design places importance on functionality and ease of use</strong></p>
<p>While inheriting the design that makes use of many organic curves and the delicately polished form down to fine details that characterize the SP lens series, the new Model A035 comes with a highly sophisticated design that also places a lot of importance on the lens’s functionality and ease of use, featuring an overall form that faithfully encompasses the internal structures within, a slim Luminous Gold brand ring and the switch shape design.</p>

Sigma 85 not compatible with 5D4

I have the previous (non Art) version of the Sigma 85 f1.4. It worked fine with my 5D2 and 5D3. I just tried out my new 5D4 and discovered a horrific artifact when the lens is used at 1.4 or 1.6 or 1.8. It creates these huge dark circles, like the Target store logo (in gray instead of red). At f2 and smaller it goes away.

Since it is a non-Canon lens (and does not have the USB connection of the newer lenses) I assume there is no fix? Has anyone experienced it with this or other Sigma lenses? If there is a fix I would love to know. However I have learned my lesson about third party lenses and will only use Canon lenses from now on. (My other three lenses are Canon L).

Canon Inc. Releases Q3 Results for 2017

HTML:
<em> Operating Results and Financial Conditions</em></p>
<p><strong>2017 Third Quarter in Review

</strong>Looking back at the global economy in the third quarter of 2017, the U.S. economy continued to grow steadily as employment conditions continued to improve and consumer spending was stable. In Europe, unemployment rate decreased and capital investment showed signs of recovery mainly in such developed countries as Germany. The Chinese economy rallied due to public investments and the economies of emerging countries continued to realize moderate growth due to strong exports. In Japan, corporate earnings improved and consumer spending showed signs of recovery. As a result, the global economy overall continued to realize moderate growth……..</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Results by Segment:

</strong>Within the Imaging System Business Unit, although sales volume of interchangeable-lens digital cameras declined compared with the previous year, owing to the shrinking market, unit sales of such newly launched models as EOS 6D Mark II enjoyed solid demand, allowing Canon to maintain the top share in the U.S., Japan, and major countries in Europe. As for digital compact cameras, sales of high-value-added models enjoyed solid demand; supported by healthy demand for the newly launched G9 X Mark II, part of the high-image-quality PowerShot G-series lineup, leading to an increase in unit sales from the same period of the previous year…….</p>

<p><strong>Outlook

</strong>As for the outlook in the fourth quarter, the U.S. economy is expected to continue to recover as employment conditions and corporate earnings steadily improve. The European economy is expected to recover slowly due to increasing uncertainty surrounding the U.K.’s decision to leave the EU. Looking at China, the economy is expected to stabilize through changes in fiscal policy, while emerging economies, such as those of Southeast Asia, Russia and Brazil, are expected to recover along with the rising price of natural resources. With regard to the Japanese economy, the outlook indicates a trend of gradual recovery supported by improved employment conditions. Overall, the pace of recovery of the global economy is expected to grow stronger, despite such concerns as increasing geopolitical risks….</p>

Off Brand: Sony Announces FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS & Development of 400mm F2.8 G Master lens

HTML:
<em>New E-mount FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS Standard Zoom Delivers Serious Still and Video Performance with Compact Design</em></p>
<p><strong>NEW YORK, Oct. 25, 2017 –</strong> Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today introduced the latest addition to their expanding full-frame E-mount lens lineup, the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS Standard Zoom (model SEL24105G).</p>
<p>The new full-frame lens covers the commonly used 24 to 105mm focal length range, delivering outstanding G Lens™ imaging performance with the most lightweight design in its class1, maximizing its versatility and usability. Therefore, the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS can be used for versatile shooting such as landscape, portrait, wedding and so on. This lens also features fast, precise and quiet autofocus capabilities in both still and video shooting, making it an ideal complement for Sony’s extensive lineup of E-mount cameras.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>High Optical Performance and Outstanding Resolution</strong>

Sony’s new FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS lens delivers excellent corner-to-corner sharpness throughout the entirety of its zoom range, while also producing beautifully rendered ‘bokeh’ or background defocus at all focal lengths.</p>
<p>This high image quality is made possible thanks to its advanced optical design featuring four aspherical lens elements, two of which are high precision AA (advanced aspherical) lenses. There are also three strategically located ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that work in combination with the aforementioned aspherical lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration and ensure the ultimate resolution is captured.</p>
<p>The lens also has Sony’s original Nano AR coating to minimize flare and ghosting, and utilizes a circular aperture to ensure it delivers high quality bokeh that is consistent for all Sony’s G series.</p>
<p><strong>Compact, Lightweight Design and Shooting Flexibility</strong>

The new FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS lens weighs in at approximately 663 grams (23.4 oz), making it the lightest lens in its class1. When combined with one of Sony’s compact E-mount bodies, it gives photographers and videographers a far more mobile, manageable camera system that greatly increases their shooting flexibility.</p>

<p>In addition to the compact design and versatile 24-105mm focal length, the new lens has a minimum focus distance of 1.25ft, allowing for impressive close up detail. It also includes built-in optical image stabilization to make it easier to produce sharp, blur-free images when shooting handheld.</p>
<p><strong>Highly Advanced and Accurate AutoFocus</strong>

In order to keep up with fast-moving subjects, the new standard zoom lens features a DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) system that is capable of rapid positioning of the lens’ focus groups with high accuracy and very minimal noise. This advanced system combined with a constant F4 aperture at all focal lengths makes the SEL24105G an excellent choice for both still and video shooting.</p>
<p>Further adding to its versatility, the new standard zoom lens also features a customizable focus hold button, a dust and moisture resistant design2 and a fluorine coating on the front element to help minimize dust, water, oil and other contaminants.</p>
<p><strong>Pricing and Availability</strong>

The new FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS Standard Zoom Lens will ship this November for about $1,300 US and $1,700 CA.</p>

Been with Canon for 12 years - wait or jump ship?

I realize threads like this can devolve quickly but looking for advice from other Canon users.

Background: Been shooting a dSLR since Canon 350D that I bought 12 years ago. Moved to the 50D (had tried out Nikon at that point but muscle memory was all backwards). Now on 5DmkIII that I bought when it came out. Lenses: 17-40/4, 24-105/4, 70-200/4, 35/2 IS (edit: corrected), 100/2
Shoot landscapes/seascapes and sell prints. Self published book of images in its second printing. Haven't spent a dime since the MkIII so have enough saved to pay for new camera/lenses.
Also shoot 10 and 12 year old kids playing sports - indoor basketball, dance as well as lacrosse, soccer

With the Sony a7Riii specs now official, I have to admit to being very intrigued - especially with their 24-105 which is my workhorse lens.

Things I wish I had with my Canon are a bigger sensor with more DR (I print 20x30+ not infrequently and have to enlarge in software before sending to the lab). I briefly considered the 5DS R but FPS was way too low for kids sports. My 5D mk III is barely able to catch decisive moments in faster sports.

Other benefits (on paper) of the Sony - eye focus (awesome if it works reliably), better AF than the mkIII, lighter weight (1 lb less with the 24-105 respectively).

I love my Canon 35/2 IS (edit: corrected) and have favored a lighter kit as you can see above and am happy with the lenses overall.

The Sony 12-24 lens and the 100-400 get impressive reviews and, with the new 24-105, would greatly increase my range.

I frankly don't see much development along these lines in the Canon and, as noted above, have been with them for over a decade. I would not pre-order a Sony and will absolutely wait for real world reviews

Really appreciate your thoughts on this. Hope this is an appropriate thread to start.

Canon posts significant increase in sales and profit for Q3 2017

Canon today posted their 3rd quarter results, and the numbers are pretty good. It is Canon's 3rd consecutive quarter of YoY sales and profit growth starting from Q1, first time in 7 years.

700700p467EDNmain2017-3rd-a.png

Canon showed sales growth overall gaining 27% from 3rd quarter 2016, and Op Profit gaining 101% since the 3rd quarter 2016.

On the imaging front, both sales and operating profit gained from YoY 3rd quarter 2016, however, the total number of units sold dropped by 5%. Which is most likely low considering that last year, for the 3rd quarter they had limited competition because of the Sony Kumamoto earthquake that affected sensors over the vast majority of the industry.

For interchangeable-lens cameras, the rate of market contraction, primarily in developed countries, continue to slow down. Against this backdrop, our sales, which were relatively high in the same period last year due to the earthquake, were down 5% to 1.31 million units, which was better than we expected.
In our lineup, we increased sales of the EOS 6D Mark II, a new competitively priced model within our range of interchangeable-lens cameras featuring full-frame sensors. This camera has been highly rated not only for significant improvement in such basic features as AF, but also for being able to offer this in a camera that is both compact and lightweight. As for the compact camera market, which continues to recover from the earthquake, we posted strong sales of such premium models as the G9X Mark II, which offers excellent portability. Additionally, as our sales were at a low level due to the earthquake in the same quarter last year, our unit sales in the third quarter of this year showed an increase of 13% to 850 thousand.

2017-3rd-b.png

For the more longer term outlook, Canon expects more of the same, a slight increase in unit sales from the prior projection and still slightly under what they sold last year, as a result of the Kumamoto earthquake.

For the full-year, we raised our projection for interchangeable-lens cameras by 200 thousand units, as we posted better than expected results in the third quarter. We now expect sales to be down 3% to 5.5 million units.
One of the reasons for the revision was due to an increase in demand for high-quality images, particularly from smartphone users who use social media. Interchangeable-lens cameras, which are user-friendly and offer enhanced network capabilities that meet this demand, are leading to the acquisition of new users. As a result, our entry-class models have performed beyond our expectations. On top of this, sales of our new models that mainly target advanced-amateurs were also better than expected.
We also reflected this situation into our market projection, which is now projected it to be down 1% to 11.4 million units.

2017-3rd-c.png

Interestingly according to Canon, they expect to see the ILC market overall essentially stabilize at around 11.4 million units with Canon having a 48% market share in total ILC units.

6D2 WiFi and bluetooth interfacing to a tablet

I have a 6D2 and an iPad. I wanted to use the iPad to remotely control the camera and to be able to pull pictures off of the camera.... These are my observations.

My first step was to download the Canon Connect app to my iPad.... easy!

Turn Bluetooth on in both devices and give a name to the camera.... easy!

Connect the camera to the iPad through Bluetooth... easy!

At this point, you are connected, and when you try to do anything with the Canon Control app, you get a message that you are not connected through WiFi..... In other words, what is the use of connecting to the camera through Bluetooth, if you can not do anything? Why can you not use the Canon Control app over Bluetooth? ? ? Have I screwed up or missed some setting?

So I enable WiFi on the camera and connect. A fairly easy process.... and note that the camera is providing a SSID and the iPad connects to the camera. This means that it will work "way out in the middle of nowhere" where you do not have other WiFi to connect through. Canon got that one right.....

With WiFi enabled, you can control the camera, but not fully. It works, there is a minimum of shutter lag, you can touch the screen for focus. It is good, but could have been better. I expect that as time goes on, Canon's WiFi interface will improve.... and this could mean firmware updates in the future.

Another thing I was disappointed with in the Bluetooth is the lack of ability to connect to a Bluetooth speaker (headphones) or a Bluetooth microphone..... The lack of a headphone jack on the 6D2 sucks, but it would be so easy to connect to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones, and they are everywhere. (I have a pair on my head as I type this)

I will attempt to test out the range for WiFi tethering tonight..... anyone have some practical experience/observations?

Sigma Set to Announce 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens

HTML:
<p>A few weeks ago<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/sigma-to-announce-new-lens-ahead-of-the-pdn-photoplus-expo-beginning-on-october-26-2017/"> Sigma announced that they would be announcing a new lens</a>, and it looks like the 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary is going to be it.</p>
<p>We assumed it would be a new 70-200 f/2.8 DG OS sport, but for the moment, that appears to be coming at a later date.</p>
<p>I suspect we’ll see an announcement for the 16mm f/1.4 DC some time this week.</p>

I got defeated :(

I am a 5d3 and 6d user. The bodies were due for an upgrade but I wasn't sold on 5d4/6d2. After taking a hard look at d850 and a7rii I finally ended up buying a 5d4 today :( Just couldn't make myself sell my huge lens collection and buy new ones :'(

I feel like I am defeated. But I am absolutely at the edge of my tolerence limit. if Canon doesn't step up the game, this is positively going to be my last Canon body. I bought 5d4 but I am not a happy camper.

Sorry I had to rant a little as I am too sad tonight lol. Now back to exploring my new toy

1DX Mark II shutter shading

So I probably already know the answer to this, but wanted to get some opinions on the shutter of my 1DX Mark II.

Both images taken at ISO 100, 1/8000 sec, with no lens, aimed an empty sky at 14 FPS.
61govNJ.jpg

udl6bgm.jpg

Shutter count for the camera is about 169,000 clicks in the year I've had it, which makes me somewhat disappointed that this came up so quickly.

An interesting note to this, the shading on the bottom of the first frame only ever occurs at the first photo in a burst and the rest all look like the second frame consistently until a new burst starts. It's only even noticeable above 1/4000 sec, and below that is really a non-issue.

I realized this has been happening since at least June of this year if not before, but I didn't think much of it until today I was shooting some wide-aperture portraits in broad daylight and it really stood out to me.

Is this a sign of shutter failure approaching, or just a laggy shutter? I just had to send my 5D Mark III in to Canon after the focus joystick broke, so I'm not really in the mood to send another camera in, and I don't really use 1/8000th of a second enough to be too bothered by it right now, but if it's likely to put my 1DX out of service randomly, I'd rather have it out of service on my own time than in the middle of a job.

Camera to complement your phone

Are you looking to buy a camera to complement your smartphone but dont know what to get? Then read on!

If size & weight are important and you have no plans to buy a 2nd lens then a point & shoot with a large image sensor like those found in a Four Thirds, APS-C, Full frame camera may be of interest to you.

Large image sensor allows for better image quality than any and all smartphones.

Their built-in lens tends to have faster f-number than the kit lens of mirrorless or dSLRs.

They also have WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC to complement and connect to your smartphone.

Listed below are some of these cameras that are smaller & weigh less than their mirrorless counterpart. These are accurate as of the date of this posting.

Full Frame
- Leica Q (Type 116) < looks like a Leica M camera but with auto focus and auto aperture
- Sony RX1R II
- Sony RX1R
- Sony RX1

APS-C
- Fujifilm X100F
- Ricoh GR II
- Canon G1 Mark III
- Fujifilm X70
- Leica X-U (Typ 113)

Four Thirds
- Leica D-LUX (Typ 109)
- Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100

Another option that offers higher utility may be buying a flagship phone like a Google Pixel 2 or iPhone 8.

You may leave your new camera at home but never your phone.

The best camera you can ever own is the one with you always.
