EF24-70 F2.8L MKII soft edges?

I've had my EF24-70 F2.8L MKII lens for about 2 1/2 years now and I've never been convinced it's a stunning as reviews suggest it is. It's permanently fitted to my EOS 6D and having been into photography for 25years + I like to think I know the technique side of thing at least (but happy to stand corrected)

I've had some very sharp images from it but now and again I'll get some such as the example below that just look soft at the edges. Performance seems to be inconsistent but I can't nail it down to any particular settings ie certain focal lengths, F stop etc.

I'll admit that at fullscreen on my 24" monitor photos such as the example below look fine; it's only at say over 50% and particularly at 100% that the softness really shows. I'd just like to gauge if there is something wrong with the lens, my technique or if I'm just expecting too much? I've had some shots taken with the humble EOS100D (SL1) + 18-135 lens that have seemed sharper although admittedly although I've not done any scientific tests on identical scenes and the sensor has a smaller pixel count so at 100% appears smaller on screen that shots from the 6D.

I should add that I've sent sample shots to both my (well respected) camera dealer & to Canon who both felt it was OK and last year the lens was checked by Canon for sharpness/alignment when it went in to have filter thread replaced after a knock. It was passed as OK and indeed I've had some lovely sharp images from it since.

So on to the sample images & selected crops. It was taken in woods around midday on a cloudy day at focal length of 55mm @ F16, shutter speed of 2 secs, ISO 100. Lee landscape polariser fitter & camera was tripod mounted with cable release used. There was a light breeze hence movement in the foliage but no where near enough to move the trees. I focused on the left of the two nearest trees which was about 3m + way. Possible a little near than needed (hyperfocal distance should be 6.36m) but at F16, the area of softness (shaded red) was nowhere near infinity and appears softer than other areas even further away?

Picture was shot in RAW & converted to JPG to post here but no other processing carried out.

Original image is the untouched image straight from the camera but had to convert to jpg & reduce quality to 8 (High) in Photoshop to reduce filesize in order to post here. If anyone wants to see the original RAW file I can post it on Flickr/Dropbox etc for download.

Photo 1 full image shows the whole photo with sections shown in crops highlighted to show positioning.

Red section 100% shows a 100% crop that I feel is too soft.

Blue section 100% shows a 100% crop of an area at around the same distance that appears sharp(er) to me.

At the end of the day I have little choice in what to do - either sell it or keep it; it's no longer under warranty and Canon say it's fine. I'm tempted to go for the new 24-105 F4l MKII to see what the difference if any is although I know in theory at least that my lens should be superior.

I suppose it does what I want it to do for most of the time, just that for the cost I expected outstanding results at all times. So thoughts greatly appreciated please - does it seem ok/within parameters (as Canon would say) or am I just expecting too much? Or is it my technique?

Mirrorless on the Move?

Note I made no comment on how fast mirrorless was moving or whether that was good or bad! Likely the debate of dSLR vs. Mirrorless will continue for quite a while. Yet, I found some interesting 'facts' in the CIPA data for the 1st quarter of 2017. DSLR shipments declined globally (-8.3%) for 1Q17 (vs. 1Q16) while mirrorless shipments increased significantly but from a lower base (+45%). This was consistent across essentially all major markets - Japan, Asia, Europe, & Americas. The most dramatic major market increase was in the Americas where mirrorless shipments were up 78% year-on-year. ('Other' was up 88% but that is a very small slice of the overall picture.)

In Japan mirrorless now is getting close to 1:1 with dSLR - roughly 45% of all shipments are mirrorless. In the Americas the ratio is closer to 1:3.3. DSLR's clearly still dominate in the Americas, however, that ratio used to be 1:6 not long ago so the increased penetration of mirrorless even in the US seems evident. Globally now 36% of shipments are mirrorless

Phase One Announces the World’s First 100MP Achromatic Digital Back

HTML:
<em>Phenomenal Clarity in Black and White Photography</em></p>
<p><strong>COPENHAGEN, May 10, 2017</strong> – Phase One today announced the world’s first 101-megapixel achromatic digital back — the IQ3 100MP Achromatic, featuring a new CMOS sensor design and state-of-the-art focus on classic black and white photography. With a top ISO of 51,200, it stands out as the most light sensitive medium format digital back available today, and its unmatched resolution offers photographers a new way to explore and express their visions without compromise.</p>
<p><em>“A black and white picture has the ability to transport the viewer into a different time and place. It essentially creates the illusion of a timeless experience …a simple black and white portrait can sum up all aspects of photography for me.” –Mark Seliger, Portrait Photographer</em></p>
<p>The IQ3 100MP Achromatic’s 101-megapixel sensor is produced without a Bayer color filter, allowing all available light to be captured unaltered and unobstructed. With no color information to be interpreted, the sensor is free to focus solely on capturing the highest level of detail, nuance and luminance.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“The IQ3 100MP Achromatic enables photographers to capture a timeless expression,” said Stefan Sandor, Vice President Marketing and Product Management. “The detail, tonality and image quality must be experienced first-hand, as seeing is not only believing, but truly inspirational.”</p>
<p>Produced without an Infrared (IR) cut-off filter, the IQ3 100MP Achromatic can capture light outside the visible spectrum, benefitting artistic and infrared applications. These powerful imaging abilities open new opportunities for a multitude of photographic disciplines, from fine art, landscape, portrait, and architecture to scientific applications.</p>
<p>The new achromatic CMOS sensor provides instant Live View feedback, and the sensor’s ability to see IR light allows the Live View to display light that is normally invisible to the naked eye. Capturing in purely black and white means that even at high ISO, the details produced have an analog-like smoothness, similar to film grains on a black and white film. The absence of color makes it possible to stretch the images to the extreme and at the same time retain the pure black and white image quality demanded by the world’s best photographers.</p>
<p>The IQ3 100MP Achromatic Digital Back also provides an Electronic Shutter, long exposure of up to 60 minutes, HDMI output, WiFi capabilities, full IQ3 XF Camera System integration, and compatibility with other camera bodies, as is standard with all IQ3 Digital Backs.</p>

Tamron Will Announce a New 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens This Year

HTML:
<p><a href="https://photorumors.com/2017/05/09/tamron-to-announce-a-new-24-70mm-f2-8-di-vc-usd-g2-lens-later-this-year/">According to reports</a>, Tamron will introduce a new 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 later this year. The new version will be a replacement for the current 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC which was announced back in 2012.</p>
<p>As pointed out by Photo Rumors, this is a logical next step as Tamron updated the 70-200 f/2.8 VC to a new version early in 2017.</p>
<p>Sigma recently <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/sigma-announces-the-24-70mm-f2-8-dg-os-hsm/">announced a 24-70mm f/2.8 OS Art series lens</a> that we still can’t order, so Tamron likely has to follow suit.</p>
<p>Some folks are still clamouring for Canon to release a new 24-70 f/2.8L with IS.</p>

The Next Camera Body From Canon Will Be.... [CR3]

HTML:
<p>We’re told from one of our retail sources that the next camera body from Canon is going to be the Cinema EOS C200.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-6d-mark-ii-announcement-coming-in-july-cr2/">We posted recently that the Canon EOS 6D Mark II</a> would be coming some time in July, so this camera will likely be coming in the June/July timeframe.</p>
<p>Why wasn’t the Cinema EOS C200 announced for NAB? We’re not sure. We do wonder if availability of the camera will still be a few months down the road.</p>
<p>We do know that the EOS C200 will be 4K and we’re told that it’s “pretty loaded”, though the source wouldn’t elaborate on the full list of specifications.</p>
<p>We also don’t know if this is a replacement to the Cinema EOS C100 Mark II, or an addition to the Cinema EOS camera body lineup.</p>
<p><em>More to come….</em></p>

Eos 5D Mk IV--End of ETTR?

I'm finding even +1/3 is blowing more highlights than I like.

Sort of found some confirmation on Art Morris's site where he finds images are exposed correctly even though he isn't pushing the histogram up to the right side as on previous models. I'm also still getting used to this.

(He also claims that the 5D IV has better IQ than the 1DX II!!!):

"As compared to the EOS-1D X Mark II, Canon’s blazingly fast flagship body, the 5D IV offers lighter weight and lower cost. Not to mention far superior image quality...

The high ISO performance of the 5D IV at least rivals that of the vaunted high ISO king, the EOS-1D X Mark II. Control of fixed pattern noise with the 5D Mark IV is outstanding."

http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2016/10/12/why-i-love-my-5d-mark-iv-the-beyond-incredible-imaging-sensor-and-so-much-more/

Otherwise, not finding much info about metering, exposure tips for the 5D IV. Thoughts and/or links would be appreciated!

Firmware: Canon EOS M5 v1.0.1

HTML:
Canon has released new firmware for the recently released Canon EOS M5 mirrorless camera.</p>
<p>Firmware Version 1.0.1 incorporates the following fixes:</p>
<ol>
<li>Corrects a phenomenon in which, when the playback grid is set to “6×4”, and a vertical image is displayed, or a horizontal image is rotated to be displayed vertically, the grid does not display correctly.</li>
<li>In languages other than Japanese, the phrase “no. of shots” has been corrected to “value” in the “Time-lapse movie settings > Interval/Shots” setting screen.</li>
</ol>
<p>Firmware Version 1.0.1 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.0.

If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.</p>

Estranged (Father-Son Short Film)

Hey guys,
Been quite a while! Have been working on a bigger project since my last post - but I'm happy to say it's finally completed, I'm really proud of it and would love to hear what you guys think of it.

Really wanted to focus on how, for an unknown reason, we as a child slowly drift apart from our family as we grow up - but regardless, an unspoken love still exists.

Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCNZ6WuVoqM

Let me know what you think!

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Announcement Coming in July [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the Canon EOS 6D Mark II will be announced in July of this year, though the exact date is unknown at the time of writing this. The EOS 6D Mark II will also start shipping relatively soon after the announcement, so it’s safe to say you should have your hands on the new camera some time in August, 2017.</p>
<p>Specifications have been extremely hard to come by, and anything out there currently is either made up or just logical features we can expect in the coming body.</p>
<p>We posted a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/where-is-the-canon-eos-6d-mark-ii/">predicted specifications list back in February</a>, but it’s nothing more than conjecture at this point.</p>
<p>We do expect legitimate specifications to leak out in the coming month or so.</p>
<p>We put a [CR2] on this because announcement dates can move, though it’s more common with lenses than with camera bodies.</p>

The End of the DSLR?

I had an interesting discussion last night with a guy who has more contacts than I do in the Canon world. He made a bold statement.

"Canon will never release another mirror-based professional DSLR"

Pushing further he said that you won't see a 1DXIII or a 5D Mark V with mirrors. There will probably be refreshes in the amateur lineup (90D etc) but even those won't go more than a couple of generations more.

6D Mark II? He doesn't know, but wouldn't be surprised if it was ready but Canon were unsure whether to actually launch it or not.

He expects the current 1DX II and 5D IV to be on sale for "At least" another 5 years, and possibly like the film cameras they'll keep them in slow production for a few years more for those who really don't want to move to mirrorless.

Changes in current lens designs, focus technology and changes in market plans for future lenses are all being based on a mirrorless future, apparently.

He also said this would make a lot of people unhappy, which is why no-one is talking about it.

So perhaps I shouldn't either. But oh well too late :)

I suspect he may be wrong. I am a definite convert for mirrorless, but there is still a huge difference when it comes to shooting fast action. And battery life! Will these problems be solved within 5 years? Probably.

Warning about EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM AF Problem.

Dear friends,

For all of you using or thinking of purchasing the new EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens, i just found this Service Notice of Canon Philipinnes, warning about an AF problem that affects lenses of specific serial number batches (i guess up-to-date):

http://www.canon.com.ph/news-pressroom#May05A

So, take great care in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Wishing you and your beloved, all the best from starry, warm, summery Athens Greece.

Yours
Yiannis.

International power question

Headed to Europe from the US before too long. I may just bring two fully charged batteries for my 5D3 and call it good. But someone please remind me -- if I wanted to use my (US plug version) Canon battery charger, do I use...

  • A simple plug adaptor (because the charger itself is a form of transformer)

  • A simple plug adaptor + a transformer

Int'l travel is usually just a laptop / iDevice sort of charging proposition for me, and those have in-line transformers, so I've rarely had this come up. Just wanted to make sure I avoid calamity appropriately if I did bring the charger.

Thx,
A
